It has its glitches and it bugs. It has problems and balancing issues. HOWEVER. This game is consistently fun and enthralling. For very nearly any idea you can dream up there's a way to accomplish it and for those few things that you can't, there's a mod for that. The community and game are bound to bring out the best and most creative parts of any player's mind. Yes the game can feel overwhelming at times and you definitely need to bring your thinking cap, but it's well worth it. Keen has difficulties at time synergizing with player desires, but it's constantly trying and working to improve the game experience.

The game is a lot of fun and I highly recommend it. It does have several big issues though, as of 11/7/2020. Building restrictions... This is probably the biggest issue. It hard to enjoy a game about building a town and expanding when there's such a harsh building limit. EVERYTHING in the game takes money. Money isn't super hard to come by but especially early on there's not too much you can do to get enough. From being forced to buy simple recipes to being forced to buy schematics for things as simple as a shovel... It's very limiting, especially when you have to pay taxes, constantly spend money to buy things for your farm and livestock, buy livestock itself, etc... Very little of the things you can purchase are available in trade for work, effort, and exploring. Many of the items have trash durability. For example a wooden spear. I was unable to progress much further in the tool tree because the building limit crippled me. Something else I am not a personal fan on is not being able to design roads/paths, select furniture for buildings, nor are many of the UIs very friendly.

The game is a ton of fun. It's really fun to explore and to enjoy, but it has a long way to go and needs a lot more content, freedom, and immersion.

So, I may be biased coming from Space Engineers, Ark, and 7 Days to Die. The game is a lot of fun and there's a lot to do and explore but it has a lot of drawbacks that make me feel like I won't be playing it for very long.

The Bad:

Not a ton of content
The game has a static survival map and a lot of the loot and mobs respawn in virtually the same places after so long. There's a lot to do and explore, but a lot of the places and things to explore are virtually identical. It's still a lot of fun but it made me quick to stale for exploration.

Too Grindy
All survival games are a grind, we all know this. However Scrap Mechanic takes it a little too far. It feels like I am working, not playing. The harvesting is slow, the automated systems still require a lot of ground work and grinding, and the vehicles require too much fuel that is very grindy to obtain itself to do far too little. In the end it's this that I think will tear my interest in the game up because I love building unique vehicles for the task at hand but a single simple vehicle will accomplish as much as a complicated one, so there's just no point and not a lot of innovation needed. There's no way to upgrade tools either, so the speed is constant and very slow.

Limited Vehicle Creativity Needed
As previously mentioned, the vehicles don't speed up production all that much. They open new resources and allows for a lot of better and faster resources, but it's still slow, grindy, and arduous. Even with that, there's only one real allowance for tools of each type, meaning that there's not a lot of reason to go all out in design or to make special vehicles. In fact, thanks to the easy removal of parts mechanic, really one vehicle is all you need. Further, with only 3 types of wheel, all a little clunky, and thrusters that don't quite do enough considering fuel costs. It's all very tedious work.

Block Inventory is Bad
As much fun as it is to place all your things around in junkyard fashion to store them, the block storage capacities are horrible. Many items don't stack or only stack to very small amounts, and the amount of available item slots until you start producing large storage bins is abhorrent. It leads to a lot of back and forth trips to places to gather items, tons of junkyard hells, vehicle storage capacity issues, and generally just serves to make the apparent grindiness of the game exacerbated.

Static Adventure Map
My final major negative note is that the map isn't huge, it's static, and it's not a sandbox. This means you are limited to the same island, it will never change, you can't create a happy landscape for what you dream of as the perfect base, and there's not tons of replay value. Combined with the grindiness, expiration date on exploration excitement, and the lack of creativity needed to thrive it really creates a combo for a tapering off of interest for me personally.

Minor Note: No Tool Tips
Recipes don't allow for a mouse over text, so if you're missing an ingredient you have to try to puzzle out the image of the ingredient and hope you can track it down or there's a wiki out there to help you out. A minor gripe, but a big one.

--------------------------------

However, all said and done, the games a lot of fun. It's unique, silly, intuitive, allows for a lot of creativity, has massive potential, very streamlined and easy to play, and has a lot of great features you don't see a lot in other games. Add to all of that the game gets incredibly more fun with other players and it's already an awesome game. My personal hope is that as it develops all of the things I listed will be remedied and this game will become a powerhouse of entertainment on par with any other survival game.

I had a lot of bad to say, but make no mistake, this game has far more positives than negatives. It's well worth the purchase and as time goes on it's only likely to get even better. Well worth the price tag.

So I've had this game for what feels like forever. It was one of the reasons I finally broke down and got steam. Since then I've seen terrible iterations, decent iterations, good, great, and neutral iterations. Alpha 18 is one of the worst. It's slow, bogged down by needless mechanics, the graphics feel sketchy and jumpy, the animations and character models have become cartoonish and lack luster. There were a few down-steps from alpha 12 before it came back up, and 16 was very nearly ideal and then 17 and 18 took big steps away from it. The game feels really bad. The game feels like it forces you to immediately put down roots due to the awful inventory system, melee fighting feels staggered and stacked against the player, the spawning system seems to love spawning zombies right behind you or in places you know you've cleared (that or the pathing AI is uniquely unfair the the player), and the skill system is so convoluted it's a miracle anyone can navigate it.

In short this game has been marked for death by big ideas. It can take as long as 40 minutes to load a random gen world, and random gen is the only map worth your time if you are playing this for its sandbox survival features. Every system has reached the death by details point where you're so bogged down by tiny mechanics you can barely enjoy yourself.

I put hundreds upon hundreds of hours into this game and have been a major supporter but the last 2 versions of the game have been awful. I hope they make their way back to a place where it's fun, but it's certainly not where it's at right now.

So this game is like a polygonal version of Minecraft if it were in space, although far, far more limited. However, every game starts small and there's nothing wrong with that. However right now this game is a shooting star. The shooting star looks pretty and gives you dreams and wishes, but in reality it's just a rock. The game is much like that in that it looks beautiful and there's so much hope and interesting possibilities, but right now it's very limited with finite content. I've taken to calling games like this starfalls.

I recommend getting it if you like games like Minecraft and No Man's Sky because this has a future and if developed properly it has the potential to be just as big with time and love. But for right now don;t expect more than 15 hours of enjoyable experience, even though you might be able to find more. I look forward to this game's development and seeing where it goes.

This game is a lot of fun and despite some of the more stressful aspects of the game it's a pretty great shift if you're looking for something to relax to while playing. The controls are mostly intuitive and those that aren't are well taught (for some reason I can't make myself naturally reverse the right and left click for their functionality because I am used to games like 7 Days to Die where the place button is a right-click...). The scenery is beautiful and the diet to slime husbandry affectation is a pretty wonderful use of mechanics. On the whole I have to say that the game is a wonderful experience and I am enjoying myself a lot.

My two rebukes are these:

(1) First, I understand that this is a loosely scripted game wherein you play a certain character and the events, communications, and interactions are controlled. I am not a huge fan of this in the multiplayer era. I am not saying that this should be shunted to the side, but perhaps a range of characters available with slightly different areas and challenges where a small group of friends might be able to trade slimes indigenous to their starting regions, challenge one another, or maybe even have weird little contests like eating contests, or biggest slime at a "fair", perhaps there could be a chance for the player(s) to meet each other and the NPCs during these events. I am just saying that some multiplayer could work.

(2) The world is just too small with too little to do. In my fourth hour I was rather bored as I had the best slimes I could at that point in the game, explored everything, and had everything on automatic handling. Too put it simply there needs to be more. I know that by the looks of things the devs are working on it, but the game is just extremely short at the moment with very little content. I worry that over time this will become another Stranded Deep with an impressive game with endless potential having no content for so long that it becomes a thing of the past. I don't want that for Slime Rancher, I want it to succeed and developed little squishball wrist rest gel relaxer cushion hybrid slime toys that are strangely weird to touch but endlessly satisfying anyways, I want to see people showing up with vac-packs and cowboy/girl get-ups at conventions, I want people to make their very own plorts and veggies/fruits from the game to have around as cool toys or maybe even candy! So go forth DEVs, and be FRUITful!!!
