Okay. So. Played as neco arc. On a doom 2 server. With duke nukem, colonel sanders, and pepsi man... in what was supposed to be half life multiplayer.

Jesus Christ where do I start with this game? One of my favorite games of all time. I only bought this game a few months ago and played it for the first time ending just under a week ago at the time of this review. I came into it expecting to just be a normal open world fps with rpg elements. And while to extent it was, it was so much more. Almost every decision I made in the game had a lasting effect on how I was viewed by other factions or by what I was bale to do with my given stats. If you couldnt brute force something through stats you could most likely do it by finding a key or some other object to work. You could make people like you more or make them scared of you just by using the right amount of speech points to sway the conversation. The way the main quest leads you to different areas on the map therefore introducing you to different cultures and giving you side quests to do is marvelous. On your way to the strip you'll get a slight understanding of the main factions motives and such, but you get into the main conflict once you arrive. Deal with benny and then you can choose which faction to side with. (or go on your own with yes man.) The majority of the quests you get from said factions are getting other smaller groups to either join you, or be eliminated depending on how you seem fit. I went through the NCR route this time, so this following statement may not hold true for other routes. But once you finally start the battle of hoover dam the legion is rushing into the dam and you and our allies must stop them. Once you pass through the dam you'll enter their base. Once you get there and clear out most of the other enemies you'll be met with what could be called the "final boss" of this route. Once you walk near him he will spark a conversation with you. If you have enough speech and/or barter you could talk him out of the fight, or kill him normally. That moment truly encapsulates how much your choices matter. If you had just focused more on speech you could have evaded a fight and given a different ending. The 45 hours I have are probably the best 45 hours I've experienced.

Blue shift is essentially just half life:lite. It reuses almost everything from base half life. adds no weapons or enemies. Despite coming out after opposing force it is severely a lesser experience. The only new things in this are the few new models and the "HD texture/model pack" which if im being honest i rarely ever prefer over the base models. This expansion is also very VEEEEERY short. It's fine but not the best.

Obviously since I have 26 hours so far I love this game no doubt. Its way of storytelling through immersion and barely having any cutscenes is a big plus for me. The only times I can think of having no control of Gordon was for a few seconds when you get ambushed and thrown into the trash compact. The gameplay is not TOO special but is still enjoyable and lives up to today in my opinion. Despite my praise there were some sour spots. Mainly on a rail. The slow beginning was definitely a turn off first time, but its fine because of how smoothly and shockingly the resonance cascade happens. You truly get to see how different black mesa gets after the disaster instead of just being thrown into an unknown place thats all destroyed. Xen was a bit slow to but not as atrocious as on a rail. The nihilanth was a fairly easy fight and was over in 2 to 3 tries for me. The ending was amazing also.

The different perspective of the black mesa incident was a very fun and interesting place to go with this game. Due to this entry being far shorter I will most likely get the most replay value from it. I enjoyed the first game better story wise, but from a gameplay perspective this one takes the cake. The extra weapons and more combat really increased the tension of the game. The inclusion of the race x species was welcome all be it confusing. I love when you would walk into a room and see race x, black ops, or the xen creatures all fighting or some variant of those 3. Over all I liked it better than the og half life.

I bought this game as a joke for 2 dollars during a sale, but oh my god this game was great. I came into it expecting it to be just another doom clone but with pop culture references. And although it being that, it was more. It was a bit more advanced then the original two dooms with you being able to have proper aiming and being able to jump and crouch. The enemies are much more varied than typical older "doom clones" with almost each enemy being almost entirely different. There's the pig cops with shotguns and the flying trooper things, which are the first 2 you meet. After that they get progressively more and more advanced. Flying cacodemon like creatures which shoot plasma/fire like balls. Another big thing I like about the enemies is the fact that the big bosses at the end of each chapter being smaller normal mini-boss like enemies in the following chapters. Speaking of the chapters I really like how each chapter has a different theme and truly feels seperate from each other. At the end of each chapter you are expected to have almost every weapon to fight the final boss. Which moves us on to weapons. Each one has its own purpose and place. pistol, shotgun, chaingun, and melee (which is dukes first) which are the standard weapons for fps games. Then we got the bigger guns rockets, devastator, pipe bomb, shrinker/expander, and later in the new chapter incinerator which is a secondary form of the freezer. Now onto the new chapter of the 20th anniversary edition. It focuses on Duke going to different areas around the world and doing what he does best kick alien ass. The final location being the hollywood sign which seems very fitting for Duke. Once you get to the top your greeted with the final boss. Duke claims, "I'm gonna roast your nuts over an open fire you flaming alien B****." and then the battle begins. It's a fairly lame fight but still cool. The boss only shoots out fire and is fairly easy to avoid. Just let out an entire thing of devastator ammo and a few rockets and he's gone. As you can tell by extensive review, 24 hours or so of playtime, and having every achievment I love this game.
