Wow. One hour was all it took to be totally convinced of this early access title. It is completely playable as a game as it is, but frankly, this is a lot more than most VR games even try to offer. I'm unsure if I've actually bought an early access game that wasn't a 'eh' or 'i guess' or 'why is it even early access it's just a complete game?'

edit: I feel sometimes seeing that I still only have 1 hour might decrease the impact this review might have but I want to reiterate: I fully still believe in everything in it. Finals from summer semester and getting a job with the 2020 census has decreased my game time by a great deal, so I've not really been able to play much VR at all, regrettably. I always criticize reviews with 1 hour that say it's amazing and then they never played it again, so I felt I needed to justify myself in doing that same thing. I hope I can find time in the future. Read on.

In summary: it is BETTER than described. The pictures and videos do it justice, but not in action. You know that scene in Ender's Game? The film. It exaggerated the somberness of how Ender was whispering commands by the end, probably with all of his wingmen in command pods, not standing on a bridge, watching everything. But that's exactly what this is. When I imagined the book in my head, this is that. It's rough around the edges; it doesn't control perfectly; I still think the Index's grips are annoyingly sensitive. But ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, this is what science fiction dreamed about, really. Even if it was merely a proof of concept, it's incredible. That the whole groundwork of controls and mechanics- which need to be refined slightly for ease of use (three dimensional movement is hard when you're pointing at a 2.5 dimensional map sometimes) already exists and is completely playable- is just so much more than I came in with, and I came in just being a scifi fan and hearing "space rts in vr".

Any complaints lie in scope of the options available in ship choice/customization/etc and possibly how spongey the ships are relative to my desire for harder scifi ship combat, which is subjective anyway. If I would change one thing in the game, it would probably be to reduce all hull values by 80% while increasing shields 25% or so and making them more pivotal to bolster. Ships that take a direct hit in space are goners; one good mine ignites something important and you're the HMS Audacious; the bigger the construction, the more you have to play distance and salvo, since it's just too vulnerable, and in space, mass doesn't dictate your movement speed since gravity isn't compelling any momentum, only how quickly you can change rapidity, as momentum is unchanging unless you add further counter-velocity. Space combat shouldn't be a sort of grueling slog through hull points- there was a particular strategy game that I've completely forgotten the name of and can't find, (it was TOO hard, since it was basically oneshots), but it was Frozen Synapse but in three dimensions. It is very hard for humans to think in three dimensional combat, moreso when it's also in space, where running out of fuel while moving = you keep moving until you hit a rock (or a rock hits you?) or you fail to move fast enough to escape a gravity well while getting close enough to it; which is probably just as bad. Realism is obviously not the focus and that's okay. I think Homeworld would be a good thing to look at for how to expand into map design; really accentuate the fact that we're not bound by a flat strategic area, it makes a huge difference in what you're worrying about. Only 4 shield 'points' means it's still thinking in two dimensions as well; this is also pedantic and it's better than having one single shield value. Being able to specify hard points to send power to would also be more attention to detail, but the options now are still more than expected at all.

The game needs a much catchier name also, but I'm at a loss. BattleGroupVR doesn't really do the potential and shown potential in this justice whatsoever. The flavor is very generic but well performed, and the TTS works well enough and immersion is no problem; I was extra immersed until it was just Romans in Space, but latin names are easy to sound space-y thanks to 40k, I guess. Familiar enough to not be ridiculous but distant enough to not be sending out a captain named John Helmsman. Maybe if the writing is taken particularly to an interesting place, a name will become obvious for the release. I hope we're not stuck with that.

It seems like it took a whole hour to even think about what this game has, and will have, to offer, and it's well worth the $25, and not at all a stretch even at this stage. I feel like I got my money's worth and I played for a whole hour. I simply hope performance never becomes an issue, if too many ships are present, considering the nature of the always-rendered everything. My room is noticeably warmer and my GPU was churning through entropy like nothing else. I needed to get food but I will spend more time in the very nicely presented story mode, which was also more than expected; the tutorial is almost deceptive.

Make torpedoes more ballistic and less homing. Make movement matter. Make relative movement matter even more. A ballistic weapon in space is only as accurate at those ranges as its target is predictable, rather than the firing ship being 'accurate', the enemy ship has to be unable to dodge, random sprays of fire don't make any sense when you have lancing lasers n stuff.

No matter how much I can complain about the potential hard scifi of space combat it doesn't make this presentation any less amazing. THIS is what I wanted in VR. I hardly care if it stays in this state. That it's the release of early access means there's a lot in store. I'll join the discord eventually, as this is clearly a work of passion and time. This is the sort of game you want to sell VR to an RTS player, or sci-fi reader.

I look forward to updates and more. The enemy's gate is down.

Yikes. Played it just a couple days ago. Can you imagine that Cyber Hunter can do crossplay on mobile and pc better than an actually talented developer? I finally got to play this game properly without awful 4 camera tracking and now it's just a joke.

And the Quest has better specs in general than your typical snapdragon. I'ma just play Cyber Hunter I guess.

Gave it a shot. the scopes are really the only improvement. Everything else was downgraded or made somehow feel more 'floaty'. Every. Thing.
Every. Single. Thing. It just doesn't even control well anymore. And it sorta barely did before sometimes.

NVG lowering your fov to baby levels is absurd and I laughed so hard when I tried it.

update: excellent campaign. nightly squats routine returns

Have a lot more hours on Oculus, pretty fantastic game and rebought it for LIV but haven't gotten around to it.
Main issue is that custom levels will be no where to be seen. Given there are only a dozen or so, this is a problem.
It's hard to master the songs on deadeye (check modifiers! the game is not as easy as it seems! this should be the default mode probably!) and I tend to overreact to getting overstimulated in being targeted and it's even a nice workout.

Do note that rhythm > accuracy, so do not expect a perfect gallery shooter. You still need to be on rhythm or it seems to disfavor your shots.

the ONLY reason I give this a positive instead of a negative is because the songs are actually ♥♥♥♥♥♥ good unlike some games that have a only a small selection. HVDES is fantastic. I hope subsurface makes it on there.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ this game is alive again?

It was pulled from steam briefly because of copyright issues with one of the songs. It didn't exist anywhere. It was kind of weird seeing a game just poof from existence, but looks like they solved it.

Still a fantastic game with an asymmetric narrative that is unique in a certain way, plays like a rather clunky Luigi's Mansion, but in such a way that a random writer is probably out of shape, so I can dig it. Could you imagine Stephen King running more than three meters? I can't imagine he'd make it out of his chair.

Like their other game, a waste of money. I played on a quest with link. Controls hardly work. Nothing is intuitive. Buy Gun Cluhb or H3VR or anything else. Like, seriously. Please don't buy shovelware. Please stop releasing shovelware. Hope I get my money back. It wasn't even worth the sale price.

Bought on sale. Also bought their other game, which was a mess. You see the stuff in the trailer? That happens sometimes. See the reloading? There's no reason to move your hand like that, it just reloads like a pump shotgun. You get 11 rounds and there are no other apparent weapons, but some upgrades, and two missiles which I never found ammo for anyway. All the enemies are the same except some have a shield and some have an axe. There seem to be some hazards as well, but they are trivial. The armswinging is done poorly and there is no option to change the direction of movement (I would rather move where I'm looking that in a controller direction, since I can't shoot backwards).

This game is a scam at this price. At $2 it was a scam too. At least I can be the one review for it so no one will buy it. Please don't buy things from this developer until they stop releasing shovelware and actually try.

pretty much essential, has tons of features even for oculus users, reset floor/center etc all is fantastic. great companion app.

- september 2020: i stopped using my quest and bought an index and while it used to be useful for the quest it is probably buggy since facebook ruins everything. enjoy the '90hz but at an indeterminate date' Adventure 2
