In LUFTRAUSERS, skill matters just as much as style. You are rewarded for playing well to the aircraft's strengths with large combos and/or survivability, but the game is not reluctant in the least to punish careless mistakes and exploit the plane's weaknesses from both above and below. The player is given plentiful options to craft their most favorable flight/combat experience, yet they must always be prepared to suffer the cons of their choices; frankly, the balances between Pro and Con in this game are commendable and always clearly stated.

The combat itself starts out quite simple with a few basic enemies to work with that are vulnerable to virtually any style. This acts as a sort of grace period for pilots testing new combinations. However, the game quickly works itself into a pilot's nightmare full of stray bullets, introducing new enemies in both sea and air. This steep difficulty curve, in combination with the mission system and various 'bosses', contributes greatly to the addictiveness of the game. New high scores give you a genuine sense of accomplishment and encourage the pilot to pursue other combinations that may help them reach even higher. All in all, LUFTRAUSERS is one tough survival test that will keep you coming back for more.
