Surprisingly fun timekiller tug-of-war game. If you're unfamiliar, it's a style of game where you control the spawning and upgrading of units, but don't control them directly - they simply proceed from left to right and shoot everything in the way. Your goal is to spawn them in ways that maximize their effectiveness (sending groups at once instead of one at a time to be picked off, for example). Some forces do allow you more fine control, such as launching missiles to destroy clusters of enemies, or a base defense turret you directly aim and fire with your mouse.

I'm not sure how I'd rate it at normal price (the depth only goes so far) but at its current sale price of $5 I think it's a good timekiller kind of game.

Also the music is surprisingly good too. Not stellar in ways that make you listen to it outside of playing the game, but it's a rockin' little list of tracks to bob your head to while watching soldiers fight for your cause.

I don't think I can say much more than what's already been said. Suffice to say... the story is captivating, the beat-em-up gameplay loads of fun, the heat moves ludicriously fun and brutal, the sidequests wonderfully wacky, the side activities plentiful, and you won't be left wanting for something to do. My first run was easily 50+ hours just seeing what there was to see around the city. If you mainline the story you can beat it much much faster, but that's not the recommended way to play.

Some parts of it may be convoluted enough to warrant a visit to a guide, but if you want to feel like a proper badass beating up everyone that's dumb enough to stand in your way, you can't go wrong here. Just don't forget to visit the disco or the karaoke bar later to take the edge off.

To me it overall doesn't hold up quite as well as Yakuza 0, but it was still a fun ride and the continuation of an intriguing story. And you still get to feel like a proper badass that punches the living daylights out of every fool that dares to stand in your way. Fantasy fulfillment at its finest. If you liked Y0 and want to keep going into the series, do - you'll be spoiled with hours and hours of entertainment.

Though... note... the boss design in this game is... not the best. If you reach a boss and suddenly find yourself ramming into a progression brick wall, don't be ashamed to turn the difficulty down to Easy to compensate. It's the game's fault, not yours. (Or rather, if it is your fault, then going to Easy probably won't be enough to help you get by anyway.)

An enthralling rogue-like (if that's the term?) space survival game using a slick terminal interface and a fleet of drones.

Do be warned that if you want to do well at this game, you need to have quick and accurate typing skills. Not having them can easily lead to frustration as this game is not turnbased and you cannot pause when bad things start to happen. The game does give you some nice difficulty options however, if you need to make it easier or just find certain elements of the game to be annoying.

Overview
This... this is exactly what I would want out of a full space game. No overuse of menus to do every single thing from one convenient comfy chair. No invisible cargo handled by a cockpit terminal. You actually have to use terminals in each room of your ship to do various things with your ship, like outfit your surface rover, handle cargo, fix engineering issues, alter life support, and maintain your health. If a full proper space game with exploration and trading had this style of ship management, I'd be addicted for life.

Granted, the scope of this game isn't -that- big. You only explore one planet per run, though its layout is randomized each run, as is your character's background. But exploring the surface to find modules to research is fascinating, and oddly scary at times. Not to mention there's a couple very... unique events that can happen, which hit you HARD if you're not expecting them.

Ultimately your goal is to leave with enough valuables to rack up a score, without losing too much health or dying. The "timer" is handled by a constant radiation threat, which is... a somewhat controversial design decision, but it helps to not stretch out a run too long.

Might be worth full price if you enjoy the sound of everything I said so far, if unsure, definitely get it next time it goes on sale - it'll be well worth the price then, even if you only play a handful of runs and stop there.

Further advice:
  • If you don't care about your ending "Score" and only want to explore and see what happens in your epilogue, turn on Easy Mode in the options. It cuts your score into 1/3 its value, but you take radiation at half speed so you have more time to explore.

  • Use the medbay often, every 10 minutes at least. It's not my favorite part of the gameplay, but it's necessary.

  • If desired, use the options menu to set your starting loadout. The compass and power manager are easy to get by without, and free up two inventory slots on your rover to pick up new modules to research. You can get by without the status module too, though for your first run you might want to hang onto it as you learn how everything works.

  • Don't look up anything about what events can happen in this game unless you absolutely don't care about being spoiled. There's several unique and creepy events that can happen that work WAY better when you aren't expecting it. (HOWEVER, one of them involved hallucinations that include a silent jumpscare - if you don't like the sound of that, there's an option to turn it off in the options. The rest of that event is just creepy stuff around your environment, nothing that leaps out at you with a loud sound or anything like that.)

  • If you want your character to survive, consider leaving before the radiation gets above around 2,500 or so after medbay-ing. At that point you're taking sickness with you and might die shortly after getting home, or even in transit, depending on how far you let it progress.

  • And lastly, let the atmosphere sink in. Maybe play in the dark with your headphones on and no distractions. This isn't meant to get you scared or creeped out - the whole point of this is space dread similar to (for example) Ripley from the Alien movies exploring an unknown planet all by herself. Let it immerse you and you'll get more out of it than you would otherwise.

A decent amount of complexity with none of the stress. If you like the idea of building up a network of transporting goods and efficiently growing a town under your hand, without any of the more stressful elements like starvation or war getting in the way, this one's for you.

It's a great chill game to play while watching Netflix or Youtube, and when you reach later stages of the game it's genuinely fun to angle the camera around your city, watching all the workers and vehicles ferrying goods about and making bank for you. Tons of moving pieces and almost zero lag or stuttering. Of course the graphics are pixel-style to help make that feasible, but that doesn't stop it from being rather beautiful at times.

Probably the biggest disappointment about this game is that you're railroaded more than it appears. A lot of the story beats are more or less gonna go the same way no matter what.

However, your choices do have some impact, and in some meaningful places too. The story progression is interesting, chill scenes are chill, tense scenes are tense (more than once I was in a scene that actually had me worried because I wanted to get a good outcome, I was never uncaring about the person I was or the NPC I was with).

Some pretty good music along the way too.

I'd say maybe pick this up at a discount if you're not sure about buying (though, considering how long the game can go, $20 seems pretty good). I enjoyed my time with it but if your biggest draw is the "your choices matter" idea, then you might be disappointed. If you instead prefer to see the story play out while having some moments of influence along the way, I think it'll be your jam.

My first run was about 8 hours. That may vary as scene order and such is somewhat randomized.

Non-spoiler TL;DR - a great experience for anyone who enjoyed the base game, with some unfortunate flaws. Worth it nevertheless. If you want more Outer Wilds, want more of that first-time blind play feel, this is it.

--------------------------

More detail below, but spoilers are present.

The new area is an amazing place to explore, and looks incredible. I was overwhelmed trying to figure out where to go next and what to check out. Five stars on that alone.

The puzzles are interesting, and the setting behind them. More of that same feel in the base game of "I want to find out more".

The last third or so of the DLC, namely the dreamworld sequences with extremely dark areas and stealth gameplay are very unpleasant. The idea of these sections is sound and looks good on paper, but trying to actually play and figure them out is a slog. Especially since you have to spend several minutes backtracking each time you fail, making each failure gratingly annoying.

The part about finding glitches to better explore the dreamworld is very, very cool. Unfortunately the frustration I had over the gameplay needed to get that far pretty much soured it entirely, especially when I had to look up help in guides to figure out how to get past multiple non-intuitive puzzles.

The end payoff though? Worth it... although brief. After getting your final answers it seems to just... stop, with you wondering if there's somewhere else to go or other conversation to have, but no, not really. You're done, and it's communicated as well as a sentence that just... ends prematurely with no punctuation, like this

...though if you then beat the base game again, there might be something new waiting for you...

-----------------------------

I enjoyed this DLC, overall. I just wish that one third of the game had been handled better, to prevent frustration. It isn't just me, there are MANY in the forums all talking about / asking for help with those sections because of how big a pain they are. But pretty much everything else is rock solid. Had that part been done well, it would have been a perfect 10/10.

Basically, yes, worth it, but be prepared to look up help if those last parts feel way too hard or cumbersome to figure out for yourself. You'd hardly be the only one.

Considering the price at the time, I think it's a worthwhile buy. The formula no doubt gets less scary as you play (and possibly more repetitive) but the gameplay loop is well crafted. Figure out which stimuli the ghost responds to, categorize the ghost, complete the objectives and get out alive.

It's borderline terrifying alone, and even with a friend it can be nerve-wracking. Especially if someone dies and you can't consult them anymore (unless you do so outside the game which just ruins the experience for yourself, so don't bother).

Long story short, it's like a less complex 3D first-person Factorio. Also focuses more on building than combat (your base is never at threat of being attacked or destroyed, only the player characters and their inventory are at risk).

The game itself is fun and enjoyable, and you'll likely be able to tell if you'd enjoy it or not just by looking at it.

The developers have been... shady in their dealings with the community in the past, admittedly. From their handling of being an Epic exclusive to the teasing-at-best, rudely-snide-at-worst PR concerning a Steam release... it was a true disappointment to see every time one wanted to look in on the progress related to porting the game. But now it's here, and as far as I can tell it works right out of the gate, and up to date in patches as the EGS version.

I'm very glad I waited to buy this on Steam instead of Epic. Now I can enjoy it on a platform I won't feel bad about showing monetary support to. Granted, I don't hate CSS for taking the deal - it was an absurdly good deal. But I wish to avoid supporting Epic due to their poor business practices and anti-consumer methods. CSS though? They made a cool game. They deserve support. And now I can do so and feel good for it. Perfect.
