So, this is the last Dark Souls game I played through to completion; I started my first playthrough quite a while ago, but never got very far because both the clunkier controls and muddier visuals put me off, plus I heard a lot of people calling this the worst game in the series. However, after exhausting everything Dark Souls 3 had to offer, I still craved for more Dark Souls gameplay, so the black sheep in the series was my only option. So what did I think of it? I thought it was a lot better than people make it out to be.

Okay, it definitely has some legitimate flaws, like the controls being somewhat stiff, the hitboxes being massive trolls from time to time, and the enemy placement being a bit of a pain in certain areas, but I still got a lot of enjoyment out of it. The fire mechanic is right up my alley, I just adore being able to manipulate the levels in a meaningful way, and lighting up all the little torches just tickled my brain in a very delightful manner. I also am a big fan of being able to change the boss arenas a la Dragonrider, Lost Sinner and Fume Knight; it makes the stages feel like more of a puzzle you have to put together, and it carries a great sense of discovery with it, at least for me.

The story and world are definitely a downgrade compared to the other two Souls games, I have to admit, but I still found a lot of the characters likable. Okay, there were no real Solaires or Andres among them, but to be fair, those are some high bars to reach. Considering the mastermind Miyazaki wasn't working on this one, I think his lackeys did a fairly good job at putting together a competent game in its own right.

So, is it the worst in the series? Sure, it's really hard to argue against that. Is it still a good game? Absolutely. It does some things I like that the other games don't do, and even if its core mechanics are inferior to its siblings, they are still far superior to the mechanics of a lot of other high budget games in my experiences. So, take it for what it's worth. I enjoyed it and got a lot of playtime out of it, so I'm satisfied.

It's like football, but not a complete waste of time.

Honestly, I have no clue what this was all about. But I know I had 10 cups of coffee in the end.
