It's a shooter, it's an Action RPG, it's a ridiculous romp into the absurd and I loved every minute of it.

After 85 hours, a broken computer desk and a sore hand from all the pounding on said computer desk I finished Saints Row 4.

The experience was both awful and cool. That's how this game goes being maddeningly frustrating then suddenly becoming a hilarious romp.

Once I figured out the "super powers" thing I found it a lot more enjoyable to dispatch the hordes of alien baddies but when forced to veer back to "Nintendo land" for a few side missions it became a grind.

Still, I wouldn't have spent 85 seconds in Saints Row 4 if I wasn't enjoying the experience. The hard parts were always rewarded and that's the mark of a good game.

---2019 Update ---

Yes, 4 years later and I still play this on occasion but not as much as I used to. It's still the best free RPG out there and it hasn't strayed into Pay to Win as the only items for sale are cosmetic or aids like expanded stash tabs.

Why I don't play much anymore? It's very grindy and very much dependent on a marketplace outside of the game to get decent equipment. I don't like that. I don't mind working for a good piece of equipment but that doesn't happen here. The loot drops have gotten better but still pale in comparison to what you can get in the marketplace. A marketplace whose currency is a variety of orbs of varying value used for different crafting tasks. You can't buy any of these orbs either, you have to grind for them.

Here's the real problem with the whole economy as I see it. The orbs you collect (or trade for) are used in crafting with different orbs affecting different attributes. It's one thing if an upgrade or attribute costs X number of orbs but this game makes it a literal dice roll. You can literally ruin an item with a bad roll and spend 100's of orbs to fix it. In short it's gambling. If GGG sold orb packs like they do cosmetic options the EU would try to ban it just like Belgium did to EA loot boxes and they'd be right to.

The economy is way too important in Path of Exile causing many players to focus on it and craft "super items" that people buy to dominate in the game. The devs respond by making the game harder forcing you into the marketplace in an endless escalating loop.

BAD idea...

Don't get me wrong, it's still fun but for me the focus on the game economy breaks the experience. BTW don't express a similar opinion, the community is very protective of the way things are to the point of toxicity. Yet another reason I backed away.

Now on to the original review which I still feel is 90% accurate...

----2015 review-----

I'm a casual RPG gamer meaning that I don't have the special keyboard, no little Diablo 3 or WoW figurines on my monitor and I don't fantasize about my female characters. That said, I've played a quite a few RPG's including 2 Dungeon Siege(s), Titan Quest, Skyrim, Oblivion, Dragon Age and some others I forgot. When I play an RPG I tend to get addicted to it. Long hours and sometimes long grinds to level up.

The only other free to play game that I've had this much fun with was Star Trek Online. The graphics are on par with the best RPG's currently out there and for the price (free) better than many it competes with. I have videos of some of my gameplay sessions in my profile area. They're stream captures meaning quality is a bit lower but even at 720P with a 2K bit rate you can tell it's a good looking game.

It's a very personal gaming experience but still very much an online one much like WoW. Every time you go back to town, for example, there's always a number of other players milling about. I haven't found any offline option to play it BTW meaning your Internet connection better be up to snuff . But no worries about saved games or losing progress, it's all saved in the cloud.

As for playing the game....

The inventory system is very similar to Torchlight 2, Titan Quest or Dungeon Siege but the currency system is very different. There is no "gold" save for a few rings here and there. There are only "items" meaning you're going to be bartering for everything you didn't find on your quest.

That's ok though as there's plenty of lively trade opportunities. If there's anything that's a disappointment it's the relatively weak loot drops. You're going to have to grind through a lot of baddies before you get anything of real value but there are those hidden "gems" if you pardon the pun. That and you could always take part in the micro transactions in game to get yourself a few goodies without grinding for it if you so choose.

Let me be clear, you don't really need to buy anything ( with real money ) to enjoy the game. So far I see no evidence of it being a "Pay to Win" game like so many seem to be these days. There's thoughtful little touches throughout the game that show the developer really cares about the player. Things like not having to buy health and mana potions. Instead you get bottles and they fill up as you hack through enemies. Now what's more fair than that? Better yet some of the bottles you'll find actually grant you buffs and the best part is you find them, not buy them.

Speaking of goodies. I love the fact that you can equip an inventory item with the appropriate "gem" and then remove it for use somewhere else if you so choose. That's something you couldn't do in Torchlight and it drove me nuts to lose a good gem in what later became an inferior piece of equipment.
Another nice feature is that the gems are basically spells or buffs that operate independent of whatever they happened to be placed in. So you don't lose the core benefits of a gem because you may have put it in a helmet instead of a sturdy pair of boots for example.
Another nice aspect of the game is the battle mechanic. The game includes what I call "area of effect" weapons that allow you to attack multiple enemies. It was the lack of that in Titan Quest that annoyed me to no end in that game.
As with any RPG, at lower levels you're going to die...A LOT. Thankfully you usually spawn nearby and the damage inflicted on your enemies stays constant meaning you may have to grind a boss battle but at least they're not regenerating health making it an endless proposition.

That's another thing I really don't like in some RPG's. If you've got a tough boss don't make me do a puzzle and die 45 times to figure it out. Just give them a million hit points and let me wear them down. At least I'll feel like I'm accomplishing something instead of doing the same thing over and over again with seemingly no progress.

--2019 update -- In later years I found higher levels have bosses that regenerate health with high hit points so there's more grinding. That and after mid-game you start dealing with XP penalties for every death which I don't care for. Endgame has a nasty surprise in the way of stat penalties after WINNING a boss battle! So there's that ---2019 update end---

If I want puzzle games I'll go play Portal!

So far I've enjoyed this game immensely. Yes, it can be a maddening grind at times but no more than any other RPG and I'm enjoying it much more than games that I've actually paid full price for.

If there's any downside it's only minor quibbles. Finding your friends for a co-op session, for example, isn't as easy as it should be ( you have to find their game " instance" by right clicking the outside of a town entrance) and default key assignments can have you popping open a social window or an overlay map at the wrong time. So check them before you start playing!

As I said earlier the loot drops can be disappointing but that's common in RPG's and after all it is a Free game so you can't expect everything to be handed to you. Sometimes you get a nice surprise but you're going to work for it.

If you're a Twitch Streamer there's a TWITCH client built right into the game. No need for Xsplit or OBS but I use them anyway since I do my own BRB screens and tend to be fussy about how my stream looks.

I'm only 20 or so hours into the game but I think I'll stick with it. It's a good game and I say that because every time I play it I see 3 or 4 hours vanish. In heated battles I'm literally bouncing in my chair and lurching toward the monitor. If all that physical activity isn't the mark of a good game I don't know what is.

It's worth at least trying if you're an RPG gamer. When I get toward the end I'm pretty positive that I'll do a few micro transactions and maybe purchase something from the dev's store like I did when I finished Star Trek Online. Just to show some appreciation.

I'll keep it short, the game doesn't even load on my system. Not interested in Freemium games anyway. I prefer to play games not troubleshoot them.

It's a great passtime. Being from an indie developer there are some bugs but it does a decent job of approximating (not simulating) the average repair garage. The camera angles can get a little funky when you're tyring to move around the car but I chalk that up as an attempt at realism. Since parts on real cars are often only accessible from certain areas but can be seen from others I can give it a pass.

The reparis are somewhat general but if you have a basic grasp of auto mechanics you'll enjoy this game. Sometimes the programming fails, however, and forces you into a narrow order of operations that is less about reality and more about how the game is coded.

Don't expect to get your ASE certification from the game it's not that specific but the game will challenge you to figure out problems with little more than a customer complaint that says, " It won't start"

Be sure to enable the cursor clipping option or the game will randomly dump to the desktop on a scene change. Other than that it's just a great timesink for a gearhead. I got it on sale and feel it's worth what I paid but not the regular price.

I'd recommend the game to people interested in automotives that would like to get a basic understanding of what it means to do basic repairs and the thought process behind them.

Some say this is the best of the Diablo 2 clones with better graphics. The base game is eight years old now and having played newer titles like Torchlight 2, Dungeon Siege 2 and 3 as well as others, I think that's selling it a bit short. It's held up well although you won't find features now taken for granted like player customization, Steam achievements, automapping and multiplayer party features. The game is engaging and challenging but just enough to keep pulling you along. There are no 20 minute play sessions, more like a few hours or more.

The game looks great, the maps are interesting but sometimes it does seem a bit long between merchants and you can run out of health potions quickly. When that happens it can be a bit of a grind but at least you get XP for your trouble. The camera angles are failry limited but you can zoom in and out. There are times I wish I had more control of the camera but it doesn't really get in the way of playing the game. Unlike Dungeon Siege 3 whose camera controls were so bad they made the game unplayable with their wild random swings. Titan Quests stays locked on in comparison.

If I had one complaint in the single player it would be the combat system. You're forced to fight one enemy at a time even if you're going up against 30 baddies. You spend a lot of time selecting individual opponents and chugging health potions to get through it. At least I haven't been trapped by a such a group. There always seems to be an avenue to run away when needed and the baddies only chase you for a short time.

The ability to save on the fly is great but expect to have to hack through everything you already dispatched again when you come back. I kind of like things I kill to stay dead in the same game. Altough to it's credit if you don't leave the game session, dead things will stay dead. I just wish the saves would follow suit. It's another example of how the game can be a bit of a grind in some places.

You can customize weapons and armor with enchantments and the inventory system is very much like torchlight or any other RPG with inventory slots set up in a grid. The skills tree is easy enough to understand but the game is a bit stingy with skill points meaning your special abilities won't do you much good till you're done with the game. It can be annoying to get beaten by a lower level enemy who has a special ability that you're nowhere near achieving.

There is fast travel capability that you can use on the fly which is something I liked in Torchlight 2 and Dungeon Siege 2 where you can leave and then transport back to exactly where you were. That's a time saver and potentially a life saver when you run out of health potions or fill up you rinventory with loot.

If this game really falls down anywhere, however, it's the multiplayer/co-op gameplay. Yes it has LAN play which is welcome but unlike newer games in this genre XP and loot aren't shared. between players Which means if you're level 3 and you go into a game with a level 16 player all they can really do for you is play bodyguard which means there's not much in it for them. The loot drops don't level with the player either so often times you'll pick up items you won't be able to use or are useless scarp metal. Although that's a common complaint in RPG's and not just Titan Quest.

In the end even with its flaws I really liked this game and the benefits far outweigh the annoyances and goes in the list of my top 3 favorite RPG's so far.

This game's 7 years old and has all the weaknesses of its time. Yes it will crash, freeze and even reset your customizations so make sure to back up that user.ini file. That said it holds up well. The environments are incredible and immersive even more than half a decade later. Combat can be a bit overdone at times however and if there's one failing of the game it is that. You die way too much mostly because of slow weapon reload times and too many enemies coming at you at once. I'd recommend going through the game on easy the first time through or you'll spend months stuck in one spot. Ammo is expensive so get as much ADAM as you can to compensate. The Psychic abilities are cool but a bit underpowered. I always felt like I was outmatched no matter who the opponent was. Maybe that's by design but it teeters on the brink of being a grind at times. Map, journal and inventory could be laid out better as they're weak for an RPG. Hard to navigate when you're just trying to figure out what it is you're supposed to be doing.
This game's old enough to work on just about anything with a keyboard made since 2008. All in all I'd give in an 8 out 10

More a technology demo than a game it further whets the appetite for Half Life 3. Wandering around a beautrfully rendered environment with some limited FPS action you get the feeling this was a half hearted attempt to make a game out of a demo. Still even half hearted attempts in this universe can be fun.

Fascinating and ground breaking for its time. The game everyone wanted after al those Futuremark benchmarks made us wonder why such talent was wasted on a mere benchmark. The premise is simple, you're in space harvesting precious minerals from a destroyed moon. Competing factions battle for control of limited resources against a backdrop of beautifully rendered cosmic destruction. It's a bit more cerebral than a lot of shooters but worth the time if you're tired of dusty desert battlefields or medieval warfare.

Another Half Life 2 episode to keep the masses clamoring for more. Picking up immediately where episode 1 left off it's pretty much the same premise but this time setting the stage for HL3 (assuming it ever shows up) Again, you can't call yourself a Half Life 2 fan if you don't play this game, it's a right of passage so just do it!

Alyx and D0g and that's all you really need to know. A continuation of the original it takes the franchise forward in a way no DLC pack could ever accomplish. The graphics are slightly better than HL2 which is expected for a title released 2 years after it but none of the action or charm has been lost. There are puzzles to be solved throughout and any Portal player will recognize the tech. Sometimes challenging, sometimes maddening until a quick trip to YouTube gives you that a-ha! moment. You can't call yourself a Half Life fan unless you play this game.
