i could sit here for days and write thousands of words about this game, or i could just say this:

this is probably the best game ever made, and i dont think it has many competitors.

avoid spoilers, go in blind, and enjoy the experience. must play before you die. 11/10

I have over 2500 combined hours across Destiny and its sequel, let that determine whether you trust my opinion.

UPDATE DEC 2020:

Following the release of the latest expansion, Destiny 2 is a much better game for both new players and veterans.

The cleanup of the entry experience is great, reusing the original Destiny 1 opening (5 or so missions) in a new inventive manner to introduce players to the universe. This was a great change.

The removal of unnecessary/filler content has made the core playlists much more tolerable and streamlined. The new expansion had plenty to offer in terms of story and gameplay content, but is admittedly VERY lacking in terms of new loot. This however is amplified by the "sunsetting" of a large amount of older loot. As the game progresses over the next couple seasons, I can see this issue being resolved.

Bungie has slightly changed the engine behind the scenes which has changed some of the more underappreciated aspects of the game; the lighting being one of them which is now hugely improved. This has also allowed them to update the game far more frequently, resulting in more hotfixes, buffs, nerfs and minor changes. This is a massive improvement from the "once every few months" deal that we used to get. Fantastic change.

There is one key issue with the game currently in that to get ALL available content you must pay a fairly extortionate amount including 3 expansions and the current season - not enticing for new players who want to check out the full product. I would recommend trying the free version, then maybe picking up Beyond Light (the latest of the expansions) and the current season to play the newer content. I would leave the older content unless you REALLY want it, it just feels like too much money to spend at once for a newer player.

Other than that, a great game and a great experience - especially with friends. Destiny's raids remain the best experience in gaming in my opinion and in many others too. Worth it for those alone.


UPDATE JULY 2020:

Now in July 2020, Bungie has revealed their roadmap for the next 3 years of major expansions. The game has had a very slow year, with some bumps in the road in terms of content. So I took a 2 season break. Having jumped back in now in preparation for the September expansion (Beyond Light), I thought it best to update my review.

Bungie is taking away some of the less played content in Destiny to make room for future content and for remastered Destiny 1 content. Bungie have recently introduced "seasonal mods" which allow for much further depth in character builds, this is a great feature and allows for way more customisation. Bungie is also streamlining the way content releases moving forward, and is introducing some exciting new features such as Crossplay, Transmog, a new damage/element type & new subclasses.

Again, worth jumping in as this game is looking to continue being supported for years to come. This September is a great chance to start with the new expansion.

OCT 2019:

This game started off, well, not great. But over the past two years, it has made tremendous leaps forward.

Bungie have split with Activision and now handle this game alone. They have made steps in the best direction for the game, including making over $100 worth of content free to all players, and made the way new content is released more consumer friendly.

The majority of the community is helpful, charitable and friendly.

The endgame PvE experience is far and away some of the most fun i have ever had in gaming; either with friends or with players found through an LFG system, Raids are an incredible experience.

Admittedly some things are experienced better having played the first game, with certain callbacks and references actually meaning something. However, Bungie does a great job separating the 2 games so they could be played independently.

a game that was classed as dead on release due to its awful state, was given some hope last year with a major update that fixed alot of issues; and now has another major update that solved many more. fun game, can easily lose track of time, just chill and enjoy what it has to offer. would recommend now, something i never would've said at launch
