It's a shame what happened to this game.

To be honest, I'm a huge fan of the shift to 5v5. I think the core gameplay is much better than it was, and overall the game is more dynamic and DMing feels fun. I've played the game since original beta, so I have a pretty good understanding of the game and how it's played over the years.

The main issue is that everything else surrounding the game is so bad that it makes you hate the game. Monetization is super cynical and pretty standard for 2023, which means you always feel like crap about it, unless you're ultra wealthy. Add on the battle pass system for FOMO and it just makes you not want to play at all once you fall behind, which you will.

I know a lot of people were excited about the fully fleshed-out PvE Hero mode which looked really fun and creative. While I'm glad some of the maps will be released, the scrapping of what sounded like a solid PvE co-op experience really bummed me out and killed any further interest in the game as a whole.

If you won't spend any money, it's honestly solid. But you'll want to, and feel bad about it.
