I was compelled to play this game after hearing so many conflicting opinions about it over the years and because I have a soft spot for the Duke having grown up playing Duke Nukem 3D. Was it worth it? Probably not.

Just about everything in the game feels straight up lazy or rushed out in the last year of development, with a few levels here and there that are actually fun and give a glimpse of what could have been. The shooting is at least competent, and they did a fairly decent job with the pace of the game by mixing things up with driving sections and some short puzzles here and there.

But.. the game is a mess, which I suppose should be obvious if you look at it's development timeline, and the only way I can safely recommend this game to anyone is if they have a lot of nostalgia for Duke Nukem like myself. Even then, your time is likely better spent elsewhere unless you are in the mood for a crusty shooter.

Duke deserved better.

What an experience. One of those rare game's that never feels like it overstays its welcome as it will constantly surprise you with some new and ridiculous event occurring within its oddball world. The music, while just as weird as the game itself at times, is phenomenal more so for it and I constantly found myself jamming out to the game's many battle themes. The gameplay is nothing revolutionary as far as RPG's go, but it works, and is kept interesting because of the 30 or so recruitable party members with skill sets unlike typical archetypes of the genre. But the main attraction here is definitely the story and world of LISA, which is best left as unspoiled as possible. Definite recommend, especially if you appreciate turn based RPG's.

Incredibly well done Metroidvania, if you're a fan of the 'genre' you will enjoy this. Tight controls and beautiful visuals are the highlight here. Enemies could have been more varied and it was a tad short but those are minor complaints when everything else is just so damn good.
