Wonderful art style and atmosphere, feels great to play, and clearly made by people who understand why cats are so good.

A spooky Half-Life 2-style first-person game where you explore semi-open levels, shoot enemies, solve puzzles, and do some light platforming. The tone and narrative should appeal to fans of horror, but doesn't get too heavy or gruesome. There's some nice subversion of genre tropes, decent writing, and gameplay that's done well enough to be engaging despite being fairly simple.

Wonderful game, absolutely recommend to anyone who enjoys roguelike deckbuilders such as Slay the Spire, or card battle games in general. There's a lot more to this game than first appears, both narrative and gameplay-wise; after about 8 hours playing it really opened up for me. But even if it had ended after those few hours this game would still be well worth full price, just for the relatively simple but satisfying gameplay and clever presentation.

Half-Life 2 is probably my favourite game. Black Mesa takes good stuff from HL1 and HL2, and the result is this expertly-crafted game that feels like a true prequel. More fun than most AAA titles out there.

Early Access Review
A roguelike (rogue-lite?) with much more entertaining narrative design and combat than any other I've played.

I have casually played several games in this genre (Diablo 2 & 3, Torchlight 1 & 2, Titan Quest, Grim Dawn), and Path of Exile may be my favourite. It's not too readily accessible, as there are many options to consider and systems to learn, but the result is that you can create a character that feels customised to fight exactly how you want them to. I love the dark tribal fantasy atmosphere and aesthetic, and the lore is something a bit different than I'm used to. The development team is passionate and dedicated, constantly polishing, updating, and adding content. All this is even more impressive considering you are never compelled to pay anything to play Path of Exile. There are many microtransactions, and the game will advertise them to you, but the gameplay itself is completely unaffected. I wholeheartedly recommend Path of Exile to any ARPG fan.

This game is a smart-ass, mostly to its benefit. MOSTLY.

There are a lot of reasons I love this game, most of them difficult to convey second-hand.

It's made especially to appeal to gamers, but has enough general appeal that I would recommend it to anyone. It laughs at itself then looks you in the eye and demands to be taken seriously. It pays tribute to some of the oldest ideas in gaming while simultaneously delivering experiences never before encountered. It will occupy your thoughts for a long time. It has fantastic music.

That said, I encourage you to ignore anything you may have heard about this game from anyone. What you get out of it depends largely on yourself.
