TL;DR: It's worth the money no matter how much you spend, and it's worth playing as long as you're in it for some mech-smashing goodness.

If you're already a fan of Battletech or MechWarrior, you should already be sold

Sure, it's a game made in the Cry Engine 2012, and it looks it. However, the balancing is tight for competitiveness, restricted one shot kills, and the mech feel is just right.

Some people will complain about the limited selection of game modes and map options, the lack of some end game goal, or understandably the ghost heat[mwo.nav-alpha.com]. But ya know what, they're forgetting the whole point of Battletech... to smash mechs together and see what happens as they take damage![/i]

Free to Play, NOT Pay to Win, No End in Sight

The FTP sphere is loaded with low quality, low effort, grindathon, crap games. This is not one of them. Don't want to pay for anything? Fine, there's monthly events for free mechs (good ones), currencies, and gear. Very easy battle passes, with options for small bonuses with purchases. The community is pretty great, even considering the random internet jerkoffs you'll always encounter. The devs show no sign of slowing down, even though it seems like they've dropped the ball on the game modes.

Want to whale out and drop a thousand dollars? Cool, thanks for supporting the devs, but wait for the Steam Summer Sale. Oh, and keep in mind all it does is give you more variety sooner. You are NOT going to win based on the mech you play, so much as how you tweak it and pilot it.... and dumb luck in positioning with your team.

Teamwork Makes the Dreamwork

Understand that this is still an online arena elimination game. Unlike most other games in the genre, your skills will only get you so far depending on your teammates abilities to play and cooperate. Quick Play is what most people use, and it is random, and it swings wildly. If you group up with three friends to form a cohesive lance, and don't miss a single ton of optimized loadouts, your chances of victory quadruple in all situations. Lone wolfing does not pay out every time.
