For some reason people are nagging me about Rage, probably as one of the few with recent playtime on it. Is it worth buying? Is it something that should occupy my backlog? Is it worth revisiting? Is it worth its sequel? Is it worth playing at all?

No, no, no, no and no.

Back in 2010, this might have been a technological marvel. A large semi-open world FPS with racing and RPG elements running on the brand spanking new id Tech 5 engine. Back in 2010 the mixture of crafting and trading in a gritty post-apocalyptic world wasn’t done to death.

In 2018, this is still a serviceable, competently built game that runs smoothly and is by no means downright bad, hence the recommendation. BUT, it still suffers from texture pop-ins that were there from launch, has systems in place that since have become obsolete, has a paper-thin plot that can and will be forgotten almost immediately and is above all just a bland, run-of-the-mill shooter that might entertain you for the 10 hours it takes to complete, but can be skipped and ignored without missing out on anything that hasn’t been done better in the past 6 years.

Why a sequel then? Beats me, probably the fact that there hasn’t been a Borderlands game for a few weeks opened up a gap for a slightly more up-beat version of Rage, sans the loot extravaganza (or so it seems).

Unless you really have a post-apocalyptic itch to scratch and you’ve already beaten Fallout 3 and 4, all Borderlands games, Mad Max, The Walking Dead and every cynical trash survival game released since 2010, don’t feel bad about passing on Rage. Read Wikipedia’s plot synopsis and you’re ready for Rage 2.
