Best 3D Sonic game to date. Level design in OG Gens is already top-tier and they somehow cranked it up to 11 in Shadow Gens.

Update - 10/27/2024: I have 100%ed both Sonic and Shadow Generations and I still stand by what I said about this being the best 3D Sonic game ever made. If Frontiers could walk, then it allowed this game to run, here's hoping the next game is a widely acclaimed masterpiece!

WAY better than Episode I. If you like the 2D Sonic games, I can safely recommend this. This is far from amazing like the Genesis games and Mania are, but it's not trying to be like those games, it has unique concepts enough to give it its own identity, if this game didn't have Sonic 4 in the name I believe the fanbase would have praised the hell out of this game. Also the special stages are REALLY good, one of my favs in the series.

7/10, skip Ep 1 and just play this if you want the Sonic 4 experience.

Flawed but excellent outing in the Sonic franchise. The Knuckles/Rouge sections are weak but far from terrible (with the exception of a couple of abysmal levels). Every other gameplay style I have found to be incredibly enjoyable and rewarding to play through, ESPECIALLY the Sonic/Shadow sections, those alone are worth purchasing this game.

The story is also surprisingly very strong here, one of the best in the entire franchise, not everyone plays an important or strong role, but it is still satisfying when everything comes together near the end, the entire climax of this game is just awesome. The much darker tone compared it's predecessor without being excessive or edgy like Shadow The Hedgehog (2005) is a very welcome change as well.

And the biggest source of replayability for this game is the Chao Garden. Such a genius idea, and genuinely baffling that this has not been properly implemented in a future mainline game. This mode is beloved by many players including myself, and I sincerely wish the next mainline Sonic game adds this mode to it.

I like this game, quite a lot actually. I think the zones, gimmicks, and overall innovations this game adds makes it a solid and worthwhile entry into the franchise.

BUT, I cannot in good conscious, recommend buying this game full price. As I said at the start, I really like this game, but it is not worth the full price. This game is very flawed, ESPECIALLY in the bosses in the late-game, they are such massive pace breakers and if you are not prepared, get ready for a lot of deaths that feel incredibly unfair and cheap.

If you absolutely love Sonic, especially Classic Sonic and you are easily willing to overlook the bad, I recommend this but only when it's on sale. It's worth $30 USD max, anymore than that is absurd.

If you are not a Sonic fan or want this to be your first Sonic game, it's not worth it. There are better starting points for the series, like Origins (Damn you SEGA for de-listing the original games off Steam) and Mania, or Generations and Frontiers for the 3D installments.

My final score of this game is an 8/10, if the price of this game lowers with time, I will change this review to a positive one.

Update #1: Trip's story was insufferable, my review score of this game is now a 7/10. Worst final boss in the entire franchise.

Update #2: Last story is very short, just one boss, however this boss is thankfully much more enjoyable, and my score for this game is back to an 8/10
