Never played the originals since I have never been into fighting games, but since this one got so much praise and its Dragon Ball then I had to cop. (Dragon Ball introduced me to Japanese culture, anime, manga and all that good stuff)

Pros:
Runs very good and does not need a supercomputer to run and still has good visuals.
So many characters to choose from and it does not matter that much who you play
So much for any type of player. You want to play story you got it for multiple different characters (they have their own story modes). You want online you got quick matches, ranked or fighting rooms where everyone takes turns to fight.
Original voice actors and music from the anime and older games
Seamless netcode and online is smooth
Very good training modes
Community made challenges

Cons:
Story mode is slideshows most of the time
The menus are a hassle (you can customize characters only on one place)
Super training mode does not let you change characters (or atleast I dont know how)
If you buy game upgrades you wont get the shenron packs or some other bonuses inlcluded if you bought the more expensive version from the get go.

Overall I recommend 100%.
First fighting game except smb melee that got me actually hooked and didnt make me want to quit or refund after an hour.
