Very buggy, not a fun time

Disclaimer: This was played on an Oculus Rift CV1 with full 360 degree tracking with a VR supported PC. This review is made in early access! Therefore there will be updates to the game and I will update the review with my experiences as these updates come out.


02/08/23 Update: The game is now bug-free but is severely lacking in content after ~5 hours, again I would only recommend if you want to deal with early-access pains.

22/07/23 Update: As of LESS THAN 24 HOURS of this review going up, there has been 2 entire patches which has fixed the bug i mentioned. This is super impressive and at this rate the game is on course to become much better. I would recommend buying now but ONLY if you are willing to accept the growing pains of an early-access game.


Old review (21/07/23)
Honestly it's kinda bad. I kept having this bug where my hand would go slowly, stealth is hard as the enemies and cameras see you easily (seriously, who has ONE camera in their garage and nowhere else). The movement speed is too fast even while crouched and not sprinting.

Overall I wouldn't recommend the game in it's state right now as it's buggy, annoying and unclear on what anything does. Future patches could solve this but at the moment wait for them to come before buying.

I was laughing maniaclly for over 30 minutes, loved it 10/10

This game is one big ehhhhh, i wish there was a neutral option but there isn't so i'm going negative for now.

If you're expecting a bigger, deeper BONEWORKS campaign to get into some bone lore then this isn't the game for you, it was built to be what people thought BONEWORKS was, a sandbox.

The physics feel worse in some areas, the gunplay feels worse overall, with whatever hand you grabbed the gun with (mostly on pistols) fully controlling the rotation, the characters get annoying and in your face if you want to look down and they got in my way alot when i was trying to shoot or pull out my guns, climbing is somehow WORSE than BONEWORKS and there are alot of things that just feel super off compared to the previous game, it definitely needs alot of polish.

The story is short, took me 5.5 hours and i got stuck for ages on some parts, the avatar swapper feels like a gimmick and i didn't really use it, some of the sandboxes and arenas are kinda empty with nothing to do too, the puzzles are annoying and frustrating and alot of the time i just climbed stuff to bypass them as it got super boring fast, about 1/3rd of the game is literally a tutorial on how to use each character before letting you loose for TWO WHOLE MORE LEVELS where you have to use them, disappointing.

This game was overhyped to an extreme, the story is ok, the levels are short and there isn't much to do, it gets a 7.3 out of 10 vs BONEWORKS' 8.6, just go buy that if you're looking for a better overall game to play.

Update (April 2023): BONELAB isn't any better than i thought it was on release, in fact i hate this game even more now, BONEWORKS feels like a wayyyyy better game in comparison (apart from performance on my sub-par system). Don't buy this game, buy BONEWORKS instead.

Update: (July 2023): It's a whole game changer if you play the game with code mods like Fusion (MP Mod) and ModIO Networker (Auto installs mods). I would only recommend buying if you have friends to play it with.

Broke mod support so I literally cant run the game anymore
