Management games have never taken my fancy. But, Funselektor and Strelka have delivered to make something that's absolutely hooked me since day one.

The visuals and artstyle are excellently done, and as a player, the excellently-written dialogue humanizes your chosen crew - whether it's a driver panicking over a punctured tire, or your crew chief informing you about an accident in qualifying.

Now, a disclaimer. I have been with this game for a little while, and gave feedback before launch (as well as the occasional bug). This means I've received the game for free - in order to test it. It also means as a reviewer I have more context than a regular player about just how good this game has gotten. And it's become amazing.

I would have gladly taken the original game, but there's so much more depth, so many more features, so much more art in this labor of love that I would absolutely recommend this game. The artstyle somewhat belies the absolute depth to Golden Lap, from risk assessment of component reliability when tuning, to weighing a sponsor challenge against an all-out win, to wringing every millimeter of tread in the tires and every drop of fuel in the tank - almost hoping your competitors wreck out so a yellow flag forces competitors to slow down now, leaving more fuel to burn later.

Just don't pick Night on your first career, or you'll be spending the next three seasons battling it out for 18th place.

I recommend this game on *one* condition - you get it for $7 or less, during one of the ridiculous price drops, and you're prepared to mod this hot garbage Frostbite engine game with graphics mods to make it playable on anything less than a NASA Supercomputer. The jagged edges from poorly-optimized antialiasing are so sharp, they look like I might cut my fingers on them - and that's after I set AA to 24x in nVidia Control Panel.

The campaign is at most 20 hours long. It's only more if you're retrying races because of rubber-banding on hard difficulty, and that's not really more content, that's slowing your progression.

The only reason I'm recommending it is because I got to watch a man use a 1967 Chevy Camaro as a cruise missile. The only reason you should buy this game is to pay $6.99 to laugh at it.

This game is the strongest argument for playing Forza Horizon I've ever seen.

This game is great and the recent update adding helicopter parts shows both that the game devs are still around to work on the project, and their talent in making new ideas work. The reason I bought this game originally is because of the Android version that I had played for quite a while. I was looking to build bigger planes and at a higher speed, since I have a considerably more powerful laptop and it has a 15" screen, compared to my notably smaller Razer Phone.

However, what I dislike is the serious issue with the designer, which is probably putting off me as well as a bunch of other players from building creations. What I liked a lot more about the Android version was that everything was literally at your fingertips if you were using a phone. The system allowed for zooming into the space inside planes or cars in case you wanted to build some more inside of them, by moving the "camera" side to side and zooming in, and then moving parts around in a pseudo-noclip kind of way.

*Edit: Developer Mikeska pointed out that holding Ctrl gives the same effect, allowing camera movement unhindered by accidentally moving parts around. I would prefer this "view not touch" mode to be default with Ctrl being used to select a part while moving rather than the other way around (which it is currently). This solves most of my issues with the designer!

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem the case for the PC version. The game doesn't use a noclip system to use WASD to move the camera around like other designers which has really bothered me, because it makes it much easier to build in noclip. WASD has been replaced with a part rotation system, and in the designer you'd need to use the mouse and only the mouse to move around. You'll also need a mouse wheel to zoom in and out.

However, this doesn't detract from the game if you're downloading planes from their website and just playing. The community makes quality planes (and mods, since they have an API!) and it's pretty enjoyable. (Note: with map mods, trees are all pink due to a change in the API that updated textures and caused trees to break. 1.8 maps will not have this issue, only older maps.)

-------------------------
This game runs very well on my laptop, and looks great since I can set all graphics to high, and shaders to realtime.
Alienware m15
4K 3840 x 2160 100%sRGB screen
nVidia 2070 Max-Q

16GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM

*I was not paid to write this review. I enjoy the game quite a bit, considering my hours on record playing this game on Steam and countless more in the Android version.
