So... Mad Max eh? This game had it harsh. A new IP released at the same time as MGSV:TPP thus being overshadowed by it. Most professional reviewers wrote it off as really repetitive, while that is true, people easily forget that every single game is repetitive. The game is good, not the best one around but still able to provide with tons of hours of fun.

So here goes

This is a post apocalyptic 3D person action game with elements of RPG's

Pros
  • Tons of Content
  • Immersive World
  • Fun Car Combat
  • A lot of Vehicle Customization
  • Decent Enemy Vehicle Variety and AI
  • Beautiful Scenery
  • In Game Screenshot Mode
  • Great Optimization

Cons
  • Bad Max Upgrades
  • Bad On-Foot Enemy Variety
  • Not Enough Vehicle Gameplay (other than driving around)
  • Rushed Story
  • Copy and Paste Bosses

Notable Features
  • Servicable Arkham Style Combat
  • No Memorable Music

The game is filled to the brim with things you can do, from simple scavenging locations to taking down big scary camps which can be quite challenging at times (at least taking down the perimeter defences)
Now this is the main reason this game is judged a lot and I don't think thats fair at all. Every activity you do makes sense and it all helps immerse you into this world. This is something most other open world games DON'T have. Also the places you visit vary a lot and there is a surprising attention to detail you wouldn't expect from this.

The car combat is the strong point of this game.
The on-foot combat is nothing to write home about, just a simpler arkham style mechanic (as if it wasn't simple enough) but it is servicable. The problem doesn't lie with its existence but that you do a lot more on-foot combat rather than in the car. For every convoy you fight there are 3 more camps to take down and a lot more bosses on foot rather than vehicle bosses (which one would expect from a game like this but sadly it isn't the case).

There is a decent enough enemy variety when it comes to cars although most cars are the same across the different enemy factions of the game, the on-foot enemies however, while the game does try to make it out like there are a lot of different types of them, they mostly behave the same, one will have a simple signature move but other than that they will attack one at a time in most cases and almost all of the attacks can be countered the same way. There's only 1 different soldier across the different factions.
There are a couple of vehicle bosses but they are really late in the game and there were only 2 types of on-foot bosses and one of the 2 was coppied for about 10 BLOODY TIMES and the only thing that changes every time was the weakness. They hardly changed the appearence.
The AI was fun to go against while on car, the different types of enemies worked well together and provided a challenge. Kept you on your toes and made you prioritize your targets, on-foot however all they did was charge at you.

The visuals aren't bad at all and the game runs smooth as butter, the view distance is admirable and they have managed to make a desert really beautiful to look at, filled with all sorts of different things to explore. Sound quality was ok but there were some syncining issues here and there nothing gamebreaking. Mouse can be used in the GUI so there's nothing to worry about there. I ended up turning the music off because the music was simply MEH at best. It was just made to fit the situations and to be honest the only time I actually noticed any music playing was during the camp fights... I just thought the game was much more enjoyable without it, at parts I ended up turning on my own music.

The customizations for Max are really generic, especially the skills, unlocking moves like disarming someone or bashing their heads into the wall is laughable and unlocking those with parts no less but the vehicle customizations is where it's at (yet again, what a surprise) Not simply upgrades that make your car better but there is some choice to be had, if you want a fast car you will have to drop the defence and attack and if you want a tank you will be really slow or you can balance it out, it's up to you although I would really appreciate more car bodies. I mean 3 of them look really similar for crying out loud and there's only six. There's also a bit of base management. All you really do is gather scrap for them and find parts for their projects. Once you have fully completed a stronghold you will never run out of ammo, fuel, water etc again. So that kind of defeats the purpose of conservation.

The story is... well.... eh.... Sigh

There's an in-game screenshot mode with different options and themes which I find awesome and a feature most games should have. I spent a decent amount of time with it.

This game had a lot of potential but there's still a lot of fun to be had. Definitely recommended to completionists and the rest, grab it while it is on sale.
