Game is just boring and bland in all aspects from the story to the gameplay.
Why am I out shooting hundreds of people and this dude wants to bring his daughter on my ship? Even with that it could very well be an interesting plot point or a point on contention. Make her ask questions of what it's like out there as she stays on the ship. Your dad comes back to the ship covered in blood after pacifying an outpost of bandits. Sounds traumatic to me. I steal one thing too and the world is ending for my companions after they walk blood soaked out of an outpost being the space vigilantes we are. They are just so boring and two dimensional.

The factions in the game are just as bad. I am writing this after not having played in a bit and I can barely even remember them. There was a war I think? Then they made some sort of peace? Where is the plotlines that you subtly discover or play a direct part in of what they are doing now besides just existing as a backdrop. Maybe they are there, I wouldn't know because what I was presented was so awfully boring. I had no desire to seek any deeper plotlines.
Even the ones that have a interesting missions such as the pirates are just so hilariously comic book evil it's funny. Their quest line was genuinely the most interesting one in the game with cool missions, but the characters involved in it were so flat I never finished it.

I will slog through the dull planets, bad mechanics, bad graphics, and horrible optimization if the story is compelling, but it wasn't. The game felt like it was chasing a T rating while also including things in it that would easily get it rated M. The Star Wars prequels have more in depth character writing and they have red and blue swords telling you who the good and bad guys are. If you're going to write an adult storyline about humanity but in space make it seem like humanity and not a bunch of aliens imitating what they think humanity is. That might just be my headcannon for the story to make it not so terrible of a memory; humanity is dead and everyone in the game is a bunch of alien parasites who kill a civilization and then take the place of them acting out their culture from gathered records and the only actual human is you making their behavior and society seem so odd. Hell that's not even a terrible plotline and I made it up in the ten minutes writing this which seems to be longer then the writing team took on this game.

Early Access Review
I finally got a good run going after 60 hours. Got late into the game killing things with my mind and a sword wielding bird masked man as my faithful companion. Ran into a robot I hadn't seen before who then proceeded to separate all of my limbs from my body and I forgot to use my time manipulation powers before the fight so I couldn't undue it. Seeing no hope I took over the mind of the faithful companion and checked his stat line and saw he was incredibly powerful. With a tinge of regret I proceeded to finish off my original body making his body permanently mine. Grabbed the overpowered halberd off my original body and went on to dismember anyone I came across as revenge.

11/10 would betray my trusted companions again for selfish goals

But for real the game has a ton of complex systems that work interchangeably with one another making for a ton of character build options and interesting stories. On top of that the pixel graphics and intuitive UI make it very easy to get into compared to other faithful roguelikes I've played. They released an update upgrading the sound design that makes combat much more satisfying feeling too.

The music alone is well enough reason to play this. Certain songs evolve over the course of the story and it makes them hit that much harder.

The story hits you right in the feels, and it's not all spoon fed to you. It makes you interested in what's going on and eager to figure out more through various mechanics in the game.
Along with the smooth flowing combat the entire game sails right along.

If you are a returning player from the original the new ending makes it worth the purchase alone. Especially if you have played through the Drakengard series. The flower wins in the end.

Also red bag man da real mvp

Honestly, just flat out of one of the best game's I have played. I still think about the story and the game in general a year later. Very few games I can remember a year later much less name most of the characters. The writing in the game is just fantastic.

If you are remotely a fan of single player story games or just a fan of reading literature at all I would recommend this game.
