I play both vanilla Daggerfall and a heavily modded Daggerfall Unity. Any way you slice it, the scale and immersion and possibilities of this game have yet to be matched.

With a little bit of research and patience, vanilla isn't that hard to get into to enjoy a pure retro RPG experience, but the passion and dedication of the DFU modding scene can't be understated. It can be an adventure in itself to browse the Nexus mods page for Daggerfall Unity and it makes this game absolutely bursting with life and possibilities.

I love Vanilla DF all the same but I have to praise the hard work of the Unity modding community to extend this game well past it's initial vision and potential.

Go get into this game. Welcome to your new obsession.

I should preface this by saying I have no nostalgia for this game in particular. I was born when this game came out and my first Elder Scrolls game was Skyrim.

That said, I adore this game. I understand that I may be a special breed of nostalgic and autistic but I really don’t think this game is that hard to get into.
It frustrates me that people think this game is “unplayable” just because they’re not used to it yet. With just a bit of practice, the complaints about the controls are very exaggerated.

Take the time to do a bit of research, read the player manual, read up on some tips. This game is an adventure, it’s a story about becoming stronger and overcoming intimidating odds. Explore, let yourself become lost in this dangerous and magical world, kill monsters and find treasure, get better armor and weapons and keep trying until you accomplish what you couldn’t before. Get lost in a giant dungeon and make it out by the skin of your teeth and get a good night’s sleep in the local tavern, stock up on more healing potions and look forward to diving back in and getting a little further than you did the last time until you finally get that staff piece that you worked so hard for.

There’s beauty in its simplicity, the gameplay loop is addictive, and it all makes me feel something about video games that I haven’t felt in a long time. It’s not just a program running on my computer or just a video game that I have to beat, it’s a world that was created for me to go on an adventure. Using my imagination makes me feel a bit like a kid again. It reminds me of playing RuneScape, not thinking about the limitations of the technology but just focusing on the world and the adventure.

I just love Elder Scrolls so much, all of them. The series just provides a level of immersion that’s near unmatched, and Arena is no exception.

Give it a try, give it some commitment. You might find something special.

Some tips:

negative armor numbers are good, the lower the number the more protected you are (it’s weird, I know)

It’s not hard to get out of the first dungeon, she literally tells you to go southwest. Keep going south and west, you’ll find the exit. But take the time to explore, level up and find loot early on, you can sleep on the stone slabs to heal.

The mages guild sells potions to everyone, stock up on healing potions before going into a dungeon and drink them like water

Right clicking on the map icon (or shift + m) lets you fast travel anywhere. Dungeons that you have been told about will appear on the world map

Get that agility up! Either you hit the enemy or you don’t. Your agility stat makes it so that you do.

How you swing your weapon does matter. Horizontal cuts and forward thrusts have a higher chance of hitting. Diagonal and vertical cuts don’t hit as often but do more damage. If you’re missing a lot, try moving your mouse forward more.

TLDR: this game rules, git gud, fite me

I don't think there's any shooter that controls as satisfyingly and buttery smooth as Doom does. In 1993 it pioneered what the genre would become, but also perfected it in its first attempt. I even think the first game is better than Doom 2, I just prefer the tighter and more maze-like level designs to the sprawling city maps.

This game is just about perfect. And while it may not be quite my favorite classic shooter (that would be Half-Life, which is thanks to Quake, which is thanks to Doom), it's probably the one that's the most FUN to play.

That's all I can say about Doom. It's just FUN.

Get accustomed to how the game feels and play on Ultra-Violence, this game is like popping bubble wrap.

This is my game of the year, no doubt.

For a game made to emulate a 15 year old's vision of the most badass shooter ever made, there were no sacrifices from the love, care, and attention to detail that went into this.

There are SO MANY little things to notice around the environments, you can spend a long time just exploring the maps and looking at all the little details. This game also provides a really interesting and subtle look into Zane as a character. For example, some of the dialogue from the rats that's ridiculously easy to miss, the way he reacts to his mom's death, and even reminiscing about his childhood in some of the bonus levels.

And don't let the garish visuals fool you, the gameplay is so solid. This game is legitimately SO much fun, some of the best boomer shooting I've played with a fantastic loadout of weapons.

Jay Tholen is an absolute genius.

I really love the simplicity of this game. The menus are clean and compact, the screen isn't cluttered with alerts and icons, no complicated systems to overwhelm you, each class only has like 4 predetermined main skills to worry about...

Despite that, there's a LOT of content to play through and lots of things to work toward, and the game is bursting with charm. The story and cutscenes are so lighthearted and endearing. The graphics are nostalgic and colorful.

I've been going through a great number of MMOs and I really just needed something simple to progress through, with simple goals to achieve. And you can change classes (and are encouraged to) literally whenever you want, so there aren't even any strict commitments to worry about.

I was happy to spend some money to get some neat cosmetics early on, and I look forward to participating in future updates!

My name is Alex, I've been questioning my gender for a long time, and I've been recently dabbling in the idea of committing to a full transition but the fear and anxiety keeps holding me back.
What would my family do? What if I don't ever look the way I want to? What if I regret it?

I needed this game. At times I felt like it was speaking directly to me (helped by the fact I share a name with the main character), and a lot of the questions and fears I have were addressed and I could really feel in my heart what the game was saying.

The characters and writing are wonderful (the dialogue is scarily real, like wonderful nostalgic cringe), the game gets kinda creepy and meta (which I always love), I absolutely LOVE late-90s internet aesthetic, and like I said the message just resonated with me so strongly. And it all culminates into a climax that's just like.. Undertale levels of wholesome and heartwarming.

Thank you for this game, it will be on my mind for a very long time. ♥

maybe i really will figure it out
