It's not review-writing time...it's escaping time!

I adored this game so much...the characters are engaging, the story is enjoyable with light-hearted humour shining through what would normally be seen as very dark and grim plot themes, the art style is very charming and whimsical, and the puzzles are for the most part very intuitive--with a couple of challenging ones included, requiring some out-of-the-box thinking at times.

Pro:

+ Wonderful art style and character designs.
+ Well-written story, with Grimm-brothers-fairy-tale inspired themes and tropes, but with a modern spin on elements.
+ Great voice-acting and dialogue for the main characters which I feel lends a lot to the feel of the game, but there are a few instances where some characters' voice acting is a bit disappointingly flat.
+ Many user-friendly features, like an interaction-spot viewing key, ability to skip certain puzzles, hidden-object achievements, etc.

Neutral:

+/- Somewhat dark themes, including things like child endangerment, imprisonment/dungeons/death, themes of revenge, etc. It looks at first-glance like a very child-friendly game, but I'd think this is best played by teens/adults who can appreciate the darker tones and contrasting lighter moments.
+/- I found the musical score to be very well-done, but depending on how fast one personally can complete the puzzles, I'd wager the option to turn down the music might be something to consider. :p

Con:

- While I found most all of the puzzles rather straightforward (requiring at most some observation, trial-and-error use of the main character's abilities on all visible objects, and some imaginitive combinations of items) there were a couple which did stump me for quite a while. Spoilers: The first was a musical puzzle, which showed notes on a staff given as a hint. The problem I had was that although I have some knowledge of musical notation, it was rendered in a non-standard 4-line presentation instead of a typical 5-line format. Also, the hint was given in a location away from where one actually plays the notes, so the player actually has to write/copy the notes in order to play them later. Although the author allows one to skip this puzzle, I think it's a bit unfair to have a puzzle which requires knowledge beyond the game itself to complete properly. The second requires the player to obtain an item 'cut' from another larger item--that component part which then resembles a third item requested by one of the characters. LOL that was a little too much out-of-the-box-thinking for me, and I could only solve it through (a lot of) trial-and-error. :p
- The ending (i.e. the resolution of the over-arching original quest set out by the protagonist) does seem a bit rushed, as expressed in some of the other reviews here. However, if one considers the last chapter leading to it to be part of the ending, it does tie in well with the themes and gives a satisfying sense of closure, IMHO.
- The plight of the main antagonist is another thing which seems to get negative reviews here--for those few reviews that are negative--but I think it's simply because she is purposefully portrayed in such a sympathetic light, complete with her own backstory. Ultimately though, as the audience, we must acknowledge that her choices are her own doing and fate only plays a part in her life. Either way, I did nominate her for the "Villain in Most Need of a Hug" Steam award! ^^

Overall, I can't recommend this game enough, if you enjoy this type of point-and-click adventure--it's a game I look back on fondly.
