this game bolsters itself on subtlety. this works for and against it. it's by no means groundbreaking however the tone is pleasant. if you want it, wait for a sale because it's not very long and the replay value is almost nonexisitent unless you feel like unlocking the special features. personally, i think i was only motivated to because i thought that everything ended a bit too soon. if you're the introspective type the stuff presented isn't something you haven't thought of on your own but the world is surprisingly immersive despite it's simplicity.

if nothing else, the soundtrack is fun to listen to. it was a decent trip while it lasted. the story seems like you may have to fill in some of the empty spaces. all in all, i'd probably file this under ' an aquired taste '.

( this is probably one of my favorite games in my library so i might be biased, anyway: )

this is a really charming point & click adventure. visually, it's another indie title with pixel graphics, but the composition and color pallette help it to stand out from the rest. this combined with the sounds and music, only add to the atmosphere. the soundtrack is soothing and calming, which is a nice backdrop for all the puzzle solving.

the main mechanic involves a music note system. you'll be relying pretty heavily on your ears, at least at first, especially if you want to unlock all the achievements.

difficulty-wise, it's pretty easy. most of the time. the only thing that might cause you real trouble is the very end. there are guides in case you get stuck though. it's not that long, but there's a new game+ option for completionists ( or if you can't get enough of it ).

- TIPS -
* double-click to run
* don't be afraid to die
* this is part one of two
* buy this game

i'm culturally familiar with the mood and premise of this game. i figured it would be a no-brainer that i would undoubtedly love this title. it has all the right ingredients: female protagonist, emphasis on feelings and story, decent enough looking despite budget constraints, west coast / indie / hipster kid aesthetics, so what went wrong here?

honestly, i was genuinely taken aback when i realized, not only do i not like this game, i downright hate it. to state it simply: it's shallow, ham-fisted, pretentious, and overpriced.

i play titles like this all the time or, at the very least, i tend to find myself interested in them so, this isn't just some disgruntled neckbeard who spends their time complaining about ' skeletons ' because i could easily qualify for being deserving of that label. i have no issue with ' walking simulators ' or ' empathy games '. i enjoy playing things with female protagonists, non-linear or more experimental gameplay, but this one just did not do it for me.

instead, what it did manage to do was irritate me to the point that i did not, and probably will not, ever finish.

the main reason being that it's boring. i am truly baffled that i feel this though, because i've played games like qora, which some could ( rightly ) argue is sleep inducing, but despite it not being action packed and you not doing much besides walking and engaging in very sparse dialogue, i had no problems, genuinely enjoyed it and have played through it at least 3 times.

as far as this title goes, the narrative seems stilted and forced. i didn't really connect to the protagonist in any meaningful way. i wasn't convinced to care about her or her family's situation. maybe i played this at a strange time and was somehow desensitized, but it all just seemed lifeless and painfully predictable.

gameplay left me feeling that achieving objectives was more like busywork and a chore than an actual accomplishment. there were several times where it seemed as if whatever i did achieve had only been obtainable because it had been an exercise in blind guessing. i remember doing a lot of back-tracking and finding myself triggering the same scripted dialogue which, since i already wasn't enjoying myself that much, further broke the immersion and added to my irritation.

i love arthouse films, indie games, and different types of counter-culture. i am the first person to scoff when someone calls anything ' pretentious ' --and i cannot believe i am saying this--this game really is.

it's pretty difficult to review something like this because it's heralded as being emotionally captivating and any opinion on this sort of subject is nothing short of subjective however, as far as i'm concerned, all of the fanfare, accolades, and ecstatic reviews were just overhype and lies.

i could be wrong. i don't mind.

if there's something that touches you strongly while playing this, should you decide to purchase it or, if you already have and feel like what i'm saying is just some knee-jerk reaction, contrarianism, or generic ' indie hatred ' then, we can both spend a little bit of time being wrong. either way, to the surprise of even me, i do not like this game and i really regret my purchase.

if the refund policy was in effect back then, i can guarantee you that i would've felt absolutely no guilt returning this. there are plenty of nice indie games out there that i actually enjoy and i really was bummed out that this couldn't be one of them.

this review may sound harsh but that's just the cold sting of disappointment.

life is strange ( which i emphatically suggest you pick up instead ) hits on a lot of notes that this game grazes but all the characters seem like real, fleshed out people. the plot and mood definitely lean ' west coast suburban hipster kid aesthetics / art students who love twin peaks ' but, unlike this game, that doesn't give me the urge to projectile vomit. unlike this game, i actually felt things--real things--while playing across the episodes. unlike this game, i didn't feel like i was being robbed for the price of admission.

just take your 19.99 and buy life is strange instead.

if you ever wondered why people bothered to make a parody of portland, oregon ( portlandia ) this is p much it in one neat, overpriced as ♥♥♥♥ package. it appeals to your nostalgia in the most shallow way possible. it kinda grosses me out that this game has such a high rep for having a ' deep story ' because let me tell you man: uh. no. if it's not on sale don't bother. you could pass it altogether also. that works too.
