Don't play this game expecting a good time. The game is being designed to extract funds from your wallet in the most annoying ways possible.

That was a review I posted during the fiasco back in May. I was just about ready to revise it when the sale dropped today, with the Snail only selling select vehicles in the sale. My point is proven, since all the better selling packs are not on sale, because all they care about is money. They're trying to punish us for wanting a better game. Seriously, stay away so you don't end up tied to the Snail's leash

December 2023 update: And again another addition to the madness that is Gajin. They're trying to justify why NATO tanks should have less armour than they're known to have, whilst at the same time giving USSR and Russian tanks almost mythical upgrades that make them near Wunderwaffe. They listened before with a slew of negative reviews, so they'll listen again with this.

Early Access -arvostelu
In this very early build, I can see an amazing game that can come of it. It really scratches my itch for a creative game. I can see myself coming back to this frequently, since its quite flexible with the designs. Here's a rundown of my thoughts so far:

Good Stuff:
Range - The game lets you basically have free reign with your tank design. You can pretty much alter the tank to however you want, as long as its, ya know, a Tank.
Ease of use - The way you can easily switch between designing and testing the tank is good too. It's nice not having to load in and out of an editor like some other games can make you do
Aesthetics - Despite the early access description saying the graphics are in placeholder at the moment, they're still pretty good. Sure they're a bit rough around the edges, but its better than some AAA games that have come out recently.

Bad Stuff:
Lack of customisation - So there are a few areas that you can't customise, yet. You're constrained to a very angular design, which is good for most tanks, but if you want something like a conical turret, or a pike nose, that's not there quite yet.
Complex UI - The UI isn't the worst I've seen, but it is a bit on the complex side. It's more of a side effect of how much information the game throws at you, but the UI does seem a little cluttered at times.

Note, most of the bad issues are side effects of it still being in early access, which is perfectly acceptable. Overall, the game is perfectly functional, and enjoyable, and I can see it becoming a fun little design came to play.

Couple of additions I hope are added eventually:
Complex Shapes - Stuff beyond the basic angular shape, curves are nice too ya know?
Multiple Guns/Turrets - I get why this is a limitation at the moment, but it would be cool to try and make a land battleship
More weapon types - Kinda follows on from the first, but having machine guns as the primary weapon, or ATGMs could be cool
Custom Livery/Decal - I imagine this would be added eventually anyway (by the wording of the designer), but custom designs are always nice
Multiplayer - Probably a long shot, but it would be fun to blow up friends' tanks to show how their designs don't work

Overall, an excellent Early Access title, and honestly worth the £15, if you're a fan of tanks, and ever drawn a custom tank, this is the game for you.

TLDR: Game is pretty good in its state, and will be awesome when completed, but in this state is very much a tool for the rail enthusiast.

So I discovered this game on a whim, whilst browsing the steam store a few hours before it released. The game is as advertised, you can build rails anywhere in the world, and run trains on it, and it does exactly that.

So, is it just a glorified screenshot tool of Google maps with draw functions? No, but also at its heart it is. The game's drawing system is based on drawing a series of beizer curves as rails, to link two or more stations, which you build, onto a map of the world, taken from OpenSteetMap. Then you can buy trains to run on these lines and simulate them running. In its core gameplay loop, it's not too dissimilar to games like transport tycoon or transport fever, but boiled down to it's raw features to give you a very lightweight and freeform option. In this case, lightweight is good as it runs perfectly well, which is impressive for an Early Access game.

However because of this, the game is lacking in some areas. There's no sound in the current version, so all you hear is the clicking and dragging of your mouse as you build. The game only lets you build 2 way track at the moment, so complex rail design is not here yet, but it is on the roadmap so should be added soon, and theres little to no explanation for how the economy system works beyond people demanding refunds if they get charged too much. But I am a fan of being able to charge differing amounts for passengers, rather than a flat passengers give you this much per distance sort of thing like TT. Theres no real indication of how you should timetable trains, though logically the most efficent way would be to assign trains different timetables based on where they finish their journey, but simply telling the train where to start and what line to use does work too.

Overall, the game has great potential, but I feel due to its complexity, it will be limited to those who dream up their own rail lines, or enjoy building simulating reality. I feel like any of the holes the games has now, can and will be rectified when it leaves early access.

One thing I would like to see that I haven't seen on the roadmap though is the ability to curve platforms, since most platforms (in the UK at least) are marginally curved, and therefore it would be better for more reaslistic building. Also maybe tramlines being altered, mainly so you don't have to build viaducts every time you want to cross a tiny stream since bridges won't autobuild with tramlines.

A very good game, and I'd reccomended to anyone who likes trains, and those who don't but want to give it a shot.

If you're seeing this game, and like the look of it, but are scared off by the mixed reviews, most of those can be boiled down into three different categories:
  1. Game is too complex to understand
  2. DLCs are too overpriced to be worth it
  3. The game isn't version X anymore

The first is simply a fact of most Paradox games: they are complex. Play any game with Paradox's Clausewitz engine and they will be inherently complex. The engine wasn't named after one of the best strategists of the 19th century for no reason. This game, like all the others out of Paradox development studios are not for the casual player. Sure, a casual player can get into the game and enjoy it, but unless you're prepared to learn the game, you probably won't get much enjoyment out of it.

The second is a very personal question: Do you consider £15/$20 to be worth it for an expansion to a game? Would you rather buy another expansion to this game over a brand new game at the same price? No one can answer that question for you - I'm biased in both liking the game, and having most of the expansions, but the question of whether you'll drop more money for full price expansions, buy them in sale, or none at all, it totally up to you. Bear in mind, that if any of your friends have the game and the expansions, if you join a game they host, you get access to those expansions too, so its great for testing out which features you like.

Third is more of an issue for games in constant development. Sure, the game wasn't what it was when it first came out. I remember distinctly being stumped by the new economic system of 2.2, but I got used to it, and prefer it now to the old version since I'm used to it. Indev games have these issues so if you're someone who gets attached to a game, and hates when even a tiny bit is changed, this probably isn't for you either.

Besides all that, this game is an awesome time-sink. The game is immersive and can easily keep you hooked for hours at a time. Sure, it has it problems like a steep learning curve, but that is the same for most 4X games. From being a normal spacefaring research race, to robots driven to assimilate the galaxy, the game is fun due to how much you can do, once you know how. I would recommend this to anyone who likes Sci-fi, and gets a kick out of blowing stuff up.

A brilliant game, which if you've enjoyed any other visual novel you'll probably enjoy. The gameplay is similar to Steins;Gate with Delusion Triggers instead of Phone Triggers, and its set in the same universe, so there's nods to the game littered throughout it. If you start playing, you'll find it difficult to put it down until you've exhausted every ending. Recommended for anyone who enjoys a good story.
