Game: Battle Realms: Zen Edition

Version as of time writing: v.1.56

State of the Game: Re-release thus marking it as Early Access

Disclaimer: The opinion in this post is highly personal, thus subjective. I always recommend checking the game for yourself, watching gameplay videos of it and the likes.

While playing: I am in love with this game. Maybe it is the nostalgia, since i played this game a long time ago. I enjoy it even to this day! I’m thankful to the team for bringing back my ‘childhood’ to steam and even updating and working on it!

Plot: There is a story revolving around the four clans: 1. Wolf, 2. Dragon, 3. Lotus, 4. Rat Snake. You get put in different roles, depending on the mission and if it is the Winter of the Wolf DLC (put into this version) or not. I won’t spoil, but it’s just a pleasant story.

Dialogue: Story is transmitted through gameplay and talking between characters in small ‘cutscenes’. It’s a hardcoded dialogue, so don’t worry to make any wrong choices (looking at you Shepherd!)

Gameplay: You build your worker huts and get them to gather rice and water. Those are the two basic resources you need for everything. Then there is also your ‘manpower’ and ying-yang-points, as well as horses. Basically you build facilities, train units and destroy enemies.

Genre: RTS

Competition: Since Battle Realms was close to being forgotten, i would say there isn’t any immediate competition. If you want to look for some tho, just hit RTS into steam and look at what you’ll find.

---{Graphics}---
☑ Beautiful
☐ Good
☐ Decent
☐ Bad
☐ Pixelparty

Notes: Remember the first release date: 2001. Winter of the Wolf followed in the year after. It holds up for its generation.

Art Style: Alternative Timeline between Stone age and 1000 bc? Depends on the faction.

---{Animations and Effects}---
☐ So beautiful and realistic
☑ Great
☐ Decent
☐ Have seen better
☐ Kinda laggy, unpolished or a plain hindrance
☐ No animations or effects would have done a better job

---{Audio}---
☐ Better than reality / Made me dance
☐ Very good / I want to hear more
☑ Good / accompanies the environment and action well
☐ Decent. Didn’t kill me but could have been better
☐ Bad
☐ I died. Autistic screeching = game sound.

Notes: Accentuates the environment and fights very well. The audio variance isn’t that big or uber clear on the ears, but also no earr*pe. For the time it was released, it is very well manufactured.

---{Difficulity}---
☐ 1-Click-Pony
☐ Easy
☑ Medium (have to use your brain)
☐ Hard (difficult to master)
☐ Really Hard
☐ Dark Souls (get gud)
☐ Hell

Notes: It was easier back in the days. With the re-release, you get new mechanics added by the team, which heightens the complexion of the fights and stops you from just zerging your way with one type of unit.

---{Gameplay Loop / Grind}---
☑ Nothing to grind
☐ Leaderboards / Achievement hunters / Ranklords
☐ Average grind level
☐ Too much grind
☐ Use all of your spare time
☐ Give up on Job, Family, Friends, Pets, Kids and Future

---{Story}---
☐ Story go boom. No seriously. Nothing here.
☐ Floating Text and Audio signals. Nothing more, nothing less.
☐ Average
☑ Good
☐ Lovely crafted. Love for detail is seen.
☐ Impressively Immersive. I AM THE HERO or VILLAIN!

---{Average Round Length}---
☐ Long enough for a cup of coffee (~5 Minutes)
☐ Short (7-8 Minutes)
☐ Average (10-15 Minutes)
☐ Long (16-30 Minutes)
☑ What is time to you? (31+ Minutes)
☐ To dust (1– 3 hours)

---{Average Game Time}---
☐ Too Short (1-2 hours)
☐ Quite Short (3-4 hours)
☐ Getting there (5-6 hours)
☑ Just fine (7-8 hours)
☐ Well done (9-10 hours)
☐ Don’t pressure me (11-20 hours)
☐ Holy F*ck there is so much to do (21+ hours)
☐ ROME WAS BUILD FASTER (35+ hours)

---{Bugs}---
☑ Never heard of any
☐ Minor bugs
☐ Can get annoying
☐ It’s a mystery why this game is running
☐ It doesn’t run
☐ (Only in MP) Very much exploitable

---{Price}---
☐ It’s free!
☑ Worth the price
☐ Worth but wait for a discount
☐ If u have some spare money left
☐ Not recommended
☐ You could also just burn your money or donate it to me

---{Replay value}---
☑ YES! ALWAYS!
☑ Campaign / Story around three times
☐ Two times is okay
☐ Just once
☐ Not even once
☐ OH GOD WHY DO I HAVE TO DO THIS

Summary: I am in love anew. Thanks for bringing this gem back. Yes this review is highly subjective by nostalgia, but even if you leave that aside, it’s a solid game with interesting story and mechanics. New people can also get in since you only need too resources and have a high variation of units for each aspect of the game.

Final verdict: Nostalgic wet dream. Would howl again (9/10)

Game: Nostale

State of the Game: Old as f*ck

Disclaimer: The opinion in this post is highly personal, thus subjective. I always recommend checking the game for yourself, watching gameplay videos of it and the likes.

While playing: I had a lot of fun playing this game, mostly due to playing with friends and a strong feeling of nostalgia.

Plot: Ingame Politics are in Chaos. This is the work of demons, monsters, and who knows what. In the end, you tend to skip the textboxes... much.... like every time.

Character dept: Nothing. Bland. You should feel anything for them. You don't.

Dialogue: It's an MMO so no real dialogue for you.

Gameplay: Is quite linear. You can do some side missions, work yourself off for meager gold, start trading or stuff like that. Money is a leading factor in this game (real and unreal alike).

Genre: Anime-ish top-down MMORPG with a twist on classes through the specialist cards.
Competition: Too many to count...

Summary: Characters moan a lot. People who pay nearly always have better equipment than you, which you can only win over if you spend ALL your time in it. Class / Elemental change through the sps is a good invention.

Final verdict: I'm an old school magician. (4/10)

Game: They are Billions

Version as of the time writing: V1.0.19 64bit

State of the Game: Fully Released. Receiving DLC and Updates

Disclaimer: The opinion in this post is highly personal, thus subjective. I always recommend checking the game for yourself, watching gameplay videos of it, and the likes.

While playing: I am in a love-hate relationship with this game. It makes incredibly much fun but f*cks me over at every chance it gets. Is one wall too thin? Dead. Having built to far away? Dead. Making noise? OH BOY YOU ARE DEAD!

Plot: Zombie Apokalypse. You are the mayor. Start building... fast!

Character Depth: I haven't played the newly added campaign, but even tho there are no real main characters, the units you can build all got their own kind of personality. Something you might not expect out of a (survival-)strategy game.

Dialogue: The dialogue I'm referring too here is the noises and talks of the units while commanding them. It's good. It feels good. you are your own little emperor/empress.

Gameplay: Is repetitive, but still fun. You can choose your map, mutators, and thus the difficulty you wanna play. Basically you learn how to play and progress through the game by making it harder for yourself. Still, it depends on some factors of randomness and the AI, which sends huge waves of zombies your way. Mostly aiming for weak points. Have fun.

Genre: I would categorize it under roguelike (survival-)strategy game.

Competition: While there are many different strategy games out there, this game is a one of a kind experience.

Art Style: Charming Steampunk

---{Animations and Effects}---
☐ So beautiful and realistic
☑ Great
☐ Decent
☐ Have seen better
☐ Kinda laggy, unpolished, or a plain hindrance
☐ No animations or effects would have done a better job

Notes: Everything is fluent, not laggy, even when a bazillion zombies are on your screen. Everything feels responsive and kinda realistically (or at least how I would picture a steampunk world)

---{Audio}---
☐ Better than reality / Made me dance
☑ Very good / I want to hear more
☐ Good / accompanies the environment and action well
☐ Decent. Didn’t kill me but could have been better
☐ Bad
☐ I died. Autistic screeching = game sound.

Notes: I enjoy the music, the ambient sounds, the explosions, and the dying of units. I like the sound of the zombies and everything about the game, audio-wise.

---{Difficulity}---
☐ 1-Click-Pony
☐ Easy
☐ Medium (have to use your brain)
☐ Hard (difficult to master)
☐ Really Hard
☑ Dark Souls (get gud)

Notes: You will die. A. LOT! Guides often don't help as much, as the experience, you gather while playing.

☐ Nothing to grind
☐ Leaderboards / Achievement hunters / Ranklords
☑ Average grind level
☐ Too much grind
☐ Use all of your spare time

Notes: This might change, as soon as I get the chance to play the campaign.

☐ Average (10-15 Minutes)
☑ Long (16-30 Minutes)

Notes: My sanity won't let me play longer than three hours.

---{Bugs}---
☑ Never heard of any
☐ Minor bugs

☐ It’s a mystery why this game is running
☐ It doesn’t run
☐ (Only in MP) Very much exploitable

Summary: Incredibly fun game, with not so many weak points. Basically you play, you fail, you learn, you start over. For some, it might be offputting, but I liked the experience.

Final verdict: Would die again (8/10)

Game: Battle Chasers Nightwar
Version as of time writing: v.24037

State of the Game: Seems Released. Was part of Steam Greenlight.

Disclaimer: The opinion in this post is highly personal, thus subjective. I always recommend checking the game for yourself, watching gameplay videos of it and the likes.

While playing: The game was fun to play, but limited to the animation speeds and battle system.

Plot: There is a story, which i can't really recall. That must tell you everything you need to know. Something about a witch you have to find, some crazy village or something...

Dialogue: Dialogue between the characters exists purely to push the story. It's not really deep, as far as I feel.

Gameplay: Its a round-based RPG where you pretty much annihilate the enemies, as soon as you over level them, or apply thoughtful tactics. The equipment you can craft won't be necessary for the late game. So basically you run around a dungeon your own way, to find items, enemies, and everything. Then you run around the map. Rinse and repeat. Can be fun, but gets monotonous really fast.

Genre: Turn/Round-based RPG

Competition: Final Fantasy... maybe? Darkest Dungeon , Persona 4 Golden?, Griftlands

---{Graphics}---
☐ Beautiful
☐ Good
☑ Decent
☐ Bad
☐ Pixelparty

Art Style: The Textures are clean and comic-ish. Worldmap looks like a match of hand-drawn and pop-up paper.

---{Animations and Effects}---
☐ So beautiful and realistic
☐ Great
☑ Decent
☐ Have seen better
☐ Kinda laggy, unpolished or a plain hindrance
☐ No animations or effects would have done a better job

Notes: A feature I really liked, is the tiny details on each character! The skin of them also changes when you equip a new weapon or on some other items. A feature I miss in most other games, but grants this game a +1 to the final verdict!

---{Audio}---
☐ Better than reality / Made me dance
☐ Very good / I want to hear more
☐ Good / accompanies the environment and action well
☑ Decent. Didn’t kill me but could have been better
☐ Bad
☐ I died. Autistic screeching = game sound.

☐ 1-Click-Pony
☑ Easy
☐ Medium (have to use your brain)
☐ Hard (difficult to master)

Notes: It's not hard to get good in this game and/or power through.

---{Gameplay Loop / Grind}---
☐ Nothing to grind
☐ Leaderboards / Achievement hunters / Ranklords
☐ Average grind level
☑ Too much grind
☐ Use all of your spare time
☐ Give up on Job, Family, Friends, Pets, Kids and Future

☐ Floating Text and Audio signals. Nothing more, nothing less.
☑ Average
☐ Good
☐ Lovely crafted. Love for detail is seen.
☐ Impressively Immersive. I AM THE HERO or VILLAIN!

Notes: Story is there. It's just nothing very memorizable.

---{Average Round Length}---
☐ Long enough for a cup of coffee (~5 Minutes)
☐ Short (7-8 Minutes)
☑ Average (10-15 Minutes)
☐ Long (16-30 Minutes)
☐ What is time to you? (31+ Minutes)

☐ It doesn’t run
☐ (Only in MP) Very much exploitable

---{Price}---
☐ It’s free!
☐ Worth the price
☐ Worth but wait for a discount
☑ If u have some spare money left
☐ Not recommended
☐ You could also just burn your money or donate it to me

---{Replay value}---
☐ YES! ALWAYS!
☐ Campaign / Story around three times
☐ Two times is okay
☑ Just once
☐ Not even once
☐ OH GOD WHY DO I HAVE TO DO THIS

Summary: All in all it is a good game, which could also be played on a tablet or smartphone, for what its worth. You can put some time into it and get a fun experience, but it seems lacking in points of uniqueness and building a connection to the player. If you are into round-based combat and are looking for a simple RPG to kill time with, look no further.

Final verdict: AFK Arena the RPG (6/10)
