I have been playing it since pre-release and was more than excited for the full-game.
I am more than satisfied!

For people who enjoy single-player games.
This game is a masterpiece.
I am out of words to write a review because I can't describe how flawless it is.
Music / Art / Story / Weapons/ Crafting system / Upgrades / Boss fights and the entire concept is well executed. With the full release they implemented Puzzles as well which are enjoyable!

Oh. And I am Japanese so I might be biased??? I love Sushi. <3

But truly, this game is very fun for those of you who are into playing alone. It encompasses everything you'd look for in a single-player game.
My only sadness is that I know this game might end someday but it will be one of the masterpiece games I will always remember.

Hello! It has been a while since I have posted a review but this one is worth writing about.

I've been a fan of Supergiant games from the get-go because they never fail to disappoint.
Each game they have come out with has a different gameplay / thus caters to different styles of gamers. But as far as I have seen, they always deliver a flawless product. A huge fan of "Bastion" and "Transistor" -- "Hades" is amazing.. but again, it depends if this is your type of game.

With that said, my comments on Hades:

- Story! <3 Based on Greek Mythology. You play one of the sons of Hades (Zagreus) who wants to get out of "Hell". You defy your father and try to leave it even if he tells you it is impossible. Along the line of your escape from "Hell" for reasons which I shall not spoil, you get to encounter other Greek mythological Gods and creatures.. who help you along the way or not.. so if you're into the mythology, that is a very big bonus.

- Game-play! <3 It is rogue-like. You clear a room of mobs, you go to the next room. ;) Along the way, random different Gods and Goddesses give you an upgrade out of 3 choices.
The choice you make will customize your gameplay and what you can do throughout that run which makes it a unique experience every time. However, be prepared to die. You *will* "die" over and over and over and get sent back to Hell - But, the kicker is that you can upgrade your skills based on what you have done on each run after you "died". That idea is philosophical to me - like in life; we make mistakes, but are rewarded by learning from them and come back better / stronger and try again. Perseverance! ;)
! We can upgrade our character in several ways by unlocking new weapons or changing specific beneficial traits on ourselves or on the weapons over time as we collect gems and so on.

- Personal Experience! <3
* Visuals - It is beautiful - there are so many intricate artistic details that I notice every time. Breathless!
* Sounds - The soundtrack by Darren Korb is always impressively done. The soundtrack is worth it. The voice actors are well-chosen, including Darren Korb himself as the main protagonist's voice (which I can not get enough of, sorry~ just so cool!).
* Performance - For my specs, this game runs smoothly in my rig. However, I am not sure but I personally recommend a Keyboard + Mouse combo because of the accurate aiming which is very important in this game rather than a gamepad - but that is up to the weapon and it is up to you.

~~~~All in all: The various weapon choices and weapon upgrades make it so much fun! I went from being frustrated at first from dying to compelled to keep on playing due to how endless and very interesting their upgrading system is.. and now.. I am completely addicted since I've grasped it and feel like a boss! Haha. There are so many things to unlock and so many combinations that *it always feels fresh*. I highly recommend it. I truthfully have nothing bad to say about this game and it is a BONUS if you love Greek mythology.
It is a masterpiece in my mind - but whether or not it is your thing is up to you!
My two cents and I hope it helps! <3
This game is fantastic.
It reminds me of games I used to play as a kid. The puzzles are HARD. It makes you stuck, hating yourself, and wanting to punch your monitor or delete the game altogether. Haha. It's sadistic but the puzzles are amazing for me.. I mean, who doesn't like a hard challenge? I've had friends at times help me through with their second set of eyes. I needed a WATSON! :D And it is so gratifying once we complete the puzzles together.
If you are looking for a purely detective-game a la L.A. Noire, this is not for you. This has a lot of Lara Croft elements to it. There are no hints as to how you are supposed to solve each puzzle-like-situation. You have to figure it out on your own. You will fail and die time and time again, each time learning something new, trying to get through the challenging-mental situation with a new insight. It is not friendly - there are no hints. You'll need a pen and paper like old-skool games. You'll need to research inside Holmes' library of books and yes actually read those books in-game. You'll have to look at an old map with fading ink and tiny fonts to figure out where to go next with limited hints.
The game gives you the option of skipping the puzzles or challenging situations - but if you do that, you will not enjoy the game for what it is supposed to be because that is 90% the point of it. You'll end up with a short-game and disillusioned as to why the story-line and dialogues are short and wonder what you spent your money on.
I only recommend this game for people who *ARE* into challenges and puzzles and don't mind failing over and over for the satisfaction of getting through it through perserverence, smarts, and patience eventually.
I needed to say this due to the bad press from people whom I've noticed "SKIPPED" all the puzzles. :p What a shame.
A masterpiece for all fans of classic point-and-click adventure games. The story was insightful despite a little horrific at times - but all in good taste. The puzzles were challenging. The soundtrack was amazing. The main character was easy to get attached to. I binge-played it until the end without sleep - that is how well-done and immersive it is!
If you are nostalgic as I am of classic and challenging story-based adventure-games, you won't be disappointed with this one. <3
The Journey Down: Chapter 2 is a *huge leap* from Chapter 1.
If you have played the first and are nostalgic of classic games such as Monkey Island, I would recommend this for you.
I smiled, giggled, and quite enjoyed it a lot! :)
The soundtrack is relaxing and amazing. The characters are just as charismatic as in Chapter 1 and the dialogue / story-line have an even greater sense of humour.
Additionally, this game's VOICE actors are talented - which makes the game much more immersive. They did an incredible job for you to relate to the characters even though they are quite simplistic visually; in a sense that their faces are all based on "African" or "Caribbean" wooden face masks but which were carefully chosen by design to portray their basic personality traits.
Needless to say, graphically, it's well-done. A mix of simple and complex imagery. The cut-scenes are breathtaking. The feel of the art-style is quite fitting with the entire story / mood.
The puzzles increase in difficulty as the game progresses... I got stuck maybe 2-3 times for a while but it was never frustrating - I persevered until I figured it out. Very much satisfying! :)
In summary: Underrated humorous point & click adventure. I recommend that you play Chapter 1 if interested, as there is a progression to the story (**even though I noticed that they made sure via the dialogues that you would not feel lost if you hadn't played Chapter 1, so maybe not necessary?**). The length of the game was satisfying as well, considering it took me so long to figure out the last puzzle. Ya' mon! :)
I'm looking forward to Chapter 3!
I'm not good at reviews, but I felt that I should write something because I loved this game and I love the people behind Supergiant. <3
Supergiant games did it again! ^_^
After having fallen in love with Bastion and Supergiant Games, I could not wait for their next release.
The only similarities between Bastion and Transistor, however, are.. obviously the art-style, the immersive narration and story, and yet again the amazing soundtrack. Woot woot, the same narrator from Bastion!
The difference: the combat system is not quite the same as Bastion's. It's not so much a hack & slash, as much as it is a *tactical* combat-system game. Ahh how to explain this..? It's quite unique.
There is a 'time-stop' system which allows you to literally -pause- to analyze and plan out your combat moves in advance. Each ability and number of steps you take around the "field" require a certain amount of 'energy' - so you are limited by an energy bar and its refresh system. Therefore, you have to be efficient in not only the abilities you choose, but your movements across the "combat field", etc. It's remniscent of other games to me that I had enjoyed very much.. so that was not an issue for me, personally! -- it was quite a delight. :)
What I especially enjoyed was the way that you can experiment with and mix up all the different abilities you pick through leveling up. Each combination results in something different, and you can only have 4 active ones in combat. You can literally mix 2-3 learned abilities together for one unique ability / result - so there are multiple possiblities. You also have passive ability-slots which you can use those ability cards for, as well, and they play a completely different role. There is quite a flexible customization system. :)
Also, if / everytime your HP goes to '0' in combat, you lose and are disabled from one of your 4 abilities; which you can only recover at a later time. :o Additionally, if you want to challenge yourself further, you are able to raise the difficulty by implementing an in-game system called "limiters" -- a very similar system to Bastion. The more limiters you use, the more rewards (more xp). Funfun!
All in all, I loved the game so much that I took my time with it and did not want to rush through it. I recommend that you don't either to enjoy the narration, soundtrack, and immersiveness for the total experience. Luckily, there is an option for a second playthrough so you can have the opportunity to level up some more and unlock abilities you had missed out on before and try different combinations! :)
Just finished Ep2. An absolute delight for fans of Adventure games or Telltale Games... or even more for fans of the Vertigo graphic novels it's based on, such as myself. Woo Fables!
I often hear people trying to compare it to Telltale's "The Walking Dead" Game series, which I've enjoyed as well, due to its similar gameplay of choice & consequence, and story-based nature. However.. so far, this game has less puzzles (only one so far in Ep2); is not as action-based, and is *entirely* story-focused.
I would recommend it to people who like grim adventure games with a 'violent noire'-detective atmosphere.
This one involves famous characters from various fables and stories from your youth.. who have gone bad! ô_ô
The main protagonist that you play is a human depictation of the Big Bad Wolf, who is the sheriff of "Fabletown".
His/ Your job is to protect the other fable characters from each other by resolving their issues and solving crimes.
The story, soundtrack, and voice acting are very well done, which makes it extremely immersive!
I also particularly like the graphic novel/comic book art-style that stays true to the books.
All in all, I can't wait for more! <3
Witty, charismatic, point-and-click adventure / puzzle AND -platformer- game that is story-based with an amazing soundtrack which fit the scenes and atmosphere perfectly. Unique, funny storyline with a lot of dark humour, and creative graphics! The entire world is made out of cardboard / paper. I enjoyed the strangeness of it all and found myself giggling many times. ;P I'd love to explain the premise, but I wouldn't know how to do so since it is so (pleasantly) bizzare! In summary.. you have many abilities; one of which is to read people's minds. Your main goal, thanks to being able to read their minds, is to help those in need with an 'extra' arm/hand that grew out of your head (weird, I know~!). In order to help them resolve their issues, you have to swing around on different platforms with that extra arm; pick objects up, and subsequently stick those new objects onto other places or onto people to solve puzzles. Weird? ..Absolutely! Fun? ..Definitely! Underrated? ..me thinks so. I highly recommended it if you're into a game that is deeply story-based, with humour and creative visuals. ..Orrrrr if you're suffering from nostalgia from those classic point-and-click adventure games like I am. Keep in mind, however, that it is ALSO a platformer! :) All in all, me likey!
Ingenious. Brilliant. Not many games have had me this immersed or never wanting to stop. This game had it all for me. Puzzles, adventure.. gorgeous graphics, story and atmospheric music.. all well put together. The two complaints I have read in general + my retorts on them are:
1) "We are only able to use a gamepad + we have to use it in a non-conventional way, since we have to move both brothers at the same time using each side of the gamepad."
***** Personally, I found this innovative and not hard to get used to. And actually FUN when used to it.
2) "The characters speak a made-up language - with no subtitles."
***** It bothered me in the first 15 mins too, but I understood further on that it was made this way on purpose. If not, I would had never picked up on the subtle details such as body-language, facial expression, tone of voice, making it an even more personal experience for me! :D
Either way, this game has made me smile and get all choked up so often... which is rare and was very unexpected. I highly recommend it for those of you who like a decent puzzler with a gorgeous immersive story in an equally beautiful setting. No regrets at all here. A staple art-piece in game format. :) Totally underrated. Thank you to my brother for recommending it.
