the game is beautiful. the puzzles are also pristine and have ten different difficulties, ranging from taking several seconds to upwards of at least an hour. there are dozens of different puzzles, and has a lot of things similar to the talos principle where there are different regions filled with puzzles.

so why do i not recommend it? well...there's a few sad, unfortunate reasons why i don't recommend this game. first off, is performance. god...no matter what settings, what graphics, even if it looks like it's a 3d game from the early 2000s by the time i finish changing video settings...it runs like garbage. i suspect this is due to it loading the entire map at once, as well as the puzzles, in an inefficient manner. you'd think it would be unity engine or something with struggles with performance regardless of graphics.

the second reason is online-offline play and how it works. the game used to be online where you could help others with puzzles, interact with other players, and see a live feed of what puzzles people were solving. i was looking forward to seeing how you could interact with others, but...a couple things caught my eye pretty quickly. for one, there doesn't seem to be any direct way to communicate with people besides markers and emotes. no text chat or anything. you could add people and message them that way, but that makes it harder to find help. it hits more as though it's meant to be a game you play with friends instead of playing online on the servers with random people, helping each other as you progress. the other thing i noticed was the utterly terrible server lag. i'm talking like a server that no matter where you are in the world, it just stutters and occasionally rubber-bands you all over. normally this would be fine, no big deal, but there's whole mechanics and puzzles involving movement, speed, precision...you can't do any of those when the connection is that bad.

in addition to that, they have recently announced they will be shutting down online servers, encouraging players to migrate their save progress to offline play. people have frequently warned in the reviews about how bad this game is for your storage because of how often it saves, which doesn't seem to be the case anymore; they decreased the save frequency. this comes with another catch, where you can't really force it to save, and oftentimes when you load back in your progress will be weird, like negatives amounts of sparks. as far as i can find there's no manual save options.

i eventually have made it to the end of the game, and honestly anticipated there would be some sort of ending towards the vault of the vitric like it implies because of how much you must do to unlock it. unfortunately, despite clearing it...there doesn't seem to be any ending. it seems to be more of a game with lore you unlock and discover, but without an actual ending. i'm unsure if i missed something or the ending never triggered(unless you have to solve every single puzzle on the island, which would take several hundred hours of playtime) but it felt underwhelming. it's what had me so eager to progress in the first place.

all in all, this game isn't worth the money. it was free for a little bit, but now they returned it back to its price. it's right up your alley if you just want to go around solving various puzzles, and killing time. if you want anything else more than that, i wouldn't recommend it because it falls short of doing so.

the game is a little confusing at first with how it starts off, but you adapt pretty quickly to what you're supposed to be doing. until the very last location, i found the game to be a great experience, despite only playing for 75 minutes total and fully completing it. slight spoiler warning here...

what's the catch? it's probably just some details i'm confused about, as well as a couple bugs(no, not the ones you photograph.) the protagonist makes a huge jump in logic about how a certain animal is causing the island to die, instead of immediately assuming other natural events or disasters that would cause something like that to happen, where life is barren. it caught me off guard, and it might make more sense if you read through the journal before it gets stolen in that last area. the bugs in question i experienced were related to picking up and dropping items. for some reason, only in the second location, the character has excessive trouble in picking things up. it's not unplayable, but it gets frustrating, and upon looking through other reviews, i believe this is what is the most noticeable issue people have. again, it doesn't render the game unplayable, so i don't see why it should be something that warrants the game to not be a good recommendation.

back from the negatives, there's a couple of things that remind me of classic games, like windwaker's selfie mode with expressions included. it's a light surprise i uncovered and found to be a bit of a delight. it's definitely not what makes me recommend the game, but it's a bonus. if you like nature and photography, i think this game will be right up your alley; the puzzles aren't necessarily difficult, and while the graphics are rather simple, there's some depth to the game's ecosystem.

it's been about four and a half years or so since i first played this game. it's a difficult, cognitive survival horror that i have to say is still one of the best out there. i played it on console first, though...where i think the game is better than it is on steam. there's a few reasons for this, but i want to go more in-depth about the game before i mention them. all of this as a whole made me decide this wasn't worth playing through again past where i got all those years back, nor worth finishing the game because of some frustrating issues that waste your time.

the game's ai is definitely not a disappointment. i think it's what makes this game truly difficult and terrifying. whether it's the alien or just scavengers, they have already got me numerous times before i've even made it back to how far i made it on console. some of it, though...was because of bad enemy spawning triggers. in cases where you have nowhere else to go, it makes passing them impossible sometimes. let's start with the engineering deck.

after grabbing the data transmitter, it was rather unclear where it wanted me to go to find the new data cell. thinking maybe the other open transit area had answers, i went there to engineering. upon reaching there and searching around, i found there was nowhere for me to go, so i went back to the transit station...to find four scavengers fully-armed waiting for me. there's nowhere i can loop them around, or hide from them and cause enough distraction to get away without getting hurt. the game isn't very beginner-friendly after travelling to the spire, unfortunately. it's more of a personal issue because i went the wrong way, but that spawn trigger shouldn't be there when you don't have the items to progress through engineering regardless.

another thing about the ai i think is a double-edged sword is how peeking works. they can notice you sometimes, but it's unreliable and oftentimes i've found myself being fully spotted for briefly peeking once while they were inconveniently facing my direction. in spots where you're completely surrounded, this means death. it's a part of the game i think is certainly smart and appropriate, but also partially inappropriate when it means you can't have a way to control your success in certain scenarios, which makes playing the game all the way through without dying even more of a hell than you'd think.

so what's the issue i'm having that makes me say you should play the console version instead of this? what makes me complain about the ai like a crybaby when it's not really the focus, but something i want to talk about anyways to highlight some inconvenience that hurts the fun of the game? it's a simple thing, which i think is just because of the platform the game's on: crashes.

god, out of all places for the game to crash, this certainly isn't one, particularly if you're in a tough spot and making progress, or trying to play without dying. things like allowing you to switch floors on maps that don't have multiple floors, causing a crash. random loading crashes. collision-related crashes like loose objects interacting with either the player or npcs. i can't bear it, man...i love this game, but the instability of it crashing sours my opinion of it on steam. it's not performance related, as far as i can tell; none of it appears to be. i can run maximum graphics just fine, aside from cutscenes being like 30 fps for some reason regardless of settings.

long story short, save VERY frequently when you're playing on higher difficulties. if you don't want to deal with that, play it on your console instead(unless i miraculously never encountered a crash on there, in which case it's much less common at the worst.) i love the alien series, and even my family dog is named after the protagonist. i unfortunately just can't find the room to love this game like i did when i first played it. maybe it'll be different for others, but i personally don't recommend it because of how it performed.

some achievements are nearly impossible or unfeasible and the droprate is extremely slow. barely an incremental game anyways, since there aren't necessarily upgrades that it has, only the drops impacting your numbers. it's one of the slowest incremental games out there at the most. what i can give this above the others is that they’ve made better games than what almost all the other scam devs could ever dream of developing, so chances are this’ll improve.

on top of this, the developer is no longer removing cheaters from the leaderboard. a bit of a punch to the face for the few who actually are legitimately competing for the top score, which is arguably the most valuable part of the game somehow

the drop rates for everything else is extremely common which makes you think legendary is a drop that'll take a couple hundred hours at the most...nah. let's multiply that by at least five and also restrict your drops to only occur when you're in-game because the timer won't go down if the game isn't open.

pinnacle of time-wasting. wouldn't be surprised if this was a bitcoin miner in some way which would certainly make sense for the whole in-game process for drops.

just make the game paid as a whole if you're going to add a paid dlc to it.

it’s not even your work and you’re deciding to make it paid because whatever pathetic job you have isn’t enough for you. it’s not like gorilla tag, where there’s a buncha cheaters so they made it paid. anticheat exists.

i was wondering why they wouldn’t leave the singleplayer mode free to play, but i guess this is why: because they want money.

it's hard to say no to this despite there being a couple softlocks that guarantee a fail early on in the game, plus some useless mechanics/items here and there.

overall, the game has so far provided the cute veneer over its sinister atmosphere and plot, which i've found more entertainment in than disappointment. i'm unsure if i'm swayed to this opinion because of the roguelike crusades that bear many similarities to the binding of isaac, a game which i have sunk over 800 hours in and enjoyed playing. either way, i have to say that the rest of the game is quite enjoyable, although tense or anxiety-inducing at times provided the frequent feeling of being stuck in a hole or weighing two negative options. there's also some things you can do to cheese your way out of extra negative consequences, like repeatedly interacting with dissenters whenever they try and broadcast so your cult doesn't get influenced and they leave without issues, or even sacrificing the only cult member who's against sacrifices to avoid it being a problem in the future. the latter is more reasonable and feels like a logical solution, but the former thing feels like an exploit.

there are some weapons the game provides you in certain locations for crusades that are almost utterly worthless to use, like a hammer in heket's realm. not only is it slow, but it has a massive delay which renders use against projectile-hurling enemies or flies to be incredibly tedious and risky. it's a matter of rng determining whether that's possible, and i wish there were some exceptions for which weapons you could encounter in certain realms given these enemies nullifying their strengths and their overall usage.

the game's difficulty increases at a rather consistent level, which i appreciate. you get used to the increase each time, or else you suffer consequences. there's a lot of strategy to it, and instead of brute-force, that's exactly why i think it's done quite well, and is another reason i recommend this game.

as for followers, it feels like some variants die older than others, or maybe i encountered a coincidence that felt too good to be a coincidence. their mouths are all pretty much the same, and don't match their face or species very well in some cases. it'd be nice if they matched their head, but it's not the game's focus so i don't think they'd be bothered to do so.

overall, it's got some issues here and there, enough for me to recommend against it, but i'm choosing to recommend it because it appeals to me in a couple ways while also doing some other things incredibly well. it's hard to make a game so well-liked while having problems people will constantly be wondering about and hoping to be fixed, and that's exactly what they did with this game and its flaws.

it's hard to tell if this game was made intentionally to be garbage or if it's just a passion project they gave up on as they were trying to figure out the code and released it anyways. it runs terribly. you can't turn off the music. you can't access the settings unless you're in the main menu. there are voicelines that don't fit at all and feel like they were translated to english. the stamina meter is useless because you can still spam the dash button at zero stamina because it recharges immediately. the roll button plays an audio sound every single time you press it, regardless of whether you finished the current roll or not. the adventure mode's platforming still has mouse control during 2d sections, meaning you can walk off the map if you move your mouse. you can softlock your game in the adventure mode level select if you press the roll button. you can fall infinitely in level 2-3 in some spots. it's hard to believe this was released.
