Genuinely the best option for working with pixel art, no other application is as refined and focused on it and you're only lying to yourself like I did saying you don't NEED this to work on pixel art, you do, get it, now.

The only downside is realising that you might be disappointed by other similarly specialized software in future.

The 1.0 release does not currently feel like it should be considered that, there's a handful of mostly small quirks and quality of life issues that feel like they should have been addressed already, but with that said it's very much a fun and decently lengthy experience if you get some friends together to play with. Though if you only want to play solo you're not going to have the best time.

I'd heavily recommend looking into mods to better tailor the game to your needs as the options for the world/progression are really lacking.

There's a good chance this is still being developed, but they've made a couple months progress in the years since I bought it. The development is going so slowly it's unlikely they'd reach 1.0 before the end of this century.

Game is dead, still has very basic bugs that it's had throughout development, there's a lot to like in concept, but the execution needed a lot more work before considering this a released game. It's not a 1.0, it's an alpha in disguise.

Controls like an early 00s game, just feels cheap, for all there is to do it's overpriced as it is and they're increasing that price.

Couldn't uninstall it fast enough. It tries to be a dozen different games and fails horrendously at every single aspect.

As a singleplayer game, perfectly fine, solo runs have had no issues and the content is reasonably good. As the intended multiplayer experience however, absolutely disgraceful, whenever I've been in a group doing quests, y'know, what you would EXPECT to play like, the quests have almost ALWAYS broken, even being a few seconds ahead can break a quest just by locking one player out of it because for some reason some steps count for the player completing it and some count for both. Basically the intended way to play the game is broken to an unbelievable degree and is completely unplayable that way.

Hard not to recommend this. The older demo version was a blast and it's only gotten better, with the plans on the roadmap it looks like that will continue too. If that hadn't sold it for me already then the high moddability of the game definitely would have.

Such a massive content expansion for the game with huge potential fun. Not-Quite-Aliens and a human run Skynet to run your colony while you mass produce genetically enhanced child soldiers? What other game possibly allows such an INSANE premise for a run?!

In all seriousness though the additions are really well made and highly extendable. Xenotypes are very easy to quickly get a suitable result, and highly moddable. Commanding mechanoids can end up with a whole colony run by a single pawn controlling many adorable machine servants, although you're likely to pollute a large chunk of the planet in the process. Raising kids makes me cringe a bit (I don't like the crotch goblins irl never mind in games usually) but these ones are adorable once you start breeding xenohuman soldiers that can spit fire.

While I've already had a lot of fun messing with the DLC, I'm going to have even more fun modding it.

I've come back to try this after every major update to see if any of the fundamental issues have been resolved and every single time it's come up short. The direction always seems like it's heading the right way then you run into a ridiculous length real time progress blocker, examples like the freighter missions, the living ship growth period, the newest settlements even having buildings taking multiple real hours.

These are a huge negative effect forcing you to basically stop in your tracks and come back later, artificially extending how long things take is a terrible design decision. Alongside the dozen or so resource sinks it just amounts to a very boring and repetitive cycle. There's no REAL reason to explore, there's nothing that you need to seek out on specific biome planets outside of the items you can sell to make some quick cash, there's no story to the environments because they're all basically the same. The translation stuff is interesting on the surface but it's as deep as a puddle.

There's just nothing to really do, everything you can build up is just another resource sink with no real benefit to do so aside from finding more ways to spend resources and a handful of faster ways to gather them. A gold plated ♥♥♥♥ is still just ♥♥♥♥. The one good thing I can say is that they've kept trying to improve, they've stuck with this game to try and make it good and I'm sure plenty of people enjoy all the updates, I just don't feel they've improved the basic gameplay loop enough to recommend it.
