Audacity. It's free software. It'll do what you need it to do. As for keeping your throat in one piece, try to aim for voices that don't wreck it in the first place. And if you must experiment a little, give yourself frequent breaks to drink water, and if you have it, hot chamomile tea with honey. Know what puts strain on your voice in the beginning and don't overdo it.

But you'll need a good mic. Look up 'voice acting microphones' and see what's there. I started with a Samson C01u condenser USB microphone. That should be pretty low in price.

Me and my team are currently working on a project that we call "The Amber Rim" - the very VERY basic description is that it is an in-depth series about four misfits (or bounty hunters, as they usually get money) trying to survive by all means in post-MvM Badlands - the scorched no man's land, turned into the state-wide frontline against robots. It comes with the heavy emphasis on the realism of the plot and character development. And for that, we'd need a good Engineer voice actor for such a task.
