I do not universally recommend this game, but I couldn't live with myself if I didn't reservedly recommend this game.

Outward is unlike any game I have ever played. Idk if it's a culture thing, I've never been to Quebec, but the vibe of this game is absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ unique. The soundtrack is weird as hell. The enemies are weird as hell. The progression system is weird as hell. The environments are... well, weird, anyway.

There's a lot of stuff in this game that my friend and I were forced to just chalk up to "welp, guess it's another pointless setpiece," stuff like big statues, glowing shrines, alchemical apparati. Most things aren't interactable and that's fine, but it was weird how often we walked past a model they designed and skinned which just didn't appear to have any point whatsoever, but was nevertheless sitting in a prominent or hidden place. I guess it's possible that a lot of them were for quests we never did, who knows. Very big feeling of "I guess in real life we wouldn't expect to find the lore for every random tree stump, rusty pipes, graffiti piece, and building for rent, why should this be different? Sure looks cool, though."

A lot of this game is like that. You're just kinda... on an adventure. Exploring the world and its rules. Journeying for the sake of the journey.

The progression is brutal but rewarding. Money is everything and it's not easy to get. Everything feels a little overpriced, sometimes discouraging experimentation with alchemy and cooking and the like, and the recipes are overpriced too, but when you find a new tent or backpack you get legitimately excited.

Others have said there's a lot of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ walking in this game, and, well, yeah. A lot of grinding in general. When my friend and I played we would play for as many hours as we could before we got frustrated and/or bored, then stop for a few weeks until the itch became impossible to ignore again. I can't imagine playing this game solo being much fun, though I also don't really play souls-likes. Either way, the co-op adds a lot.

Overall, I'd say read the other reviews to get a feel for what this game actually is, and if it seems interesting to you, play it. It goes on sale a lot. Maybe you'll hate it but this game is just too unique not to experience. The people who made it obviously legitimately cared about the project, to the point where on their store page they have a song they literally wrote and performed to professional quality about playing the game from the PC's perspective.

Weird ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game. Tries things I've never seen anyone else try. Worth a look.
