This is more of a neutral review. I have very mixed feelings on this game. That said, I ultimately don't recommend this game for most people.

Hashihime of the Old Book Town is definitely a unique experience, and unlike most BL games I have played. It left me exasperated and desperately wanting to have a book club discussion about it. The writer(s) of this game made Choices and committed to them.

For transparency, I have read the first two routes (Minakami and Kawase) and will not be continuing further. I had a save file problem and took it as a sign to call it quits.

I won't go into the structure of the game or basics of the plot, as plenty of other reviews have done that. Here are my main.. grievances?? Observations? Notes?

-This story is long winded. I believe significant cuts would have benefited the story and allowed for better emotional beats.

-These characters are unlikable. I am generally a fan of unlikable characters, but some of them, especially our protagonist, skirt the line into being insufferable. I honestly believe that this is by design, but it IS exasperated by the length of the story. I find him and his unhealthy relationships with his friends to be incredibly fascinating, and exhausting. I truly believe that this is the strongest aspect of the game's writing. It was not at all what I expected out of this game, nor what I would typically expect of a game in this genre.

-These characters don't really have chemistry as far a romantic relationships go. While reading, I couldn't help but feel like the only reason these characters are even having sex is because it is a BL game and therefore expected. These moments do their best to capitalize on the unhealthy relationships the characters already have, but ultimately leave me laughing at the absurdity of it.

I could talk about this game for hours, and I do not think that is objectively bad. Clearly it did something right if I feel such a strong desire to discuss it, and refuse to call this a bad game. If you are looking for something different you may like this - clearly a lot of people do.

I wish Sega would release a new Project Diva instead of continuously re-releasing Future Tone but my weeb ass is gonna keep buying it every time it comes out on a new platform anyway. No Miku No Life

Extremely cute, yet heart crushingly devastating. I originally bought Hatoful Boyfriend a few years back and completely fell in love with it. I wasn't expecting anything more than a joke game that would be good for a few laughs but, Hatoful Boyfriend is so much more than that. A lot of love was put into this game, and the video on the store page doesn't do it justice.

Hopefully we will see the sequel released on Steam in the future!
