The Ford cologne V6 was built from the early 60s until 2011

It was built as the name suggests in germany and was built spefically for european fords in the beginning and later was used in all sorts of Fords. Originally started as a tiny 2L OHV V6

Alongside its british brother the essex V6 which was uses in mostly british models, the 2L with 85hp Found its way in the ford taunus, granada, sierra and the capri. It was the start of something great in the future. Thrn came the shortlived 1.8L. The bigger 2.3L had abt 110-130 and was used in the same cars like the 2.0. Both very oversquare engines with a big cylinder bore. Now came the bigger 2.6 making roughly the same power like the 2.3 but more torque. Onto the 70s there was a special performance RS version for the CAPRI 2600 RS with a increased stroke and very respectable 150hp and uses fuel injection instead of carbs. This was the beginning of the V6 Fords. Now it slowly will appear in the US market in US models with the newly updated 2.8. Due modernization purposes, it received a new engine block. Now being used in a wider variety of cars such as the Mustang II, The funny Pinto, Bronco and more. Reliability wise it was rather okayish. Injected and carbureted versions and made about 90 to 120hp in the US and 130 to over 160-170ish hp. Yeah more than the mustang II V8 with 140hp. Laughable.

It was even use in thr TVR 280i and reliant scimitar. Even special turbo V6 capris were made with over 180hp. Well, a small tragedy will happen later on as the british brother, the brit ford Essex V6 slowly seems to be phased out and sort of? replaced by the canadian essex with the same name but its main useage was in the US. The cologne V6 in the mid 80s has basically replaced the use of british cars. And the brit essex sadly met its fate. Replaced by its german brother. Well this is where the story continues. Out with the 2.8 which was a good engine AND IN WITH THE 2.9L IRON MACHINE IN THE MID 80S. Chain driven camshaft, improved engine head and valve design, mostly used with fuel injection, And a slowly appearing crowd whos begging to just throw on a turbo and let it rip on stock internals. But it was used in sedans, vans and such. And the EU capri was gone. The useage of trucks have been replaced by the bigger canadian Essex. Atleast it had still some useage in the Sierra. But the people know this engine mostly because of the ford scorpio 2.9 V6 with 145hp. Theyve become quite rare today but were very common around the 80s and 90s. Builds have existed of stock internals and boost pressure to the moon and also modified internals aswell. These iron engines really have potential and even if it was OHV. Abuse was handled well. And stock without modifications. It handles reliability. Displacement kits for both the 2.8 and 2.9 existed and could bring it over 3.5Ls. What I gotta say is. U n d e r r a t e d. Who's knocking on the door now?? Oh its cosworth. COSWORTH? Oh yeah, it was just for the scorpio cossie but they have cooked a DUAL OVERHEAD CAM 2.9. NO CENTRE CAMSHAFT. The engine was redesigned in csworth fashion. 190HP wasnt really a world record but ohoho. Some people knew this could be swapped in something. Some people turned it into race engines. Which makes sense. Power bumped in the 95 scorpio cosworth to 210hp.. sadly it didnt attract alot of customers due to the well... design of the 2nd gen scorpio.

Oh yeah uh... bad thing is.. it was only a 4 speed automatic and oh boy we know what happens with good engines with a slushbox 4 speed. It was sadly the peak of the cologne V6... The death tolls nonetheless... well not yet. In 1990 the 4.0 OHV which was for the US models. The OHV had a increased bore and stroke and well. 160hp was mainly the use of trucks and 1 van. It was okay. But now.. with the absence of the 2.9... the terrible misfortune. The 4.0 SOHC. Ending the cologne V6s journey with a disaster. 1997. The 4.0 SOHC was introduced. Again for US useages. Replacing the 4.0 OHV and also found its way in the early 2000s explorer and 2005-2011 mustang. 210hp wasnt the issue. Early models suffered from catastrophic camshaft and valvetrain failures with overheating and some other issues.. the reputation was ruined even after the issue has been resolved. The 4.0 SOHC after 2002-2003 was barely updated and ended its run... in 2011 and brought the iron Ford cologne into its grave.. after the 2.9 was replaced with more compacter engines in europe and the US which was first the vulcan in most applications and then the DOHC Duratec which replaced the cologne V6 in the EU entirely. The 4.0 SOHC met the same fate by being replaced By the vastly more powerful and advanced Ford cyclone V6 family... The beast made of cast iron... is no more.... the coffin has been sealed and the engines existence has been forgotten in the car community. The 4.0 SOHC is the most spoken about Version. But ofcourse negatively.

Theres one positive thing about the 4.0 SOHC though. In my eyes atleast. The supercharged use in the terlingua shelby with the performance package with 375hp. Atleast shelby made use of power increases. Some people possible also have done power mods to the SOHC.
