I am simply in love with this game.

At first i didnt look at it well and just threw it aside not thinking much about it, but when i noticed Lucas Pope was behind it, i had to take another look, Lucas being the creator of Papers please, one of my favorite games of all time, and when i finally played Obra Dinn, Lucas had done it again, The Return of the Obra Dinn also quickly became one of my favorite games of all time, and it has a reserved spot in my heart, and it shows that even with a simple gameplay loop, a well made game with passion can do wonders.

The story kept pulling me in, more and more i wanted to fully understand what happened, even when i was not playing the game i started theorizing in my head what happened to certain crewmates and what their fates were, Obra Dinn is a game that makes you fight yourself, the games makes you think and tests your deduction skills, when you finally put the pieces toguether of an event it really makes you feel something.

To top it off the game has an amazing soudtrack, and even with the graphics only being in 1-bit the scenes just simply look gorgeous, some times i just spent minutes looking at the sea instead of doing the work i was supposed to do in the game.

This game is almost an art form, and i really recommend everyone to experience it at least once in their lives, i was pretty vague with the gameplay because i believe Obra Dinn is a game that you should go in without knowing much, its a one time experience, once you finish it you will never feel it the same way again.

Go play it, 10/10 i am completely biased and i dont care.

As a veteran of the first receiver, it was hard to accept all the changes its follow up has.

A lot of the charm receiver had was about its simplicity in looks, receiver 2 traded a lot of that for a whole new atmosphere, this game really feels unsettling, in a good way!. You know that the only thing that can really kill you are the kill-drones and yourself , but its if something is always watching you, creaks and industrial sounds on top of the awesome soundtrack composed by Anton Riehl. (I kinda prefer the original version of the "Slow Mindkill" track of the first game, but the new re-imagination of the track with Adaptive Music is simply amazing.) gives a very impressive atmosphere, always makes you think that the threat is actually watching you.

I have seen a lot of people confused with some mechanics and systems, one thing i would like to put in here is that the game explains everything as part of floppy disks and the tapes itself. Take a while to read, as a receiver would say, only with practice and information you will be able to survive the mindkill.

The new "leveling" system is interesting in a way, it goes against the original game in the sense that you need to collect all the tapes in one run and the drone placement and the type of these certain drones are totally random. In receiver 2 there are "levels" of receiving, dont get this wrong, the whole game is still rng based and random (apart from the tutorial) but now its devided in a way like "save states", once you collect a certain ammount of tapes you will advance in your receiving skills, and to truly awake you need to surpass many receiving levels, with each level, you start to see different weapons and new types of turrets, as an example, you start the game with a different kinds of revolvers, and the only kill drones you will meet are going to be the ground turrets, after you advance 2 levels in your receiver skills, you will start to see semi-automatic pistols and some taser flying drones, (like in the original game). The game even expands on the drone types, and after some levels, theres always a new deadly surprise waiting for you to meet. Everytime you die you will lose a level. At first i was in doubt about this mechanic, but i came to like it, its a way that you will end up finding many more tapes and really makes you want to push foward. Although the game still honors the first game in a way, if you exit the game, you will love a receiving level, showing the hardcore experience of the first receiver, it was all or nothing, receiver 2 binds you to the game, if you chose to play it, you need to keep pushing foward to finish it, until you die or actually give up for the day.

One thing that i really like is that the drones are very modular, there are many ways to incapacitate and take them down, bits and parts comes out of them depending where you shoot, very satisfying.

I have seen a lot of the people also complaining about the new "Threat tape" and "Negligent discharge" system. Its a big change compared to the first receiver, since the only way you could actually die in that game was from jumping out of the level or getting shot, in Receiver 2 you can actually hurt yourself in many more ways. Its explained in early tapes that guns will malfunction a lot more because of the mindkill, if you holster a gun too quickly with a loaded round in its chamber it will most likely discharge and you will have a case of "glock leg". This mechanic, even being kinda harsh and dumb, it gives an actual reason to use the safety on your guns, and i think it fits very well the receiver lore, for safely holstering a weapon you need to make sure that you have safety, or if the gun doesnt have safety (like glocks and revolvers) you need to make sure the gun doesnt have its hammer ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and safely holster it (holding the holster button will make your character do a safe holster).

I wont get into too much detail about the "Threat tapes", but i want to say that they can be disabled in the options menu, and they give a lot more lore to the game, and you can actually inspect them after the initial message for the story of other receivers and what led them to the mindkill, just make sure your gun is on safety when collecting one of those, or if you start hearing a more depressive tape, quickly unload your gun.

Overall i would say this game really is an improvement on the first game, theres still a lot of minor fixes, but its a solid time wasting and challeging game, if its on sale i would say to give it a go. I came to this game with not a lot of expectations because of the changes, but im very happy on how it turned out to be. Give it a go.
