The question I'm given when reviewing a game on Steam is whether I recommend it, not whether I think it's good. From what I've seen so far, it looks like as a horror game it does what it needs to do and it's probably a good game. Unfortunately, the moment I got past the suicide scene, I simply could not force myself to play this game anymore. Before I played it, I was already aware that it would take a dark turn somewhere, but didn't know what. I also got spoiled regarding Sayori's suicide so I mostly had an idea about what I was getting myself into. But then after the game started pretending to glitch, I just had to close the game. I reopened it and tried to keep playing but I was so anxious that I genuinely couldn't help but stop the game.

I dunno, maybe I'm just a weakling but I feel that even though I'm not a fan of horror games, I wouldn't have reacted this way in any game other than one filled with nothing but scarejumps. This is the reason I'm voting "not recommended" - I'm genuinely concerned about the sanity of someone who plays something like Doki Doki Literature Club. I'm sorta glad that this game is free, because after the first few hours of nothing happening, you could end up not being able to keep playing, and be uneligible for a refund. Honestly I'm probably not the most reliable reviewer but if you want to play this game, you should be ready for the extreme, and consider whether you'd be able to handle a game such as this one.

This game is quite amazing. By Inti Creates, the developers of the Mega Man Zero and ZX games (as well as 9 and 10), this is truly one great experience.

GAMEPLAY
It is very similar to the Mega Man Zero games in terms of mechanics, you can jump, shoot (in auto-fire), dash, wall-jump (you can't slide off walls nor wall-dash though), and something completely new, unleashing electricity (I don't know how it's called). Basically, it creates an electric field around you which hurts enemies around you, and if you shoot an enemy, which creates a lock-on, activating the field will hurt the enemy(ies) massively. There's an energy meter however so that you can't overuse it. It's an incredibely interesting concept, and I love it. It does create a bit of confusion in terms of how it works though, and it does variate the difficulty of the game a bit too much (sometimes it makes it too easy, sometimes too hard).

GRAPHICS
The 2D pixel art they used is amazing and is, once again, very similar to the Mega Man Zero/ZX games. The full-drawn art in cutscenes and dialogue is also incredible. Overall, it's great, no complaints.

AUDIO
Let's make this clear. The soundtrack is AMAZING. Ippo Yamada, the composer of many Mega Man games, including the future Mighty No. 9, returns to the stage and makes an impressive soundtrack. However, the instruments used in this are a bit irritating in certain situations, but considering how great the music itself is, I think it compensates. I think a re-mastered soundtrack for release would be a good idea, as long as it isn't overly changed. As for the sound effects, they're pretty basic. The voice acting in the English w/ Japanese Voice and Japanese voice settings is very good as well, but I can't judge too much because I don't know Japanese.

STORY
I'll have to give bonus points for the creators in this category. While the story itself is kinda the same as in MM games (bad guy does bad things), the way it is presented is remarkable. It's told in a mature manner, involving actual world problems and such in conversations and stuff. It's great.

LEVEL DESIGN
Not perfect, but still very good. The stages are fair, don't have many cheap deaths, and are overall very fun to play through. Only complaint is that they are a bit short, but that I'll address a little bit later.

DIFFICULTY AND LENGTH
This game is quite difficult, however very forgivable as it has no life system and you have a lot of health before you die. I like that very much. The length though is a bit disapointing. It's too short honestly. I was able to finish it my first time in 6 hours, which isn't that great. I find it kind of annoying that there are only 6 main bosses to choose from instead of 8 like in Mega Man games, which would have made the game longer. I also believe that the stages themselves are a bit short, the first try it takes only up to 10-15 minutes, but after that I can beat them in barely any time at all.

ONE FINAL COMPLAINT...
Now, even though I absolutely love this game, there is one thing, ONE thing that hurts it A LOT. The PC port. To put it simply, it's a mess. The screen is still split (as this was originally released for the 3DS), so it means that a lot of the area is wasted, it just doesn't look good. Thankfully, at least when you're in-stage, only one screen is shown and the HUD is properly placed. Worst of all, not only is there a launcher with this game (which is automatically a red flag), it's a pain to set up, I spent like 30 minutes setting up the thing to work perfectly. There are two sets for the English language, one with voice, one with not. But it doesn't matter because you can still turn the voices off in the voiced one, and it also has in-game conversations, but that again can be turned off so I'm not sure what the deal is. Just keep one set of languages, not two. It also means that you can't play in other languages with voice acting. Another annoyance is that the controller buttons have to be mapped in the launcher, but even then you can still switch controls inside the game, UGH, this is annoying. I heard that they fixed most of the issues since the release, and considering it was released only a few months ago, I'm expecting improvement over the PC port.

VERIDICT
This game is AMAZING. I LOVED IT. The PC port however hurts it quite a lot, and if you can, I highly suggest you buy the 3DS version instead. Haven't played it, but I can bet that it is certainly better than this. So, yeah, amazing game! Good job Inti Creates! Totally recommend you play this as soon as possible.

Well, I have a lot of good things to say about this one. For starters, I didn't play any other Shantae games other than this. But judging by the trailers for the other games, I can easily assume this is the best. This game came out last year on 3DS and Wii U, and just a few months ago was ported to the PC. Here's my review.

The game plays like your average platformer. You control Shantae, who uses her hair to whip enemies, although later she gets upgrades like a gun, etc. The controls feel very smooth and responsive. You travel through six locations where you have to accomplish certain things and then go to the dungeon of the world. This heavily reminds me of Zelda, especially considering there are chests, keys, items, puzzles, etc. There are also a lot of secret items throughout the game. You can get jellies, which you can turn into health, and there are also bats I think that give you dark magic (you'll find out the use as you play). Also, you can use money earned from defeating enemies to buy one-time items (spike balls, shields, potions, etc.) or permanent upgrades (faster whip, more powerful, etc.). One thing I don't like is that some items are hidden in places that you either don't see (so either you have to get to them by complete accident or by trial and error), or that look like you can get them but you really can't. For example, there is a section in the sand that has tiny platforms that break upon touching them. I got very frustrated trying to get it, only to give up and learning that you can get it, but only after getting an upgrade. If it was more obvious that I couldn't get it, then I wouldn't have to be frustrated.

Presentation-wise, this game has great graphics. They are in a 16-bit SNES style, although on top of that, there are full artworks of the characters in-dialogs. For some reason, WayForward decided to use a default font for the dialogs, which looks quite ugly and annoying if you ask me. The soundtrack? Don't even ask. It's f*cking amazing. The composer also made the soundtrack for Shovel Knight, Duck Tales Remastered, Contra 4, etc. There isn't full voice acting, only occasional words by certain characters are pronounced, ususally sound good, but can get annoying at times.

Well, this game isn't super long either. You can beat it in three hours easily. Do I recommend it? Definitely. It is a little expensive compared to other indies (20$), but I still think it's worth it. Buy it, you'll like it!

Psychonauts is a 3D action-platformer game originally released on Xbox and Windows in 2005. This game is probably one of the most creative and artful games ever made. In this game, you are a character named Razputin and you need to travel through people's brains in order to solve their problems and whatnot. Each brain (world) is completely different and can be pretty weird. A world takes 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete most of the time, more if you're wasting your time somewhere or trying to solve a puzzle (yes, there are a few puzzles, but they aren't very difficult and give you hints all the time). The game itself isn't super long, you can finish it within 20 hours, probably around 5 if you're replaying the game (it took me 17 hours). You also get upgrades in your journey which let you use special powers (levitation, shooting fire, etc.)

This game is gold. It has great writing and some bizarre humour, excellent voice acting, beautiful environments, good character design, and an awesome soundtrack. On the negative side, the camera can get annoying sometimes and the story continuity kinda drops near the end of the game. Other than that, it's a game that you should definitely try (you can also get in on Xbox Live or the new Mac version) and that is worth every penny. I honestly wish this game got a sequel though. Awesome game, totally recommend to absolutely anyone.

This is the type of game that you play once for 5 minutes and never touch it again. However, added to that is the fact that the "fun" in this game is the fact that everything is poorly made and physics are atrocious. It's only funny for five minutes until, unless you're mentally underdeveloped, you realize that there are better things to do than play this crap. Don't waste ten bucks on this sh!t, buy a good indie game instead. I can't believe people love those immature simulators so much. Regardless, I'm never ever buying a simulator again.

If you are a game developer reading this, don't lazily make a game like this purely to attract idiots and get your paycheck fast.

It's a fun platformer games that I recommend to anyone. It's a little short, but it's still fun to play. You also have custom user-made levels if you finished the game but you want to play more.

I originally bought the first game for 5$, and quite frankly, it was okay. Nothing bad, but nothing spectacular either. Rebirth was on sale and I heard good things from the game so I decided to buy it and I was amazed by how much better this is. Fast-paced action, much more replay ability, and I can finally play in full screen.

About the game itself, it's a RNG-based game with an overlay Zelda-like dungeon view. By that, I mean that the whole game is randomly generated every time you start a new one. One game usually lasts about 30 to 1 hour, but if you die, you are brought back to the menu. You can also unlock different characters by accomplishing certain challenges, unlock new items that can appear in the dungeon, and you can even unlock challenges, which let you play the game in a different way (having a laser only, being heavy but defensive, etc.).

Overall, this game is great and much more enjoyable than the first one. It also finally has official controller support, not a big deal for me, but may be useful for other players. You can jump right into this one, the story is also the same as in the previous game, so there's nothing important in the first game that you need in order to enjoy this one.

Should you buy it? Yes, definitely. However, I'll warn you that if you dislike randomly-generated games, you may enjoy it less. If you're still skeptical, wait till a sale or something and buy it then. You probably won't regret it.

It's a fun free-control rythm game, which I really like. It is a little hard sometimes. I can't wait for the final release!

The story is about a person that... EXPLOSIONS EVERYWHERE!!!!

Anyway, the story is about a guy that must save the day by stopping explosions from happening. Yeah, but explosions will always happen. 8-Bit graphics and music are nice, although the music is sometimes irritating. I personally can't say whether you will like it or not, it's pretty immature, although it's funny for me. Someone else may not like it.

If you're the crazy type like me, you'll enjoy it. Otherwise, I don't recommend it.

Early Access Review
I just wanted to say that this game is great. A wonderful 2D 8-Bit platformer that I absolutely recommend to anyone (although I would recommend waiting for the final release). As an early access title, I feel that there are a lot of problems that, if fixed, will make the game a tad more enjoyable.

GREAT STUFF ABOUT THE GAME
  • 8-Bit Graphics are beautiful and done very well
  • Music is excellent, nothing to complain about here
  • World map is perfect, I like the concept
  • It's fun
PROBLEMS WITH THE GAME
  • My main issue is the controls. Being unable to assign buttons yourself and being a controler-less keyboard player, it's a real pain having to use the Alt key and Space key together (I'm on a Mac). I would like to be able to asign buttons myself.
  • The main character is pretty stiff to control. What annoys me the most is the "Y" button which is supposed to make the character fly, but the acceleration is slow and constantly jumping is faster. Same with the ground-pound, which has an acceleration too slow and letting the character drop down is as fast. Also, more precision is a little better.
  • The mouse should NOT be used at all in the game. It's a platformer, using a mouse is hellish in these cases.
  • The boss's life bar is often stuck behind him, making it sometimes invisible. The first boss fight (that's as much as I reached) takes a ton of time to beat.
  • The title screen confuses me. I prefer having a menu rather than controlling the character itself. Also, it is very confusing to understand what's going on. Finally, the character can go out of bounds.
GLITCHES
  • Getting killed by an enemy and immediately restarting the level, the music will no longer play until you get killed again and you don't restart.
  • Reaching the High Scores will result in having trouble quitting, since you need to use your MOUSE to click the exit button and resume to the title screen.

Overall, great game, I can't wait to see how the finished product will look like.
