I've got 108 listed hours on this game but that's only because I've got a folder for batch SP/MP starts for practice. I play the hell out of this game and it's still unbelievably challenging (especially in multiplayer) and interesting. There are still nations that I haven't even played, much less effectively.

What I will say is that it's not as fresh as it was. I've begun to find it tedious practicing expansion, and I only do it when I feel inspired. It's definitely worth it but it doesn't look like it to a lot of people, and it's not a perfect game - it's just deep and complex and grand. I have friends who don't like the lack of control in battle, particularly since the AI can sometimes leave a lot to be desired.But even as a relatively casual player these days I can still recommend this game one hundred percent.

The various multiplayer and modding communities (Desura, dom3mods, etc.) make this game for me. New content and support and guides help get both new players and veterans out of the gate to start experiencing the game - which is where you really start to develop an understanding of the nuance.

My suggestion to you is to buy it when it's on sale, and play it with your friends (who did the same). Great way to play with and against humans before stumbling into a major community where you will lose often - in a game that usually has 8-20 players, a 15-20% win rate is pretty high.

Go have Dagon lead lovecraftian shamblers out of the ocean to crush the egyptian lizardmen who are flanked by Jotun frost giants and dinosaur-riding amazons. It's pretty cool.
