Best 2D platformer I've ever played. Punishingly hard but fair (difficulty is actually fully customisable using "assist mode" if you're not a masochist like me). The narrative is pretty inspiring too.

Good open world platformer/exploration game. In terms of gameplay and atmosphere it's good but the constant cynical 4th wall breaking interjections by the creator leave a sour taste.

An excellent game that does not fully live up to its potential.

Let's start with the good: This is a very addictive and hard metroidvania game. The combat is nice. The enemy design is good. The upgrades are amazing. The feeling of exploration is great. The bosses are perfect. As for the general feel, it nails it, with a breathtaking soundtrack, wonderful animation and moody atmosphere.

So why did it say it does not fully live up to its potential? Well, I've got some gripes. The plot is pretty much non-existent. There are a few things that happen but nothing is really explained in a concrete manner. Once the initial impression wears off, it starts to feel "game-y" and "arcade-y". You stop feeling like the hero of your own story and you begin to only think in terms of mechanics. Most of the upgrades don't have much plot or lore significance, they're just scattered for you to find at the end of some platforming challenge or boss fight.

Don't get me wrong, I still had a great time with Hollow Knight and I wholeheartedly recommend it. It's just not the immersive, story-driven experience that I expected.

A nice puzzle game with an interesting central mechanic and well-designed riddles around it. The philosophical elements are a bit overstated by other reviewers, in reality they stay in the background for the most part.

A very strong stealth game. Each situation presents itself to you as a puzzle. There are multiple ways to approach and succeeding at what you set out to do is satisfying. The scoring system allows you to set your own difficulty.

A great experience but a flawed game.

Alien: Isolation is a love letter to the first Alien films. The commitment to verisimilitude is incredible. Every aspect of the game works to make you feel like you really are onboard that real space station with a real alien creature hunting you. The tension is constant, the atmosphere is so thick you can cut it with a knife. The problems that keep happening have this realistic vibe about them and the solutions too. It feels like you're really an engineer and you know how these ships work and you really are performing the tasks you are supposed to as an engineer would under these horrifying conditions trying to beat impossible odds.

However, the gameplay is just bad. It consists of equal parts 1. horrible stealth sections running from a creature with a rubberband mechanic that makes it always be on your tail and 2. extremely boring mini-games, fetch quests, quick time events and so on. The plot is thin and uninteresting and it overstays its welcome.

But somehow it all works as a whole. It reminds me of SOMA in some ways. The gameplay is sub-par but the whole thing works. Even the boring parts like meddling with consoles and pressing buttons and cutting panels add to the tension and sense of place.

Overall, it's worthwhile. Flawed, but worth playing through once.

PS: I recommend playing on hard difficulty, it's not scary otherwise. You're playing a horror game to be scared, right? Also, a piece of advice: when you see the alien, don't wait hidden in one place; instead avoid him and keep moving.

It slowly but surely drives the point home. Brutally effective in capturing the oppressive atmosphere of war as experienced by civilians.

After playing for a while, I thought it wouldn't affect me much... but then it happened. My survivors heard on the radio that a peacekeeping mission was coming to end the war. I would count the days, hoping each one to be the last. I was running out of supplies and places to scavange, growing more careless every night. One night, my scavanger was shot, I was out of bandages and she spent the day in bed begging for someone to dress her wounds. That following night, the replacement scavanger was shot by a sniper, he died instantly. The war ended the next day.

It's a great puzzle game, but only if you let it into your heart.

This is a puzzle game that, unlike many others nowadays, will not hold your hand or gently push you to the right direction. When you reach a puzzle for the first time, chances are you won't understand it. You'll have to look around for other puzzles that will teach you the principles, symbols, mechanics and thinking that are required. Through your own effort, little by little you'll start to make sense of the language the puzzles are presented in and then more and more puzzles will start making sense.

After a puzzle's goal makes sense, then you can sit down and solve it. Most can be finished in a matter of seconds with a combination of deductive skills and trial and error. Some require more time, maybe even a piece of paper and a pencil to visualise your thoughts.

Gameplay aside, the visuals are marvelous, it's like stepping inside a painting. The payoff in terms of narrative sometimes feels underwhelming but, rest assured, it's all part of the experience. You might not agree with the lesson the game is trying to teach you, but you have to respect the dedication and craftsmanship that went into delivering it.

Best a sequel can be. Expands on the original without being repetitive. Vastly superior presentation. Equally good writing and story. The custom test chambers offer near infinite replayability with relatively good quality controls.

Probably the best horror game I've ever played. The visual and audio work alone is extremely successful in eliciting a visceral sense of fear and unease, it's unlike anything I've felt before from a videogame. The actual gameplay of "hide and run" is a bit tired at this point but improved compared to Frictional's previous games. The main plot and setting revolve around transhumanism and are quite satisfying, if a bit straightforward. There is also a layer of mystery, what with all the audio logs and the crime scenes. The game lets you decipher the events that transpired and solve these mysteries yourself without any hand-holding or clear answers.
