Just wow. This is awesome!

This game is pretty much Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion rebuild with improvements. They took pretty much everything that was good and build it again. Just with more modern improvments changes. Yes, not everything is the same (Faction System, Trading) but i think it is a round package.

But now the big part... the new Engine! Not only does it look awesome.. i just runs well! Really well! 10 Players with maxed out Fleet Cap on a big map? No problem. Fast Forward 2x Times? Still no problem.
Its just amazing how well it runs.

Soundtrack and sound design is also good. They essentiely got the old voices and even redid the same voicelines plus a ton of new ones.

The game just feels like Sins 1, as you remeber it in your head from back in the day, just better.

Early Access Review
Since people apparently can't read, here's the copy-paste from the store page:

FREE-TO-PLAY VERSION!
The Free-to-Play version allows players to create one character and play Normal mode on all maps, complete quests, and build a stash of loot! Players who enjoy their time with the free version and want to experience everything the game has to offer can upgrade to the full version for 15 Redstone shards. The full version of the game includes access to the High-Roller mode, where players can equip their hard earned gear to take on even more dangerous dungeons and up the stakes. Players will also gain access to the marketplace where they can trade with other adventurers, 9 total character slots, and the Shared Stash!

We hope that this version will give players a chance to experience some of what Dark and Darker has to offer, and to give players who have not played since the playtests a chance to see what's new before they dive into the full edition.

Edit: 21.11.2024
After the announcement that they simply pull the support for Homeworld 3 i have to change the review to a thumbs down. Many people find the state of the game simply not acceptable. I stand by my review that the game is not as bad as people say. But you can't simply drop support after 6 months with so many problems.
Only get it in a deep sale…

tldr: Even if Homeworld 3 is not as good as Homeworld 1, Cataclysm or 2, it still is a good RTS game. You can have plenty of fun with the Campaign, the kinda rogue like War Game mode (Solo or Coop) or the classic Skirmish.

Presentation:
Homeworld 3 simply looks awesome. The Ship models and Maps are beautiful. The cutscenes look good and the UI is awesome. But the graphics come at a cost of very low FPS in big fights.

Story:
Quite the point of contention if you read other comments. But I find it alright. I find the comparison to Homeworld 1&2 funny. I replayed both for the release of Homeworld 3. I think many just talk from nostalgia. The story of Homeworld 1 is so short it could be explained in 5 sentences. The same with the story of Homeworld 2, just with a little more fluff here and there (like captain Soban). Don't get me wrong, Homeworld 1&2 Campaigns are amazing. But more because of the missions and atmosphere. That is maybe the main weakpoint of Homeworld 3. The atmosphere is just not as good as Homeworld 1&2.

Sound:
Short and simple. VFX sound is amazing. Voice and combat chatter is good. Music is alright but sometimes forgettable.

Gameplay:
This is maybe the biggest flaw for the game and I agree with many others. It’s just too fast for a Homeworld game. The small maps also contribute to that. Everything is right on top of you. Production is also too fast, you can build everything in parallel. The combat itself looks and sounds awesome. It’s just so fast that you can never even take a look :(
You also don't have to think much. You can and should counter the units, but the most important thing is just to keep ALL the unit queues filled so you have enough replacements for all the losses. Money is rarely a problem.

Campaign:
The missions are great, I think. As varied as in Homeworld 1&2. The obligatory “Asteroid mission” is the best version yet :D
You have to be careful again not to finish the mission too early or you lose out on many RU’s.
I like this more than in the Remake where it auto collects everything after a mission. I simply stopped gathering RU’s in Homeworld 1&2 mission’s and lived from my stockpile. I would get everything anyway after the mission so there was no point for me.

TL;DR:
I like the game but can not give a Review yet. But the technical state is absolutely atrocious. If a 4090 with a 5900X can not get a decent or at least stable framerate there is something broken. CAPCOM needs to do some improvements here and till they do it I give a thumbs down even though i keep playing it.

DLCs:
Classic CAPCOM. It’s the same with RE Village, RE 4 Remake, Monster Hunter World and Rise. I'm more surprised that it's only for Dragon's Dogma that everybody got mad. Anyway.. I don't know why they add the pointless DLC in every game. And I really mean pointless. The game seems not altered or changed to make you want or need to buy them. All restrictions are the same as Dragon's Dogma 1. Even more funny. You feel stupid if you buy it because how stupidly easy and cheap it is to buy the SAME STUFF ingame by just playing the game. If you still want more… There are already mods that can help you.

Performance:
The performance is terrible. It's all the bad stuff. Low FPS that are strongly fluctuating and atrocious frametimes. It doesn't feel good to play. Cities and even little villages are so bad that I have barely 30FPS WITH bad frametimes. I don't know what CAPCOM did because other RE Engine games run so much better. They have to fix it fast.
If you look at console benchmarks you can see they can do better. The FPS on Consoles is between 30 and 45 FPS from what i saw. But with way better frametimes. So it feels better to play according to Digital Foundry for example. (Don't have the console version myself.)

Some things that i did that make the game run slightly less ♥♥♥♥:
- Put the DD2 process on high in task manager (could be placebo)
- Use DLSS Framegen Mod from Nexus. There is also an AMD Framegen Mod for AMD Cards and NV Cards below the 4000er Series. (FSR looks good in this game.)

My Settings: DLSS on Quality, Reflex on+Boost, Vsync Off and put the FPS Limit ingame on 60. It will limit only the real frames to 60 and will go up to 120 with framegen. People report Crashing if you don't limit your FPS.
I play in 1440p with everything to the max with RT on. Nothing really seems to help performance because its all CPU so at least i get all the goodys :D

Review of the actual game comes later. This game is big and I'm only 20 hours in. But i think people should know the bad state that this great game comes in :(

Early Access Review
This game is already excellent for my taste. The core gameplay loop is really addicting and feels great to play. The sound and graphic design are a great fit and provide a good atmosphere for what the game is trying to do.
I can also highly recommend the soundtrack. It's just so good!

The latest update (beta branch) provides reworks (bartering, economy, stats, enemy ai), balancing changes and bug fixes that feel all great in my first couple of rounds that i played on a new save.

I'm excited about what the developers will add in the future. The gameplay loop is already solid and just needs more “stuff” (weapons, skills, enemies, etc) to get even better. The roadmap shows that they have a vision for the game and I see much of what I would like to be added there.

Rimword is simply one of the best games out there. It keeps getting better with every Addon from the developer and every Mod that the awesome community makes.
