Ang salitang "karat" o "kantot" ay may malalim at prangka na kahulugan sa wikang Tagalog na tumutukoy sa aktong pisikal na pagsisiping ng dalawang tao, na kalimitang may layunin ng reproduksyon o pagpapahayag ng pagmamahal, ngunit maaari rin itong mangyari dahil sa iba’t ibang damdamin o layunin.

Sa mga sinaunang wika at paniniwala, ang ganitong kilos ay itinuturing na banal o sagradong bahagi ng buhay, sapagkat ito’y simbolo ng paglikha at buhay. Gayunpaman, sa modernong panahon, ang ganitong salita ay nagiging kolokyal at minsan ay ginagamit sa mapaglarong usapan o kabastusan, kaya’t nagiging mahalaga ang tamang konteksto ng paggamit nito.
