An uncompromising and chilling depiction of the great war. A love letter to Resident Evil 4 in many ways, Conscript manages to carve its own unique identity while building on old classics that just work.

Some constructive criticism; the back-tracking can be somewhat exhausting at times, notably in chapters 5 & 4. This is something that becomes more apparent after finishing chapter 6, the last chapter in the game, where the game & level design really shines. Smart item placement and shortcuts make back-tracking feel needed and interesting, rather than a chore. Tiring back-tracking is somewhat exaggerated by the extremely limited item slots in the earlier chapters; do NOT get me wrong, I love inventory management and it is a crucial aspect of the survival-horror genre, but I found it extra difficult to keep my inventory a little open as to avoid backtracking to storage in this game. This is in part due to the fact that every item takes up the same sized slot, making the inventory "management" aspect of the survival experience a little hollow. This is what primarily led me to skip burning bodies all throughout chapters 1-4, because having 2 slots taken up by the lighter and the fuel was too punishing; simply choosing to outrun the rats was not a difficult task and somewhat nullified that mechanic. There is apparently a big with the "cowardice" gauge throughout the game, which leads to players (including myself) getting the coward ending even when they went out of their way to face and eliminate every single encounter (I wonder if running away from the rats builds up that gauge..).

All in all, what a fantastic indie experience. I'm a pretty thorough player, and my first playthrough landed at about 12 hours; I would personally pay far more than $19.
