Don't be discouraged by a recen deluge of negative reviews. It's just a bunch of entitled (and stupid) ♥♥♥♥♥ "protesting" the game being supported/kept up to date nearly 4 years after it's initial release and having to pay for it. While totally ignoring the ammount of free content they've been given (a free patch comes out with every dlc) - they just want more free ♥♥♥♥. If you don't believe me, just check the amount of hours the negative reviewers sunk into the game. Most of them would be 100+ and if the game was utter crap then why are you wasting so many hours of your life.

The biggest drawback of Paradox releasing regular DLCs is that the price of entry for those late to party has gotten very steep and althgough the DLC sales are quite regular (most often through Paradox store and not steam) - they usually happen during new dlc releases, in my opinion, they should bundle up some of the old DLCs to ease the burden, but as it is not the case at the moment. I would suggest following the guide at https://voxludicus.com/2016/06/28/a-short-guide-to-what-europa-universalis-iv-dlc-to-buy/ for which dlcs to buy - just Add Mandate of Heaven to second batch as it introduces ages mechanic which affects gameplay a lot and is closely tied to Rights of Man, and Third Rome to situational, since it focuses on Russian region.

Now, with that out of the way, onto review itself. The game's default start date is set at 1444 November 11 - a day after battle of Varna and finishes 1821 January 2nd - just a few months before death of Napoleon Bonaparte (my guess as to why is because it was just neater end the game at the start of the year, as opposed to midway through it). There is a fair amount of historical bookmarks to start your game at, such as Discovery of New World, War of League of Cam, Thirty Years War (religous wars between Protestants and Catholics within HRE), American Independence War, Napoleonic Wars etc., but you can choose to start at any date between start date and the end date with as much geopolitical accuracy as Paradox could manage. But the moment you start a game it becomes what I call "historically flavored sandbox". There are no set goals in this game and player has to set his own goals for campaign - be it going for achievements, becoming a trade hegemon, colonial powerhouse, emperor of holy roman empire, owning majority of Europe through personal unions or straight up world conquest, hell you can even try becoming a colinial powerhouse as Chuckchi should you desire - the biggest limiting factors are your own imagination and skill.

Speaking of skill. The game has a tremendously steep learning curve and the tutorial doesn't do much to help you out, so expect to fail and fail hard for the first few games. It is nothing like Civilization or Total War series, so having played any of those games won't help you out much, if at all - Google, user guides and youtube let's players (such as Arumba, Florryworry, DDRJake, shenryyr2 just to name a few) are your friends when learning the game. The starting difficulty depends on a nation you choose to play as raging from easy (Ottomans, France, England, Castille) to extremely hard (pretty much any one province minor, Byzantium, Albania, American natives, Mzab, Granada). But, with enough skill, it is possible to run away with the game with any nation and just bully everyone (for me personally, the more diffuclt the start the more satisfying the bulluying of everyone else is once you establish yourself as global power).

The replay value of the game is immense, as even picking the same nation to start with will yield different results each and every game due to AI nations rising and falling and the choices you make. The historical winners of that time period, such as France, Ottoman Empire, Spain, England/GB, Russia, Austria etc., but even they are not guaranteed to rise to the to the top, especially with Lucky Nations turned off (to earn achievements lucky nations MUST be left at their historical/default setting). If you want even more variety, and have Conquest of Paradise DLC enabled you can generate Random New World instead Americas. Although that tends to mess up trade and landmass seems to end up being considerably smaller than the Americas.

Modding community is also very robust and you can find mods from cosmetic changes to additional soundtracks, to informative loading screens to complete overhaul of gameplay mechanics (MEIOU and Taxes, Veritas et Fortitudo) which eschew the DLCs altoghether (I may be wrong here, since I've never used those mods myself, but I'm almost certain that MEIOU doesn't use any dlc)

MY RATING 8.7/10

While the game is not perfect, it is a top quality addition to any strategy games fan and is definitely the game I got the most bang for my buck (even with all the dlc purchases)
