Steam should really add some kind of "Mixed Feelings" option for reviews. I'm giving this a negative review because I personally don't enjoy it, but I don't quite think it's a "bad" game and it's not something I would warn people away from or anything. And I do think there are plenty of good things to say about it.

I know it's weird to only realize this after 455 hours, but I'm starting to think that I don't like this game.

My main problem is how luck plays such a huge factor in your success. Worse, it the main determiner of whether or not the game is fun. Playing this game feels like playing a slot machine; the only time your having fun is when you're getting lucky. And you will be unlucky very often, to the point that it feels like the majority of the time.

If you happen to not get any DPS upgrades, which is a common occurrence, the game will be extremely frustrating and unsatisfying. If you get Curse of the Blind (which happens at random) and you decide to pick up an item, you can easily end up with some worse-than-useless item that ruins your run. Sometimes you'll just never get keys for the shops or item rooms. This is especially bad for new players, since most of the good items are locked behind achievements.

This is compounded by the fact that the enemies and bosses are just downright obnoxious. I'm sure part of this is just that I suck, but many of the enemies and bosses range from unfun to fight to annoying to straight up ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. If you have a strong run it's not that bad, but if you have a mediocre or god-forbid a bad run, then the enemies that suddenly leap across entire rooms in random directions or teleport on top of you or fire lasers in unpredictable patterns will really start to grate on your patience.

So why did I play this game for so long when it's so frustrating? Because, much like a slot machine, it's undeniably addictive. Because when you finally DO get a good run, it feels awesome. Getting Tammy's Head + Brimstone in Isaac is like the vidyagaming equivalent of getting 4 aces in Poker.
But, for me, those highs just aren't making up for the lows anymore.

The only game where the devs providing regular updates is a bad thing.

The creator of this game is a true artist. It may not be the best dating sim ever made but they're speaking from the heart and that's really what matters.

If you're particularly passionate about creature collectors, then I'd say it's worth giving a try if you don't mind the price.

Otherwise, I don't recommend it.

This game is badass. Playing as the monster is awesome conceptually and fun as hell. Ripping people apart is super satisfying. Even just moving around is enjoyable because of how great the animations are.

This game also has a lot of puzzle-solving and your monster is far from invincible, but the game strikes a decent balance between moments where you're forced to be sneaky and tactical VS moments where you can rip and tear.

The main thing I disliked is there's lots of backtracking through maze-like levels, a problem which is exacerbated by the complete lack of any sort of map.

I've never actually played this game, I just use console commands to mess around with the borders.

Masterpiece of a game, which makes it a horrible tragedy that valve doesn't even care for it enough to keep it playable.

TF2 should be loved and enjoyed for generations, it doesn't deserve to be killed off by people as pathetic as bot hosters, or be left to rot by the company that owns it.

TL/DR - The game is worth it for the amazing creature, building and vehicle creators, but everything else is lackluster at best. If you're primarily interested in the evolution simulator aspect, you'll probably be very disappointed.

The creature creator is absolutely brilliant, the sheer variety of creative monsters that people can and have made is astounding. The less celebrated vehicle and building creators are also incredible. If you like creating and designing aliens and monsters or spaceships, cars and boats, you'll probably love this game.

Sadly however, the "evolution simulation" aspect of this game is as shallow as dry puddle. To even call it that is honestly pretty generous. You rarely, if ever, have to adapt or change to anything. Most changes you make to your creature will be in the form of purely aesthetic changes or giving them objective straight upgrades to the parts they already have. There are no unique ecological niches to fill. Predators are very easy to avoid and hunting is as simple as literally just walking up to an animal and killing it. The climate on every continent of every planet is always just grassland dotted with small forests; no deserts, no tundras, barely even any mountains. Almost every single animal is a nesting animal, and they just stay by their nest doing nothing all day. Occasionally small groups leave the nest to wander around or attack another nest, but this doesn't really change anything and hardly ever affects to player. The only exceptions are the rouge and epic creatures, both of which are solitary wanderers.
