Duke Nukem 3D was the second FPS I watched my father play back when it was first available. There is no reason to have this in your Library other than to reexperience the "real" Duke Nukem and see what FPS gameplay was like in its golden age. For those who wish to harken back to a simpler, more innocent time; where it was clear that aliens were bad guys and deserved every bullet you pumped into them; where the pixelated babes looked just as bad as the aliens you're protecting them from; when "story" and FPS said in the same sentence caused the whole room to laugh uproariously . . . This is the game for you.

Complete with the original game plus the fourth episode The Birth; Duke it Out in D.C.; Life's a Beach; and Nuclear Winter, there's plenty of Duke to go around. Anybody who enjoyed these games in their heyday should have this in their Library. If you don't, you have no excuse.

I used to play this game religiously. I began playing February 2014, after ROTMG was hacked a second time. I was hooked by the irreverence immediately, and made friends just as quickly. I inhaled the comics, laughing uproarioulsy. I joined rareBreed Gaming and quickly rose in its ranks to become a respected and beloved member.

Then the Contracts came out. At first, I was hesitant. I'd already plunked down a lot of money into this game (and I never DID unbox an Unusual). But naivete won the day, and I bought in. I participated in both Gun Mettle and Tough Break. There are videos of me loudly enjoying myself on YouTube. I met more friends. Hijinks ensued.

Then -- a number of my gaming buddies stopped playing. They didn't put money into TF2 as frequently as I did. Where once it would take me literally seconds to single-handedly populate an RB TF2 server (I ♥♥♥♥ you not, all I'd have to do was send invites to the whomever was online on my steam list), I was lucky if I could get five. Luckeir still if I could keep those five around long enough to bring others in.

I began to lose faith in the franchise. Between 2014 and 2018, four comics have come out. FOUR. I'm used to something a little more frequent than that. But I guess I can't expect DC, Marvel, IDW, or Image-level professionalism from a gaming company.

I stopped playing very soon after the Meet Your Match update landed. It was -- crap. No longer could you join a server from a list, you had to be put into a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ queue and wait for-♥♥♥♥♥♥♥-ever in the HOPE that MAYBE you'd get onto a server worth playing on.

TF2 has become Counter Strike: The Saturday Morning Cartoon. There was a damn good reason I played TF2 over Counter Strike. I love FPSs; I grew up watching my father play the original DOOM, Duke Nukem 3D, and Unreal. But these were all games only slightly based in reality. I flatly refuse to play games like Counter Strike, Rainbow Six, Call of Duty, or Battlefield because of how much more realistic they are compared to TF2. I never needed skins on my frigging weapons; I just wanted a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hat, man.

So it is with a sad and heavy heart that I formally change my opinion of TF2. It USED to be a fun game. I haven't touched it in years (although my last-played was December 2017, it was on a dare from a friend, and I logged out in less than three minutes. I HAVE TO BE IN A ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ PARTY FIRST?! Half the fun of joining a random server was in meeting new people!).

And I highly doubt I'll ever go back to it.

I think it's time to give this game a proper review:

I have since developed a love-hate relationship with this game. When you die, you lose everything that character had equipped, in the Inventory, and the Backpack and anything in it. In short, you have to start from square one. Now, this is where the microtransactions come in: there are a lot, and this is an extreme understatement. Any given user has a total of 50 Chests available to them in their Vault. You start out with 1, and purchasing any additional Chest is 500 Gold, which equates to $5 USD. I've purchased every single one; yep, that's $150 into this game, and a large portion of that was BEFORE trading cards were added. And that's just counting the money I used to buy Chests; even more has gone to feeding my Pets and buying Backpacks.

But, it was ROTMG that first introduced me to the social gaming atmosphere that is Steam. I had never used Steam before, and really had only downloaded this game due to the Steam Holiday 2013 Sale. The community, both through Steam and the larger browser community, is generally very kind and generous, and as long as you treat your fellow gamer with the respect you hope to receive, you'll get it. Y'know, just don't be a jerk, and your gaming experience will be that much more fun.

However, if you're scared by the microtransactions, then it is with a heavy heart that I do not recommend this game. There's really no way to progress in the game without putting money into it. How much you do put in is entirely up to you, of course; just be careful. I would say, avoid buying any sort of Weaponry, Armor, Abillities, or eggs from the Nexus. Once you become comfortable enough with the game, more than likely you'll be able to find those Items on your own in the more dangerous areas, or trade for them in the Nexus. Don't be afraid to ask questions: as long as the answer isn't blurted out in all Caps and ends with an expletive or 'n00b!', it's likely a good, honest, correct answer.

Another thing: death, as aggravating as it is, is actually integral to the game. When you die, you receive a tally screen showing you how much Fame you received, which is another form of pseudo-currency in the game. Fame allows you to feed your Pets and upgrade your Guild Hall (if you're part of a Guild).

I've put a lot of time (and money) into this game. It's got a place in my heart. Maybe it'll earn a place in yours, too.

When I first saw the Back to the Future movies, I was immediately enthralled with Michael J. Fox. To this day, he remains a stalwart celebrity crush of mine. TellTale's game is a fantastic blend of the movies' humor and drama, and while the puzzles might not fit into a movie, this isn't a movie. I've not yet finished It's About Time (Episode One), but you can be sure I'll be playing through all five episodes. I hope to convince my father to play this game as well, as the pace and puzzles are right up his alley; I have fond memories of watching him play point-and-click adventure/puzzle games, and it's been a long time since we've found one worth our time. Thanks TellTale! I'll be sure to check our your other games now, too!
