I like what I see so far of this little RPG Maker-meets-Minecraft, if you will. It's early, but functional. I'm impressed with proposed graphics for it.

Only my opinion, but I think there's oodles of potential in a builder game that looks like an old-school 2D RPG, especially if multiplayer is being added, the graphics look like traditional, Japanese RPGs.

I see the potential for a host of possibilities, including appealing to an audience that loves old RPG artwork, by including countless craftable items, clothes, furniture and more.

Not too mention if the possibility of modding is ever introduced in a way, say, Minecraft is moddable. That would expand the appeal tremendously if you can start including functional pipes, oil, engines and the like, similar to the way modding has blown-up around other building games.

Or add a little bit of Terraria progression by having multiple underground levels, each increasingly difficult with better ore and items to get.

This base framework functions and embarrassing or not, I've blown 7 hours just chopping trees and digging so far in its current state.

I look forward to the possibility of more varied terrain, better graphics, and lots and lots more items and activities to take part it!

While now, itself considered old, Avernum shows indie ingenuity, technology and ideas of its time being applied as an old-meets-new factor to Isometric, turn-based RPGs before its time. The world-map movement and near-seamless switch to turn-based combat mode is satisfying without taking me out of one map or singular-world feel. The world is huge and fun to explore in a movement mode that acts like real-time, but does all the individual move-calculations behind the scenes. When in combat I can then seamlessly take control of each character, playing my turn-based combat.

The dialog and story are great, the world feels non-linear, and combat is fun. I recommend this game to anyone who wants their RPG itch scratched, but fans of almost any RPG variant may also love Avernum, especially turn-based-combat fans.

A terrific return to Turn-Based Combat, with a slightly darker, fantasy story. It at once feels like a renaissance of the turn-based genre, but with some newer, unique ideas. Character customization looks outrageous and daunting at first, but with a single type of Adventure Point and clear class-goals, linear guidance eases the pain, while still allowing anyone to experiment with wild combinations. It's a classic tale of old-school meets new-school, all in a really tightly-produced package. Graphics, story and gameplay are all great.

Not a standard game, but rather an interactive story. The story isn't standard, and it definitely isn't the usual horror genre for an adventure game, but it's a unique and interesting game, nonetheless.
