First off, let me say what I think about this game:

It's well worth the price, and the graphics are medium quality. There's some controls and movements that don't feel smooth, but that's expected for a freshly released game. I saw a review talking about hitboxes causing them to crash into nothing, and from driving on the road and on the side of the road, I have so far not hit a single invisible barrier. My grievance with this game isn't about world exploration or the ambushes, either, like some other reviews(Only at first are the ambushes rough, as they can destroy your vehicle easily unless you upgrade it. After that, you can easily just drive by them, and if you're lucky they don't even get the chance to shoot). My issues stem from easily avoidable bugs that could've been detected if playtesters intentionally looked for them. I can list a few, and then afterwards I'll explain what I do enjoy about this game.

The two main grievances have to do with the ambushes on the border that happen from time to time. Both are game-breaking and can force you to be pushed back to either a checkpoint, or to the start of the day. If you happen to be using the telephone for time-specific ambushes that aren't triggered by sleeping, it teleports you out into the battlefield where you cannot move, as for some reason you receive a new pair of arms that removes your legs, supposedly. You can't move, but you can shoot, which makes it not entirely guaranteed for you to die, but it is pretty guaranteed especially if an enemy throws a grenade. Another I came across was with the cars driving up during the ambush. At some point, before they exit or during the animations they make while exiting, I shot at them, which showed it did damage. However, their health bar did not deplete. Once they exited and drew their guns, they were invulnerable to everything. It forced a reset from me because there was literally nothing I could do to stop them. Again, if this was playtested thoroughly, these wouldn't be present. Sure, on release any game can excusably have bugs and game-breaking issues that weren't discovered during playtesting, but with how some of these you're guaranteed to experience at least once in your playthroughs, that's where I say it's doubtful that no one during testing came across any of these, whether looking for bugs or not.

With those issues aside, I'll get on to the things I like about this game. First off, before you install the game, from how it looks and how well the game runs, it's surprising how small the game's storage requires compared to other games of similar quality. The quality of gameplay is comparable to Ubisoft games on here, excluding the cutscenes. There's some times where the frames drop below 60, but it's not very noticeable, and I'm on the default settings of the game. For default settings, I'd say it's debatable whether your frames should ever drop noticeably, but I think it depends on the minimum requirements more than your current specs.

This game is heavily inspired by Papers, Please: A fictional Slavic communist republic has a border crossing that the player works at, and based on criteria you are informed on for that day and for what you're taught in the previous days, you determine whether that individual is allowed to cross. Just like Papers, Please, there's people who attempt to forcefully cross the border, and there's attacks you have to fend off. The documents, the photo, the multiple regions that are constantly having issues with each other, the rebellion in your region, it all remains quite clear. I dare say this is the closest game to Papers, Please that's 3D.

The process for finding smuggled items is quite simple, as is the display for it. The items you uncover from parts of the vehicle or from cargo isn't accurate to what's displayed inside it all the time. However, sometimes it's easy to miss these. Like the trainer says to you in the first few days, people can get inventive with their methods of trying to smuggle things. These methods feel realistic, too, as while they are forced to have a snake mark only visible in UV light wherever they hide smuggled items, they can blend in very well dependent on what it is. You'll often overlook some of these, and I applaud that. One thing I might add that I hope gets changed is the single jump sound that you hear each time. It's the same with no pitch change, so it feels like I'm playing Quake in a Slavic countryside.

For those who don't want to read all of this, I'll summarize and say things in my own words in a short few sentences: You are a demi-god who can choose to either fight crime or to fight the government. When you are ambushed by enemies, or when you attack those who oppose you, they have no idea how powerful the force that they've interrupted currently is. With your superior aim, vitality, and detection, you strike fear into your enemies in their last moments of life, making them question their life choices and wish that they didn't take this path. Also there's bugs so I can't currently recommend it.

EXTREMELY unoptimized. it looks great, but there's so many issues with graphics that make me recommend the regular version instead. i'm talking unoptimization to the level where no matter what graphics settings you have, the fps drops below 30. in terms of resolution, it doesn't let me change to any other refresh rate than 50 hz, even after i try to apply it. some of it is borderline unplayable because of how bad the fps drops are, and i have an rtx and an i7. my computer is well above the minimum requirements and yet this game runs like trash at some points. i enjoyed some smooth, enjoyable gameplay for about an hour or so before i came across this issue, and it immediately swayed me to say that this enhanced version is not worth it.

the code isn't even finished for this heist. there's one for the hidden vault where an interaction text isn't implemented for the laptop, and there's the objective of finding intel. for some reason the indicator for the loot securing via the helicopter doesn't show up, only the van's. when the lead scientist confronts the scientists you lure out using the PA, and tells them to get back to work, in my runs, they just keep talking and never go back inside. there's an error for the kart achievement when you get it in-game, it shows 2 minutes in the image instead of 1 minute like it's supposed to. based on release from what i've seen, this one is the most unfinished among all the heists i've ever played and witnessed. this isn't worth this much money for the dlc, although i will say the payday this can give is okay-ish(only if you secure all extra loot). only get it as part of the bundle.

overall, this is possible to do without killing anyone, but it's tedious to do so. oftentimes it's worth killing civilians at some areas, but there are things implemented to allow you to not kill anyone, which i find nice. while it can be rng with the inspectors that arrive sometimes in stealth, it's doable. the heist and its walkthrough are decent, definitely better than some other heists that you can do in stealth, but the development and gameplay are terrible. other than the design of the whole heist and the modelling of the building and all, it was clearly lazily created. i still like the heist itself, again, but i absolutely despise how it was released

For the time it was released, this game was most definitely good for its time. The AI had an excuse for having such terrible pathing and primitive thinking that pre-dates Counter-Strike: Source AI by twenty years, even though Source came out nearly ten years before this. Throughout its time so far, its developers have proven that they have no intentions on improving the AI so they don't clip through doorframes and sides of objects, as well as completely backtrack their steps to "properly" walk through a doorway. Solo loud is a terrible idea because the AI pause at every turn they make for almost a second, so getting downed guarantees you won't get revived if the AI is on a different floor. The file size for this game is also atrocious for its old graphics, and a lot of people joke you could rob a bank real-time before the download finishes, which is true. Definitely none of that storage was put into a good AI script, that's for sure.

Now to talk about online mode. It's quite alright, especially when you can choose when newcomers who join can drop-in, as well as the limit for who can join. Only thing I dislike about online play is that splash damage is a thing for no reason. This means people can team-kill each other even though shooting at your teammates does nothing unless friendly fire mutator is on. Whether it be snowballs or high explosives, you can down your teammates with splash damage even if friendly fire isn't activated, which feels pointless. This could've been fixed a long time ago, too, but nothing has been done; downing yourself with the splash damage is understandable, but being able to down others with it when you can't damage them with bullets makes no sense. That's all I have to say about online play.

Most of my time in this game has been spent offline, so it has allowed me to really get a good look into just how bad the AI, whether allies or enemies, functions. They operate on the same script or lines of script, it seems, in terms of pathing and detection. Their turning rate, however, is random. Sometimes they flick harder than a CSGO global, other times they inch their way towards 180 degrees. Mods can help fix this, but as OVERKILL has sabotaged some mods in the past, it's logical that they would've fixed this by now; they haven't, of course; they've gone bankrupt and the DLC for this game is over ten times the base game's price, a ratio higher than any other game with DLC I've ever heard of, which makes sense for how poorly this game looks. The developers are clearly not very efficient. Many of the recent DLCs have gotten mixed reviews because they know OVERKILL is just making them for cash grabs, not for the passion of the game; they've clearly lost passion for this game, which explains why there's a sequel in the making. Hopefully all these things are fixed in the sequel, otherwise it's going to flop, which I predict is going to happen either immediately or pretty soon after it's released. Additionally, the Scarface DLC has had things removed from it you can only get back with mods, and for whatever reason they removed those parts of the DLC, it's their fault for doing it; I'd assume it's for copyright reasons, which makes them look even more foolish than they are, but the reason could most likely be avoided. It doesn't make that much sense to directly involve characters but not directly involve guns, and instead make them bootlegs of the original guns in real life.

These are the major reasons I cannot recommend this game, although there's parts of it I absolutely love that keep me playing; this doesn't mean that I'm a hypocrite because I don't recommend it. A lot of fans of this game make that claim and it's a good point: how can you play a game actively and still not recommend it?

For me, this is based on personal opinion of the developers and the game as a whole; the developers are as greedy as a company gets for things, and it's sad to see that. "They're a company, it's what they do," is a common argument people make. That's true, but that's more of something you'd see in a monopoly than in a game franchise that's slowly dying. In a monopoly, they have control over the prices which can decrease surplus. The demand(average revenue) decreases the higher they set the price. OVERKILL is in no way a monopoly because of this, because a lot of its fanbase doesn't care what price it's set to, because they just buy it no matter what. The fanbase of this game is mainly consisted of worshippers of the game's lead developer. So to conclude that, the developers are not what you'd call a company, because a company has to deal with the price and demand; there's little to no change in demand in this case because many of the fans aren't affected by the price.

Now let me get to the parts of this game I like and even love. The music for this game is amazing, and I mean amazing. It fits the atmosphere, and most of the heists have a fixed default soundtrack that was made specifically for it, and they fit very well. There's also customization which means you'll almost never encounter two people with the same outfit unless it's a default outfit. The game also has great replayability, and some of the voice lines are funny and even fitting for their situations. Others are sort of annoying, but that's from my point of view; from looking at other reviews, a lot of people also love the voice lines. Some of the scenarios are also great, I have to say.

That's the things I can think of which I like the game for, and which is what keeps me playing. The fallacy of not recommending the game and actively playing it I still don't understand since not recommending the game doesn't mean I don't like it, at least in some sense. Compare this to a ton of players in other games who have spent thousands of hours on them and still play them. They may not enjoy it or recommend others to suffer like they have, but they still enjoy parts of the game. With that, I end my review here by concluding that many parts of this game have remained near the same state that they have upon release, and that addons for this game have the same quality put into them despite costing as much as the game on 50% price PER addon. The developers also have broken promises to their community in the past and have shown that they have no passion for the game, and that they're now just in it for the money. Hopefully the sequel makes up for this, although I doubt it will because with how long they've been doing this, it's very likely they'll keep doing it with PAYDAY 3.
