It's important to store any lossy formats in a cool dry place, otherwise they *will* decay in sound quality over time.
.m4a's are an exception, it's a good idea to keep them in a cupboard and someplace semi-warm.
But otherwise, if you don't want a fridge or cupboard for your harddrive, flac is the way to go. I don't want to risk my .mp3s spoiling just because of one power outage.
