I just couldn't get into it. While the puzzles are challenging, and do require actual thought, I hated the experience of playing it, so it doesn't really work for me as a game. Controls aren't great, either. Part of me feels like I'd like to come back for a challenge some day, but with the constant stream of new content, I doubt I will.

I'm having a blast with this game, despite the clearly mixed reactions. I think it's a delight. Flying around on Flammie in 3D for the first time is fantastic. I definitely have nostalgic feelings for this game, but I don't care; I am genuinely enjoying this.

This is a conditional recommendation:
1. Watch the trailer. If the art style turns you off, don't get it.
2. Watch a few gameplay videos on YouTube. If the gameplay doesn't appeal to you, don't get it.
3. The approach here is generally consistent with the approach Squeenix has taken with other Steam remakes/ports/re-releases. If that bothers you, buyer beware, but you should also already know what to expect.

Here are a few remarks on the issues people have described.

A. Remake Music - if this doesn't fit your tastes, you can turn easily toggle the music back to the original, in Options, during gameplay. I had no problem with the remake music.

B. Ring Menus - there are a few tips that may help you out with this, there have been a lot of people reporting problems.
- The X button brings up the ring menu for the character you are currently controlling.
- The Y button brings up the ring menu for one of your companions. If you press Y a second time, it switches to the other companion.
- There's been confusion about whose ring menu is selected. A great way to tell is the selection outline (four corners of a square) that indicates what object/action you have selected. The blue outline is Randi, the pink outline is Primm, and the green outline is Popoi. The outline color change is SUBTLE, and I wasn't aware of it, either, until I read about it online somewhere.
- Setting the LB and RB shortcuts may help with any ring menu trouble. Set one for Primm (likely cure water most of the time) and one for Popoi. You can then use these shortcuts as a quick way to access that character's other magic. For example, I press RB to bring up the cure water targeting, cancel with B, then select a different spell for Primm such as Ice Saber. With practice this becomes second nature and very efficient.
- If it is more convenient, you can use the D-Pad to toggle to control different characters, then press 'X' to bring up that character's ring menu directly.

C. Bugs - the only noticeable bug I have encountered is that 3 "graphically busy" enemies on screen at once can cause a momentary hiccup in gameplay. This has been reported by others. This has not been frequent in my experience, and while annoying, not a deal-breaker.

D. Resolution - you have to change the resolution before toggling it between Fullscreen / Windowed.

E. Crashing - this has been infrequent, but has happened at least once.

F. Low Poly Graphics - no fix/workaround here; I'm just saying, watch the trailer first to set your expectations.

My rig:
i5 6500 @3.20GHz
16GB RAM
GTX 1060 6 GB

This game works well with Steam Link, assuming you have a generally functioning network setup for Steam Link. Since it's top-view and not first person perspective, it's actually pretty ideal for Steam Link.

There are a lot of reactions to this game where it seems like they were expecting something different. I've found Kotaku and Polygon's reactions to be uninsightful and unnecessarily critical.

To start, the low-poly graphics were obvious from the get-go. If you bought this game expecting anything else, you have only yourself to blame. I have no problem with the graphics. Some people have described them as cartoony, but did you see the marketing for the original game? Or the original game itself? Have you seen a rabite? There has always been a cartoony vibe at play here. Did you expect a photo-realistic Randi slashing the entrails out of rabites with the Mana Sword? Did you expect Flammie to look like Smaug?

One reviewer also described this game as boring. But if this game is on your radar at all, you've likely been mashing the X button in drawn-out turn-based battles in Final Fantasy games for years. It seems hypocritical that the bar was set so high for this game, especially when we knew so much about it going in.

--End Rant Section--

Anyway. If you're anything like me, you'll love this game. If you have a strong negative reaction to any of the game's divisive elements, avoid it.

Simple, boring, unsatisfying, bundle filler. You'll regret wasting time with this.

Yes! This is the Chosen One.
This is what Might No. 9 should have been.
This is the TRUE successor to Mega Man X (!!), and I don't say that lightly.
You can check my profile, I usually hate everything.

The gameplay, graphics, art, presentation, general sci fi concepts, are all fine, and pretty good, especially given the time this came out. By those merits alone, this game is a bit of a modern classic.

However, being an exclusively single player game, it leans heavily on its writing and storytelling. The writing plays out like Brian the Dog heard of multiverse theory one day and immediately started writing depressing (yet surprisingly ultra violent) sci fi stories. There is this sense of dreary, self-loathing moralizing, which would be fine, if it actually went anywhere. The characters seem to have relatable elements on the surface but inevitably descend into a long-winded fallibility trap that is exhausting, aimless, stale, and unrewarding. None of the choices the player makes have any significant impact on the outcome.

The main game ending, while controversial, was not a dealbreaker; it actually seemed like it might be setting up the DLCs to resolve some of the self contradictions. Unfortunately, the DLCs play out so poorly, it actually ruins the whole experience leading up to them and it just makes the previous issues all the more ridiculous.

It doesn't sound like there will be any more Bioshock games, but hopefully Kevin will hire some writers for his next project.

If you haven't already picked this up, wait for deep discounts ($5 for the game and all DLCs).

I didn't get far in the story mode because of the endless, unskippable text dialog. There were some technical issues in the beginning, but these were resolved by rebooting once or twice.

Very repetitive. I don't feel like there's any replay value. Rooms all look the same. Difficulty level and permadeath only serve to highlight the lack of variety. I do however recommend Immortal Redneck.

Bottom line:
1- This should be free to play
2- This is a MOBA, not an RTS
3- The gameplay is not really anything new

I have some mixed feelings about this one. It was fun for an afternoon. The aesthetics are interesting. It's basically like Heroes of the Storm with robots, multi-unit control, and bad collision detection. The ability to customize every rig makes it hard to size up your competition at a glance. If you've played League of Legends and Heroes of the Storm, you've basically already seen the same abilities (with some of them being tremendously annoying). Because of these abilities, rewards for completing matches don't really feel rewarding or compelling.

I find marketing this as an RTS to be misleading. Controlling 3 units does not make an RTS. But the main problem here is that the core game basically already exists in other F2P games; why wait for the devs to suss out the balance issues and lower the price, when there is so little in the way of original gameplay?

The cooperative mode (campaign) is excellent, this is the main game mode, it is very fun to play, and you can get a lot of hours out of it. The competitive mode has some fun moments, but the competitive community is trash, so it's unfortunately quite likely they will ruin this for you a few hours in. Just block the griefers and move on.

If I had one gripe, I'd say this. In many situations, your most effective play is to just follow the leader. This can become tedious, and if you stray, one bad encounter with a special infected spells doom. There's not much they can do about this, given the format of the game, but you will from time-to-time get bored, get singled out, and die for stupid reasons.

Picked this up on sale for 3.99, the value is definitely there, so if it is on sale, pick it up.

The core mechanics are broken without overpriced (even on sale) DLC, the AI cheats, the difficulty is unbalanced, the learning curve is punishing, and the devs are arrogant. It's also miles behind any modern Total War game, and therefore obsolete. It's not even worth it during a sale. Save yourself the hassle.

Also, I've never bought a pairadix game since this one and I've never regretted it.
