Early Access Review
This is genuinely a great competitor to DBD. It has so much going for it at the moment and could easily compete.

So why should you play it over DBD?

Killers, or Specters as they're called, have a BUILT-IN mobility tool. This addresses the map pressure problem a lot of DBD killers face, which is why most of DBD's weakest killers are the ones with no movement options. DBD addresses this with perks, providing no in-game way to get pressure with low-mobility killers without using 1/4 of your perk slots that are locked behind a tedious grind.

Speaking of, the grind in this game- at least for Specter, is very forgiving. Once you unlock a perk, you have it for ALL your characters. As for survivors, unless you exceed that match you won't match the Specter's average XP gain, which should be addressed and hopefully fixed.

Survivors all have different abilities too. This spices up the Survivor experience, making each Survivor different makes them more than just glorified skins and allows for more interesting game-play and strategy for both sides, like how a killer might want to target or ignore survivors who may have an ability to hinder their plan.

Healing in this game is hard to come by, maybe even a little TOO hard. However, this does have the effect of making hits you get as Specter matter quite a lot. Survivors are a lot more fragile in this game, and can't take stab after stab after stab as they can in DBD. In return, they can fight back against the killer. Stunning, blinding, or even killing the Specter if they complete all rituals.

One of the best games I've ever played. Been playing since beta, and haven't regretted a single minute spent.

This game seems like the perfect game for me - and at one point I'd even say it was. What once started out as a hardcore, unforgiving shooter with an occult southern gothic / western theme has been watered down by a focus on competition over artstyle and an increase in skins that don't feel like the same Hunt: Showdown I played in 2018.

If you want a good competitive shooter, yes, play it. But I didn't want it.

The worst DLC to have come out in a long, long time.

The Killer is absolutely, positively one of the worst to ever come out. The idea sounds really cool on paper, but in practice its annoying and ineffective. Take everything you learn in the game as survivor, and throw it out the window. Take everything you learn as killer, and forget that too. The chases are boring and end the same way, you attacking someone, and either tunneling them down until they eventually go down or go to find someone else and lose everybody.

The power itself removes all counterplay. Stealth is out the window, as if you're near him he'll get a notification you're there. Making him miss to buy some time is out the window, as he has literally no cooldown for missed attacks. Looping, mindgames, etc are all useless because he can vault pallets and windows. Even then, he's STILL a low-tier killer. There's no point to even heal as a survivor, as the only way he has the opportunity to catch you is using his power, because of his 110% movement speed instead of the base 115%. Slow killers are a nightmare to chase without their power.

The perks he comes with are decent at best. Discordance is probably the only worthwhile one, but perks like Mad Grit and Iron Maiden are specifically for one situation that might not even come up in a game, and a waste of a perk slot.

The survivor's perks are a bit better, Aftercare seems interesting. Breakdown is weird, and doesn't seem to have much use. Distortion is good if you're tired of BBQ and Chili.

To make this Killer worthwhile, he needs a complete rework. The power is uninteresting, ineffective, and boring for both sides. Absolutely no brain is required to win a chase, and its still hard to do so.

hes good now lmao

100% worth the money, with a great and active community too.
It has everything I love in a game, 2D style rougelike with a pixel theme, plus new modding tools being updated to make a great and diverse experience every run.
The difficulty feels really balanced, like every death is your fault, with the little kinks in weapon balance being worked out in updates.
The bosses are really fun (except for HotK >:((() and diverse, each taking a different approach to beat.
Basically good game buy now
