I have bought this game twice, once on release in the R* Games Launcher, and once in December 2022 in the steam store, why you ask? It is 1 of my favourite games, and I like to show off hours I put into games, I have accumilated 700+ hours in the R* Games Launcher version, and am planning to gain A LOT of hours in the steam version.

The Story:
Initially beginning your journey is difficult, Chapter 1 introduces you to a lot of the characters, it's all really well written, motion captured, but it feels slow, push through it, it is worth it ;-)

When chapter 2 starts, you are basically free to go wherever you please, but I recommend completing a couple of chapter 2 missions, some missions will unlock stores and items you definitely need (think about a horse brush or a fence to sell stolen items)

Some people tend to rush through the story, doing only main missions... DON'T
The story gets its strenght from exploring, doing a lot, if not all side missions. (good honor route)

Online:
it is difficult to start online aswell, there are 13 missions, completing all of them will grant you gold bars, which you need to unlock the Bounty Hunter Role (10 Goldbars).
This is also the only role that will reward you with gold upon completing a mission.
Gold bars are needed to unlock any of the other roles, which makes Online quite a grind to get started in.

Once you have unlocked 3 roles or so it actually gets more fun, by that time you will have a reasonably decent level, meaning you have unlocked ability cards.
If you've been smart with your money and bought cards that actually are beneficial, you will not be bullied by everyone you encounter.

Having 3 roles also means you can stop grinding 1 role at a time, and switch between them, done the collector route for the day? Do a bit of hunting for the trader... maybe you don't feel like hunting for the trader, do some bounty hunting to get your gold up, for that 4th role.

Online progress will snowball, giving you more and more to do as you progress.

TL:DR :
the game is worth buying for Story and Online,
Both have a slow start, Both are totally worth it late game.

Summing up this game real quick.

1. Absolutely toxic community

2. Psyonix never fixes bugs, rather spends their time making items, creating garbage for next seasons.

3. Heatseeker 2V2 is still a LTM (Limited Time Mode, Add the damn game modes to the extras fellas, that includes boomer ball etc etc.. it will attract more people to the game)
Which brings me to...

4. The game feels like its dying out, every season more smurfs go ♥♥♥♥ on low ranks, purely out of boredom.

5. This game requires lots of hours to become remotely good at it.

Overall I rate the game a 7/10.

If they would turn their heads to fixing actual ongoing bugs and attracting people, instead of worthless items (which you can't even trade if you buy them)
then I would consider altering this review.

( SPOILER FREE!! )
I have played Mafia 1 since 2003, I was only 6 years old at the time, it left a huge impact on me, I literally played it for years
Seeing this masterpiece of a game, it brought back so many good memories of me screwing around with mods, or doing the story for the 40th time.

They have altered the story here and there, but it definitely brought you more into the story.
The changes they made actually even make the veterans of the mafia series think twice.
The end of the story had me on the edge of my seat.

Conclusion:
This game is great! it may have some bugs but mafia 1 had plenty of bugs aswell.
You won't hear me complain.
Everyone thats considering buying this game. its worth every penny!

A heavily story driven game that sucks you in!

The story will last anywhere from 6 to 14 hours, if you're not speedrunning and just casually playing.

If you're done with the story go check out freeride ;-) it's got a couple missions in it that you can do. (similar to "Freeride Extreme" from mafia 1)

As quite a new player I have to say this:

The story drags you in, according to the internet the game had a lot of bugs (which have been fixed)

Playing as Henry is fun, you're a nobody, having to learn everything from scratch (can't even win a fist fight against a drunkard...)
Some quests have clear objectives but progressing further into the game the quests become a lot less clear, you have to find clues and actually use your brain.

if you buy this game, don't play it like any other game.. actually take a couple of hours to learn the mechanics, look up stuff on the internet if you need help. (prologue actually takes up to 2 hours if you look around and don't rush yourself into the objectives)

I am kinda late into this game, but definitely having a blast! I would recommend it to people looking for an amazing medieval game! 10/10

trying to get author medals in the solo campaign is tough, but fun.
The online experience is good aswell, racing against other drivers for the fastest times on all kind of tracks
