I wasn't able to get into slay the spire but coop in this game with friends is a lot of fun.

Implementation is a bit clunky.
Game has a whitelist for modules meaning some native python modules are not allowed.

Basic stuff like functions/dicts/lines of code are locked behind "upgrades". I'm not really a fan of that mechanic, however so far I've been able to unlock whatever I need to beat the current level.

Game makes you use a coordinate system but there's no way to see the coordinate system so you have to use trial and error a bunch till you figure out the coordinates for stuff. There are getpos type methods on objects but calling them is not allowed outside of the level editor.. not sure why that decision was made.

I ran into a bug limiting the movement of a platform preventing me from beating the level. I didn't realize it was a bug and spent 20+ minutes trying to figure out how to solve the level within those constraints before giving up. Then I found out after a restart it was a bug and the platform shouldn't have a positional limitation.

Game is definitely not worth it while there are bugs like the one I encountered.

I used vs code while playing. Dev recommends running the scripts from in the game, not in vs code.. The only way to see the start/stop buttons in game is if you have the code window open in game. If I'm coding in vs code I don't want the huge code window open in the game but I need the start/stop buttons. Those should always be available even when the code window is closed.
Felt like I was fighting the game constantly.

I'm going to agree with a lot of others. This game is pretty grindy. I'm pretty confident the ships you have access to initially aren't good enough to win on easy. To actually get far in a run you need to play it safe and spend a lot of turns picking off small groups.. but the game also takes points away from you for each turn your run lasts.

The hazardous tiles are a huge pain in the ass. You're not able to queue jumps through those systems so you're often stuck going to them then waiting for your drive to fill and your point defense systems don't shoot at asteroids in the asteroid fields.

Prefixing the review with the following:
I have 100 hours in this game so far but I'm actually not done the main quest yet and plan to finish up all major quests before finishing the main story. I don't think I'll have any desire to replay the game in NG+

Review:
In all honesty this game isn't too different from something like skyrim. The difference is this game has nicer graphics, guns, a ♥♥♥♥ ton of loading screens instead of organic traveling and is coming out in 2023 not 2011.
I'm not sure this game is fixable. I love scifi but making a good space RPG is not easy.. which is clear from the empty planets and ship flight that is basically pointless outside of the occasional combat which was poorly done. I think the game would require a LOT of work and design changes to be a really great game and that's just not going to happen. I know a lot of people want seamless ship flight from planet to planet but I don't think it's going to fix the game. A lot of their decisions around ship travel was probably the right call to be honest but there is definitely something not right with how the did do things either. All ship aspects of the game are really clunky.

The game isn't *bad* but it's definitely not great. If you're the type of person that's willing to play primarily for the meh questline stories and willing to spend time modding the game for QoL I think you could easily get to 50+ hours.
In order for me to hit 100 hours I had to start modifying my gameplay to avoid the "bad" stuff as much as possible. I stopped going to PoIs unless necessary, I stopped scanning planets and doing PoI quests. This keeps my gameplay storyline dense with very little 'wasted' time. I also limit what I pick up to just money and aid (and guns if they're an upgrade). This keeps me from constantly over-encumbering myself and selling all my ♥♥♥♥ to 11 different vendors. Picking up resources is a waste because it doesn't make any sense to craft. Crafted items are going to get outdated and replaced too frequently to bother with it.

I have 100 hours and I'm plan to finish the main quests.. so I'm not going to say don't get the game.. But I will say at this point I'm definitely not playing for the gameplay. I'm playing for the quest stories.. and I'll admit they aren't that great. If you're willing to do the same then sure, pick up the game.. but you should probably wait for a sale.

The game is very story driven, which I liked. I always had goals objectives to complete beyond improving my ship and exploring for the sake of it.
But it means replay value is pretty low. I got through the story in ~28 hours so I think it's still worth getting especially on a sale.

There are some complex quests that need pen/paper or extra monitors to help with working out the solution. I was in a confined space when playing so I ended up looking up solutions to these but they could be fun to figure out on your own.

There is a small amount of grinding you need to do because there are things you need to purchase to progress a few of your quests that you have to buy with one of the rarer minerals in the game. It wasn't too bad though and if you trade properly you can get what you need in a reasonable amount of time.

The gameplay (batting, baserunning, pitching, fielding) is solid. I'd say slightly better than 3 because it's a bit easier to get on base from a popup.

  • At bats are faster (vs ai). Pitchers don't wait as long between pitches.. it's almost too fast in some cases.
  • I don't have strong opinions either way on the new trait system. I'm leaning towards it being a positive.
  • I haven't made use of it yet but the new franchise mode with loyalty and being able to resign players is a huge improvement and I'm looking forward to it.

Negatives
  • As others have said sound effects are a bit over the top.. but not so much that it takes me out of the game
  • The voices on the other hand are pretty terrible. The players don't sound like people, they sound someone trying to mock someone else's weird laugh.
  • For the most part I don't mind the umps.. but some of their calls are so long and in the middle of at bats that they're still talking as the next pitch is coming in. Those longer voice lines need to be reserved for strike outs or walks.
  • Franchises can't be simmed currently up through a date. That's a feature that I guess they forgot about for launch but it they've said they're planning to add that back
  • Player's shirts are just a skin over the model meaning they stretch with the player moving. This frequently leads to very badly stretched logos on players shirts

Game is great
AI is decent although other players usually provide more challenge.

PvP is a pretty good experience right now as long as you can find people to play against. The active player count has quickly trended down since release. Definitely still enough people playing to get into a game if you want to but it's a bit worrisome long term. The official discord does have scheduled events so even if player count dwindles as long as you're willing to participate in those it should be fine.

The game is incredibly good value. There are plenty of puzzles included with the game that are pretty good and you can make your own out of images you have which gives so much replayability.

The dev so far has been really responsive in the steam discussions section for feature requests and other improvements. I was previously playing puzzles in tabletop simulator but this is more convenient to jump into.
