My favorite action platform game of all time is "Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts" for the SNES published by Capcom in 1991. It is unforgiving, has precise controls and incredible soundtracks.
Properties like these can also be found in titles like "Death's Gambit", "Blashpemous" and "The Messenger".
"The Messenger" tests the player's dexterity in diversified levels and the gradually acquired new skill set fits into it very well.
Every single soundtrack in this game is a catchy tune and some dialogs are hilarious.
With about 12 hours on the first play through while collecting all the hidden power seals it has a good length.
The game element of switching between an 8 or 16 Bit visualization are perfectly implemented with meaning and the therefore linked change of the sounds are the little details which make one fall in love with "The Messenger".

In preparation to fully maximize your disgust for rats I recommend you to watch the movie "Rats (2016)" directed from Morgan Spurlock. It's a documentary picture but also classified with the genre horror.
Furthermore, read the book "La Peste (1947)" by Albert Camus to arm your mind with all that horrible fortunes the people befell while you wander by all that closed doors in the pest infested cities.
In the game itself set in the Kingdom of France you play mainly the girl Amicia which protects her little brother Hugo by all means from both the Inquisition and the rats.
While your characters progress their adventure through villages devastated by the disease they find more and more useful tools to handle their foes which gives you eventually some scope in how to deal with the encountered dangers.
While the game depicts such a dark, brutal and evil world the level design is so beautiful that the developers maybe set them self the standard to make "every frame a painting".

A hack & slay game where it seems that rarely has a development team consumed more hallucinogenic drugs during the creation process. Epic boss fights of superlative, which can be a challenge to beat first try, but have a fair and rewarding learning curve. It's a good PC port with even 4k visuals if that's what you fancy. The recommended input device is a controller, that will be put to a stress test which is typical for these button mashing type of games. The third person camera view has its problems in tight indoor areas, since it gets stuck against walls, but the majority of game areas are in the open. Definitely worth picking up on a sale when you don't want to miss out a dive into one of the most crazy gaming worlds out there.

As a sane person, this is as close as you can get to dive into the world of a schizophrenic person. A rather short gaming experience in a dismal yet beautiful gaming world, which sadly often catches Senua's foot around edges, but can be prohibited by staying on the main paths. There are some bugs which can leave you in an unescapable death loop or which reset you to a point at which the level can't be progressed anymore, but all could be fixed with a simple reloading of the level. The fighting system is held simple but yet whole with all the standard moves. I very much recommend playing this game with some decent headphones. The sound quality and it's implementation into the game mechanics is phenomenal.

A MUST PLAY!

"Lorelai will never forget that day.
The little she had, it was taken away.
Her whole world disintegrated. She never really had a chance ...
But Lorelai refused to give up.
She will fight. And even death won't stop her from getting it all back."

For those who already fell in love with R. Michalski's "The Cat Lady", will more than welcome his third child Lorelai to the now completed trilogy "Devil Came Through Here".
Experiences like these are video game gems and utmost art.

Since I knew this would come out I had an erection.
And now after release it's a wet dream come true.
The vast loss of body fluids due to the constant ejaculation can't be healthy, but it's a small price to pay.
I feel like taken back into my younger years, when I ♥♥♥♥ my pants playing the older installments of the series.
Well done once more CAPCOM and please release also a remake of Resident Evil 3. Just the thought of running around with Jill Valentine ... ah oh ... not again ...
