Very fun and satisfying game, though it's not very challenging for the most part.

I picked up this game because Beyond Good and Evil 2 was shown off at E3 2017 and I had never played the first one, even though the concept looks super rad. I wasn't sure what to expect when I booted up the game, but boy, I was in for some video-gamey fun.

The menus are and overall controls are a little weird, this being and early 00's game and PC ports haven't really been perfected (still hasn't been, mind you), but it doesn't take long to get used to it. I browsed the button mapping menu that shows up before the game boots, and there aren't many controls in the first place, anyway. The camera con go wild in-game sometimes, too.

There are also some bizzare visual glitches that happen when there are too many particle effects on the screen, I think. It's very jarring, but I've managed to look past them. There might be a fix somewhere, but I haven't read up on it.

The combat is alright. It's simple, to the point: you got your attack button and dodge button, hold attack to USE YOUR SUPER ATTACK, JADE! and such. It has a soft lock-on feature that can trip you up sometimes. Some mix-up comes into play with the various companions and their attacks which you can use in conjuction with Jade's, like Pey'j's rocket boot attack can be used to launch enemies and objects with your staff. It's interesting.

When you're not fighting, you're going around levels, solving puzzles and taking pictures. The camera is a big part of the game's function. It's the main source of money as you use it to take pictures of animals and get paid for them, in addition to a myriad of other things. Between levels you drive around a hovercraft that you can upgrade with a special currency, called Pearls, which you get from defeating bosses and finding secrets and such.

Perhaps the strongest point of the game is the cool setting and characters it has. You get really attached to them, which makes plot twists that happen all that more effective. I really like the way they handled the player character, Jade. Too often in a lot of story driven games, you start off with a long dump of exposition about the main character and their background and they usually become the most uninteresting part of the game. In Beyond Good and Evil, the first thing you do is pick up a flaming peice of wood and beat the snot out of alien monsters to save some orphans, and you find out bits and pieces about Jade's character later through the story. I wish more games nowadays would follow the "show, not tell" rule more.

Overall, I'd recommend this game. I got on sale, but it's probably also worth it at full price.
